Voidwrought is a 2D cosmic-horror Metroidvania whose strongest case is its hand-drawn visual identity, oppressive atmosphere, exploration, and music. Reviews suggest it delivers a recognizable genre adventure rather than a reinvention: players drawn to moody exploration and fast-paced combat are the best fit, while those seeking unusually original mechanics or consistently clear progression may find it less compelling.
What is Voidwrought?
Developed and published by Powersnake, Voidwrought launched on Steam on October 24, 2024. It is a 2D action-platformer set in a cosmic-horror world, built around exploration, combat, abilities, artifacts, and boss battles. The official description also includes a shrine-expansion layer, giving the player a home base to develop as the adventure progresses. Powersnake describes the game as a fast-paced action-platformer with tight traversal, varied abilities, and formidable boss battles; that wording is the developer’s pitch, not a neutral assessment.

What do Voidwrought reviews agree on?
Art direction and atmosphere are the clearest strengths
Across the review coverage summarized by Metacritic, the most consistent praise is for the game’s visual identity and dark atmosphere. Its hand-drawn presentation supports the cosmic-horror setting and gives the world a distinct mood, making exploration itself part of the appeal. The soundtrack is also singled out positively in some reviews, including CGMagazine’s assessment.
#1 Best Overall
- Descend below the star-scorched surface and explore multidimensional depths filled with secrets and lore. Witness the corrupted revelry of the Court, lose yourself in the icy tunnels of the Old Waters, and discover the grim fate of the Abandoned Expedition.
- The world is filled with treasures sought by the learned, the brave, and the mad. Scour the halls of your shrine, rend the corpses of defeated deities, and hunt in the hidden corners of the cosmos to find objects capable of granting unique powers.
- Excavate into the rubble of the Gray City to construct a shrine filled with loyal followers. As you expand your shrine and followers, new secrets, rewards, and horrors come to light.
- In-game text languages: English, French, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese.
Exploration and combat deliver familiar genre pleasures
Reviewers point to exploration, fluid play, and brisk combat as reasons to keep moving through the world. Noisy Pixel described the game as approachable for newcomers and noted its lore and light base-building alongside combat. The overall picture is of a game that understands the expected Metroidvania loop—explore, gain abilities, and find more of the world—rather than one that transforms it.
Where do reviews disagree or raise concerns?
Originality is the main reservation
Some critics see Voidwrought as too close to established genre precedents. GameOver.gr criticized its resemblance to other Metroidvanias, while another review excerpt characterized it as competent but seldom compelling. In contrast, a positive Gaming Age assessment highlighted inventive abilities. The difference is largely about how much novelty a player expects from the genre: the game may satisfy someone looking for a well-presented familiar structure more than someone looking for a fresh design blueprint.

Progression and story clarity can be uneven
Some reviews describe exploration as cryptic, which can make it harder to tell where to go next. Storytelling also drew criticism from reviewers who felt the narrative lacked a clear through-line. These are reported concerns, not universal conclusions, and the available review material does not establish that every player will encounter the same friction.
Balance criticism is not universal
Late-game balance appears as a concern in some coverage, but not as a consistent consensus finding. If combat difficulty and boss tuning are central to your decision, treat that criticism as a possibility rather than a definitive description of the whole game.

What do the review scores say?
Metacritic’s captured critic snapshot lists a 76 Metascore from seven reviews. Its user-score snapshot, captured in 2026, is 6.8 out of 10 from 28 ratings. Both are small samples, and user ratings can change as more are submitted; neither figure should be read as a permanent or comprehensive verdict. See Metacritic’s Voidwrought page for its current score and review listings.
Individual estimates also vary in scope. Gaming Age’s review described an approximately 10-hour campaign depending on how thoroughly the player searches. That is one critic’s estimate, not a standardized completion-time figure.

Who is Voidwrought for?
- Consider it if you enjoy atmospheric 2D exploration, hand-drawn worlds, cosmic-horror styling, and familiar Metroidvania progression.
- It may suit newcomers to the genre: Noisy Pixel characterized it as accessible, though that is one reviewer’s judgment rather than a formal accessibility assessment.
- Be more cautious if you want a highly original take on the genre, very explicit navigation, or a story with an immediately clear narrative thread.
- Check more reviews if late-game balance is a deciding factor; criticism on that point is present but not uniform.
