What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
vpcshexh.dll belongs to Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 or 2007, not to Windows itself. If Windows says the file is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the matching Microsoft Virtual PC installation rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The file is associated with Virtual PC’s shell-extension functionality. The generic description “Shell Extension DLL” and a blank publisher field do not identify a separate product called “SHELLEXT Dynamic Link Library.” Microsoft’s archived file manifest lists vpcshexh.dll beside vpchelper.exe and virtualpc.exe as part of Virtual PC 2007.

Check the error context
Note when the message appears:
- When starting Microsoft Virtual PC
- When opening a virtual machine
- When Windows Explorer starts or displays a context menu
- After signing in to Windows
- After uninstalling or upgrading Virtual PC
- After antivirus software removed a file
- After using a cleanup or registry-repair program
Common wording includes:
- “This application failed to start because vpcshexh.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because vpcshexh.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading vpcshexh.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file vpcshexh.dll is missing or corrupted.”
These are common Windows loader messages, not a Microsoft-specific error catalog. In particular, “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of the DLL is missing even when vpcshexh.dll is present.

Inspect shortcuts and startup entries
Right-click the shortcut producing the error and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in. A reference to virtualpc.exe is strong evidence that Microsoft Virtual PC is the calling program.
If the error appears during startup:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Microsoft Virtual PC or a related legacy entry.
- Right-click it and select Open file location, when available.
- Do not delete the entry yet. Record the executable path first.
If only one old shortcut produces the error, it may point to an incomplete or removed Virtual PC installation.
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
1. Repair or reinstall Microsoft Virtual PC
This is the primary fix when vpcshexh.dll was deleted, quarantined, or damaged. Reinstalling the owning product restores the DLL together with its related files and registration, instead of creating a mismatched installation.
Back up your virtual-machine files before removing or changing Virtual PC. Do not assume that uninstalling the program removes only the application. Locate and preserve your virtual hard disks and other VM files first.
Try the Windows repair option
For a modern Windows app-management interface:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Virtual PC.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if the option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Start Virtual PC and open the affected virtual machine.
For the classic desktop installation:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Microsoft Virtual PC.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents these repair paths in its guide to repairing apps and programs.
If Repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall Microsoft Virtual PC from Installed apps or Programs and Features, restart, and reinstall it from a genuine Microsoft installation source. Microsoft retains a Virtual PC 2007 SP1 release-notes page, and the Microsoft Update Catalog lists updates for Virtual PC 2007 and Virtual PC 2007 SP1. These are legacy resources, not evidence that Virtual PC is supported on current Windows releases.
Use the same architecture as the original installation. Do not combine files from separate packages or copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit installation.

