Before replacing anything, establish which program is calling vobject.dll. The file is most strongly associated with older Sony Ericsson and Sony PC Companion software, not with Windows itself.
Check these points:
- Which program displays the error? Record the application name and the full message.
- When does it appear? Note whether it happens at Windows startup, when connecting an Xperia phone, during a software repair, or when launching a particular program.
- What changed first? Think about an incomplete uninstall, update, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, restored system image, or migration to a newer Windows installation.
- Where is the calling program installed? Look for the executable path in the error dialog or Task Manager.
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit? Public file records describe
vobject.dllas a 32-bit application DLL, but Sony has not published a current file manifest confirming that detail.
The safest repair is to restore the Sony application that originally installed the file. Do not begin by downloading a standalone DLL or copying one into a Windows folder.
What is vobject.dll?
vobject.dll is a Windows dynamic-link library with the reported internal description VObject DLL. Public file records associate it primarily with Sony PC Companion, Sony’s former Windows software for managing Xperia phones.
It is not identified as a Microsoft Windows component. There is no verified evidence that it belongs in either:
#1 Best Overall
- Wi-Fi compatible for direct download and streaming
- Made with a rigid aluminum frame and gold solder inside a precisely engineered chassis
- Up to 36 hours of 44.1KHz FLAC playback
- Supported by Android
- Connect to a PC to access your music collection
%SystemRoot%System32
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
The name may appear in several reported error forms:
- “This application failed to start because VObject.dll was not found.”
- “The file VObject.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: VObject.dll.”
- “Error loading VObject.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because VObject.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Cannot find VObject.dll.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “VObject.dll could not be registered.”
These are reported message variants, not proof that every error comes from the same current Windows program.
The metadata sometimes repeated online, including a specific version, file size, hash, or bitness, is inconsistent and is not independently verified by Sony. Treat the file as an application-specific component whose correct copy belongs beside the Sony program that needs it.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the calling Sony program
This is the most likely and safest fix.
Find the program named in the error
- Reproduce the error and write down the complete message.
- If the message names an executable, note its filename.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps and look for Sony, Xperia, PC Companion, or an old phone updater.
- Open Settings with
Windows+I. - Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for:
- Sony PC Companion
- Sony Ericsson software
- Xperia software
- Sony updater or phone-management utilities
- If you find the program, select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
If the error appears during startup but no Sony application window opens, also check Task Scheduler:

- Look for tasks referring to Sony, Xperia, PC Companion, or an updater.
- Do not delete a task immediately. Open its Actions tab and record the executable path.
- If the task points to a missing Sony installation, disable the task temporarily and restart.
Install the supported Sony replacement
Sony retired PC Companion and moved users to Xperia Companion. The supported recovery path is:
- Open Sony’s official support site in your browser.
- Search for Xperia Companion.
- Download the installer offered for your Windows version.
- Open the downloaded installer.
- Follow the installation instructions.
- Start Xperia Companion from the Start menu.
- If your phone is supported, use its software repair function when the phone software installation itself is damaged.
Xperia Companion does not recreate every old PC Companion feature, and support varies by phone model and Windows version. Installing it may therefore solve the missing component for a supported workflow without restoring the obsolete PC Companion program itself.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair is successful if:
- the original error no longer appears;
- the Sony application starts normally;
- Xperia Companion detects the phone;
- the software-repair process opens without a
vobject.dllmessage.
If the error still names an old PC Companion executable, the startup entry or scheduled task may be leftover software rather than a working installation. Remove the broken entry only after confirming that no current Sony software depends on it.
For a legacy phone that specifically requires PC Companion, use the original trusted Sony installer, vendor-supplied media, or a known-good backup. Sony no longer presents PC Companion as its normal current download, so a random copy from a file-sharing or DLL download sites page is not an equivalent replacement.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined the DLL after identifying it as suspicious, or it may have removed a damaged copy during cleanup.
- Open your antivirus application.
- Go to Protection history, Quarantine, Threat history, or the equivalent section.
- Search for
vobject.dll. - Check the detection name, original file path, date, and parent application.
- If the file was inside a legitimate Sony installation directory, confirm that the installer and executable came from a trusted Sony installation.
- Restore the file only when its origin is clear and your security product gives you a way to approve that specific item.
- Restart the Sony application.
Do not turn off antivirus protection merely to restore a DLL. If the quarantine record points to an unfamiliar folder, a temporary directory, a cracked application, or an unexpected copy in a Windows system directory, leave it quarantined and run a full security scan.
When restoration is not clearly safe, uninstall the damaged Sony application and reinstall it from Sony’s supported software path. A clean installation is safer than manually replacing a quarantined file.
Fix 3: Repair the application rather than copying the DLL
Some installations offer a built-in repair command.

- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Not every traditional desktop program provides these controls. If they are absent, use the program’s original installer, if available, and choose Repair or Change from its setup menu.
The application’s own installer is important because Windows normally searches the application directory for its private DLLs before searching other locations. Microsoft documents application-specific DLL placement as preferable to copying files into shared system directories.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that vobject.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load one of its dependent DLLs.
Use the full error and the application path to investigate:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the Sony program’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether
vobject.dllis present beside the calling executable. - Do not assume that its presence proves the installation is healthy.
- Check whether other files in the same installation folder are missing.
- Run the application’s repair option or reinstall the complete Sony package.
- If the error names another DLL or runtime, address that named dependency using its official installer.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET simply because vobject.dll is mentioned. The available evidence does not establish that any of those packages installs this particular file. Install a runtime only when the actual error identifies that runtime or the Sony application’s official requirements call for it.
Fix 5: Check architecture and avoid System32 confusion
Public repositories describe the commonly reported vobject.dll record as a 32-bit application DLL, but this has not been confirmed by Sony. The correct architecture is determined by the program that loads the file, not by whether Windows itself is 32-bit or 64-bit.
A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit applications. That does not mean a 32-bit DLL should be manually copied into SysWOW64, and it does not mean a 64-bit DLL belongs in System32. Those folder names are often misunderstood.
Do this instead:
- Find the executable that displays the error.
- Identify whether it is the original Sony application or a leftover updater.
- Use the installer matching that application.
- Keep the DLL in the application’s own installation directory.
- Remove duplicate manually copied versions from unrelated folders only after confirming they are not used by another legitimate program.
If a legacy 32-bit Sony program will not run on current Windows, try its official repair path first. Compatibility mode may help some old programs, but it does not guarantee that PC Companion will work or that an incompatible driver will function.
Fix 6: Check phone and USB drivers only when Device Manager shows a problem
A missing vobject.dll is not established as a device-driver error. However, a failed Xperia connection may expose two separate problems: the Sony application may be damaged, and Windows may have a missing or malfunctioning phone or USB driver.
Check Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Connect the phone if it is safe to do so.
- Expand Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and any category showing the phone.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message and note any error code.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver only when a suitable official driver source is available.
- If the device became broken immediately after an update, try Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows and reconnect the phone.
Do not replace a working driver merely because vobject.dll is missing. Repair the Sony application separately, then address the Device Manager error if one remains.
When hunting compatible phone and USB drivers across several hardware entries becomes repetitive, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the Sony application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.
Fix 7: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Sony DLL.

Use them when you also see Windows problems such as damaged built-in applications, repeated system-file errors, failed Windows components, or unexplained operating-system instability.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Then run DISM followed by SFC:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Sony application again.
Run the commands in that order. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If it reports that it could not repair some files, record the result and return to repairing or reinstalling the Sony application. SFC and DISM are not substitutes for a trusted third-party application installer.
If manually repeating repair commands and interpreting their logs is taking time without identifying a change, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing detected Windows issues; repairs are performed through the full version and are not required for this DLL. Reinstalling the Sony program remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Consider an obsolete PC Companion installation
PC Companion was superseded by Xperia Companion. That distinction matters when a modern Windows installation reports vobject.dll during startup or phone management.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the error comes from an old PC Companion executable:
- Back up any phone data that is still accessible.
- Record the exact executable path from the error or Task Manager.
- Uninstall PC Companion if it is still listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Xperia Companion from Sony’s current support path when your phone is supported.
- Test the required phone function.
- If the phone is not supported, use the phone manufacturer’s current recovery options or a properly isolated, backed-up legacy environment.
Do not assume that compatibility mode, a copied DLL, or a new Windows runtime will reproduce every PC Companion feature. If the old program is required for an unsupported device, the underlying problem may be software obsolescence rather than a missing file.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is mainly used for suitable COM or ActiveX libraries.
There is no verified evidence that vobject.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX server. Therefore, this command is not a general repair:
regsvr32 vobject.dll
Running it against an ordinary application library may produce another error without restoring the missing dependency. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL and provides the correct architecture-matched command.
Why standalone DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download vobject.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or every application folder. That approach can provide:
- malware or a tampered file;
- the wrong build;
- the wrong architecture;
- a DLL intended for different software;
- a file that still lacks its dependent DLLs;
- a security risk from placing an untrusted library in a searched directory.
Microsoft documents DLL search-order and DLL preloading risks. A malicious library in a directory searched before the legitimate one may be loaded by an application.
Use the original Sony installer, Sony’s current Xperia Companion package, trusted vendor media, or a known-good backup from the same application installation. No current official Microsoft or Sony page provides vobject.dll as a standalone redistributable.
If reinstalling Sony software does not help
Collect these details before taking further action:
- the exact error text;
- the executable path named by the error;
- your Windows version and system architecture;
- the Sony software name and version, if shown;
- whether
vobject.dllis present in that application’s folder; - the antivirus quarantine result;
- any Device Manager error code;
- whether the error occurs in a new Windows user account;
- whether it began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, or system-image restore.
If the error occurs only at startup, disable the confirmed leftover Sony startup item or scheduled task rather than replacing a DLL blindly. If it occurs only when connecting a phone, separate the application test from the USB-driver test.
A persistent failure after a clean reinstall may indicate that the old Sony software is incompatible with the current Windows version or that the device is no longer supported. In that situation, an isolated legacy environment with a backup may be safer than weakening Windows security or using an unknown DLL copy.
FAQ
Is vobject.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Microsoft Windows component. It is most strongly associated with old Sony PC Companion software.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which program installed vobject.dll?
The strongest public attribution is Sony PC Companion, formerly used to manage Xperia phones. The filename could theoretically be reused by another application, so confirm the calling executable before deleting or repairing anything.
Is vobject.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public file records describe it as 32-bit, but Sony has not independently confirmed that detail. Match the DLL to the application’s original installer rather than choosing a file based only on Windows architecture.
Can I copy vobject.dll from another computer?
Only if it is the exact original file from the same trusted Sony application build and location. A random copy may be malicious, incompatible, or missing the dependencies the program also requires.
Should I run regsvr32 vobject.dll?
Normally, no. There is no evidence that this file is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library. regsvr32 does not recreate a missing application installation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Will SFC fix vobject.dll?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Use it only when there are broader Windows corruption symptoms, and repair the Sony application separately.
Is Xperia Companion the same as PC Companion?
It is Sony’s successor, not a guarantee that every old PC Companion feature or phone model remains supported. Use it when Sony lists your device and required function as supported.
Why does the error say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible DLL. Repairing the complete parent application is safer than replacing only the file named in the message.