After repair or reinstall:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the Microsoft Virtual PC program directory shown by the installer.
- Search that directory for
vpcshexh.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab.
- Confirm that the file is located with the Virtual PC program rather than in
System32,SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or a download directory.
The archived Microsoft manifest identifies these Virtual PC 2007 builds:
| Package | Architecture | File version | Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virtual PC 2007 | x86 | 6.0.156.0 | 58,256 bytes |
| Virtual PC 2007 | x64 | 6.0.156.0 | 65,424 bytes |
These values are useful for checking provenance, but they are not a reason to download a file manually. The correct installer should supply the appropriate build.
What success looks like: Virtual PC starts without the missing-file message, and the affected virtual machine opens normally.
If it fails: Continue with the quarantine check and architecture checks below. Do not copy a replacement DLL into C:WindowsSystem32.
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, excluding time needed to locate suitable legacy installation media.
2. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a legitimate Virtual PC file. This is especially likely when the error began immediately after a security scan or cleanup operation.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an item that refers to Microsoft Virtual PC or
vpcshexh.dll. - Check the detected file path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- The original path belongs to the trusted Microsoft Virtual PC installation.
- The file was installed by a genuine Virtual PC package.
- The detection is understood and the installation is not otherwise suspicious.
- You have verified that the file was not downloaded from a DLL website.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause it to be detected again. If the file came from an untrusted source, remove it and reinstall Virtual PC instead of allowing it.
After restoring a legitimate file, restart Windows and test Virtual PC. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, do not keep restoring it. Run a full scan and obtain a clean installation from a trusted Microsoft source.
What success looks like: The file is restored to the original Virtual PC directory and the application starts without another detection.
If it fails: Reinstall Virtual PC. A quarantine entry does not prove that every copy with the same filename is safe.
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
3. Install the matching architecture
Virtual PC installations and their supporting files must agree about architecture. Microsoft’s manifest distinguishes the x86 and x64 versions of vpcshexh.dll, including different file sizes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Look at System type.
You can also press Windows key + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. In System Information, check System Type.
Then check the Virtual PC package you installed. If you have a mixed installation, remove the incomplete or conflicting copy:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate Microsoft Virtual PC.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install one consistent Virtual PC package that matches the intended architecture.
Do not replace the x64 file with the x86 file merely because the names match. Windows may report the same “missing” or “could not be loaded” message when the file exists but cannot be loaded by the requesting process.
What success looks like: The file is restored by the same architecture-specific installer as the requesting Virtual PC installation.
If it fails: Check whether another old shortcut, startup entry, or user profile is invoking a different Virtual PC copy.
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes.
4. Update Windows and repair broader component damage
vpcshexh.dll is an application file, not a protected Windows system file. SFC and DISM are therefore secondary checks, not the first repair for an isolated Virtual PC error. They are appropriate when the DLL message appears alongside Windows Update failures, installer problems, crashes, or other missing system files.
First install pending updates:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish. Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker instructions.

What success looks like: SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, or reports that it repaired Windows component files, and the broader Windows symptoms disappear.
If it fails: Do not expect SFC to recreate a missing Virtual PC DLL. Return to the Virtual PC repair or reinstall path.
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes.
5. Check dependencies instead of assuming the DLL itself is absent
If vpcshexh.dll exists in the correct Virtual PC directory but Windows still reports that the module cannot be found, the problem may be a missing dependency, damaged access permissions, or an incompatible file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the following:
- Right-click
vpcshexh.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Confirm that the account and local system have permission to read and execute the file.
- Check Properties > Details for a plausible Microsoft Virtual PC file identity.
- Confirm that the application shortcut points to the same Virtual PC installation.
Do not download a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET installer merely because a DLL error appeared. vpcshexh.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Install one of those technologies only when the Virtual PC installer or a separate, clearly identified application specifically requires it.
Windows Features are also not a substitute for Virtual PC repair. To inspect them:

Do not enable random virtualization or legacy features in an attempt to create vpcshexh.dll. A Windows feature change may alter the hypervisor environment without restoring the Virtual PC program files.
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes.
6. Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
A graphics, storage, or virtualization driver problem can cause a virtual machine to fail after the DLL issue has been repaired, but drivers do not normally replace vpcshexh.dll.
If Device Manager shows a related warning:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or System devices.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver obtained through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test Virtual PC.
Do not uninstall a working driver solely because vpcshexh.dll is missing. Driver repair is relevant only when Device Manager or the application identifies a separate hardware problem.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help identify which of several installed drivers is stale instead of making you hunt through versions manually; its free scan shows the reported driver problems, while installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling Microsoft Virtual PC when that is the source of the DLL error.
What success looks like: The related device has no warning icon, its status reports that it is working properly, and the virtual machine operates normally.
If it fails: Stop changing drivers and return to the Virtual PC installation. The DLL error is usually not a Device Manager problem.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide an appropriate registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair tool.
A command such as this is not a safe first response:
regsvr32 vpcshexh.dll
It cannot repair a file that is absent. It can also produce more problems when an x86 file is registered in the wrong environment or when the DLL does not expose the required registration entry point.
Because vpcshexh.dll is associated with shell-extension behavior, its registration should normally be handled by the Virtual PC installer. Only use a registration command if the correct file has already been restored by the official installer and Microsoft or the installer documentation specifically requires it.
8. Scan for a fake or misplaced DLL
The expected file should be associated with a Microsoft Virtual PC installation. Be suspicious if vpcshexh.dll appears only in:
Downloads- A temporary directory
- A browser cache
- A random game folder
- An unrelated application directory
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not copy a file from one of those locations into the Virtual PC directory. Instead:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If needed, use a Custom scan on the suspicious directory.
Microsoft describes these scan choices in its guidance on virus and threat protection.
What success looks like: The scan is clean and the only trusted copy is restored by the Virtual PC installer.
If it fails: Disconnect the questionable file from the system and investigate the unrelated application that placed it there.
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours, depending on the scan.
Why random DLL downloads are the wrong fix
Downloading vpcshexh.dll from a random DLL site is risky and often ineffective. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong Virtual PC architecture, have an incompatible version, or be missing the dependencies that caused the original loader error.
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also make Windows load the wrong file for another program. It does not recreate the Virtual PC installer’s registration, permissions, companion files, or configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a genuine Microsoft Virtual PC installation source, the Virtual PC repair operation, or trusted installation media instead. Microsoft’s archived KB 922897 file manifest is useful for identifying the file, not for obtaining a standalone replacement.
Common causes of the error
| Cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Virtual PC was partially uninstalled | Repair or reinstall the matching Virtual PC package |
| A cleanup tool deleted application files | Reinstall Virtual PC rather than restoring registry entries |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Check Protection History and verify provenance |
| x86 and x64 files were mixed | Remove the inconsistent installation and install one matching package |
| A dependency is missing | Check the full error context, update Windows, and repair the owning application |
| A stale shortcut or startup entry remains | Inspect the executable path and remove the obsolete entry after verification |
| The file is in an unrelated directory | Scan the system and do not copy it into a Windows folder |
| Virtual PC is too old for the current system | Migrate the workload to a maintained virtualization product |
What if the error remains after reinstalling
If Virtual PC still reports the error after a clean reinstall:
- Confirm that the shortcut targets the newly installed
virtualpc.exe. - Search for additional copies of
virtualpc.exeandvpcshexh.dll. - Check Task Manager > Startup apps for an obsolete entry.
- Test the program from another Windows user profile.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows key + R, typing
eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Review Windows Logs > Application for the process name and failing module.
- Check whether the error affects only Explorer, only one shortcut, or every Virtual PC launch.
- Run the DISM and SFC checks described above if Windows has other stability problems.
If the failure began immediately after a known system change and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may be appropriate:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and complete the wizard.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings, not personal files. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain when to use it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Microsoft Virtual PC still supported
No. Microsoft lists Virtual PC 2007 as end-of-support as of July 12, 2017. An old installer or update listing does not mean the product is supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11, and reinstalling it may not be viable on a current system.
If the virtual machine contains an application that must be preserved, export or back up its virtual disk and configuration before migration. Where practical, move the workload to a maintained virtualization product, such as Hyper-V or another current hypervisor that supports the host Windows version. Do not assume that a successful installation of legacy Virtual PC means the environment is supported.
FAQ
Is vpcshexh.dll a Windows system DLL?
No. It is associated with Microsoft Virtual PC 2004/2007 and should not normally be supplied as a standard file in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is it a Visual C++ or .NET file?
No. The file is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Repair Microsoft Virtual PC first.

Microsoft’s archived KB 922897 applies to Virtual PC 2004 and Virtual PC 2007, and its Virtual PC 2007 file tables list the x86 and x64 builds of vpcshexh.dll.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually no. Registering an absent, incompatible, or incorrectly located file does not repair the installation. Let the Virtual PC installer handle registration.
What does “module could not be found” mean if the DLL is present?
It can indicate a missing dependency, an architecture mismatch, damaged permissions, or a different executable requesting another copy. Check the calling program and installation path.
Can Windows Features recreate the file?
No. Enabling a Windows feature does not restore Microsoft Virtual PC application files. Use the Virtual PC repair or reinstall process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
