Start with this quick checklist
Before changing Windows files, identify the program that is trying to load at.dll.
- Note the application named in the error, if one is shown.
- Check whether the error appears when opening a digital audio workstation, audio editor, plugin host, or older multimedia program.
- Look for the full path in the message or in the application’s plugin settings.
- Determine whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether the problem began after uninstalling software, cleaning a disk, restoring a backup, updating antivirus, or reinstalling Windows.
- If Windows Security quarantined the file, inspect that event before downloading anything.
at.dll is the file named in the error, and it is identified as the historical AudioTrack component of K.S. Waves Audio-Track PlugIn. It is not a normal Windows component, Visual C++ file, DirectX file, or general-purpose system DLL.

There is no verified evidence that Windows normally installs this file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The correct location is usually the folder belonging to the old audio application or plugin that installed it.
Do not confuse this historical file with the current Waves AudioTrack product. The modern product has the same general name, but there is no public evidence that a current Waves installer restores this exact legacy at.dll.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because at.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because at.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting at.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading at.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “at.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The file at.dll is missing or corrupted.”
The first group usually means the host cannot find the plugin file where it expects it. “The specified module could not be found” needs more care: at.dll may exist, but a dependency required by that DLL may be missing.
The error appearing only when an audio program starts is an important clue. Windows does not usually load an old audio plugin during normal startup. The affected program is probably scanning its plugin folders or attempting to open a project that references AudioTrack.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the owning application
This is the safest and most likely fix. Restore the application or plugin that originally installed at.dll, rather than copying a replacement into a Windows folder.
Find the application from the error
- Close the error message.
- Write down the name of the program shown in the title bar or message.
- Start the same program again and note exactly when the error appears.
- If the program opens far enough, inspect its plugin, VST, audio effects, or scan settings.
- Look for a plugin path that points to an old installation folder.
- In File Explorer, search the application’s own installation directory for
at.dll, but do not move or replace files yet.
If the error appears immediately after launching a DAW or editor, temporarily disable its plugin scan or remove the old AudioTrack entry from that program’s plugin list. The exact menu name varies by application, but it may be called Plugin Manager, VST Settings, Rescan Plugins, Manage Effects, or Disable Plugin.
If the program starts after the plugin is disabled, the host is working and the broken component is isolated.

- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find the audio application associated with the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option preserves the application’s data while replacing or correcting damaged program files. If there is no Repair option, use the application’s own installer or the classic repair path below.

If the original program is still installed but the error names a plugin folder that no longer exists, reinstalling the host alone may not be enough. The old AudioTrack plugin may have been installed separately.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The application opens without the
at.dllmessage. - The host’s plugin scan completes.
- Audio projects that use the plugin load normally.
- The plugin appears in the host’s effects or instrument list.
If the message remains, write down the exact path the host is trying to load. The next step is to determine whether Windows Security removed the file or whether the host is looking in the wrong plugin directory.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old plugin even when the original file came from legitimate software. Older unsigned or uncommon plugins may receive extra scrutiny, but the publisher name alone does not prove that a copy is safe.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Open any entry referring to
at.dllor the affected audio program. - Record the original file path and the detection name.
- Do not restore the file unless you can verify the original installer, publisher, location, and program relationship.
- If the file is confirmed as part of the original installation, choose Restore or Allow on device, when offered.
- Repair or reinstall the owning application afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring an actual threat can expose the computer. If you downloaded at.dll separately from an unofficial source, do not restore that copy. Remove it, run a full Windows Security scan, and reinstall the application from legitimate installation media.
A restored file can still fail if its dependencies are missing or if the host is loading the wrong architecture. Treat quarantine recovery as a clue, not as the complete repair.
Fix 3: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit match
The documented at.dll is a 32-bit Win32 plugin. That matters on 64-bit Windows.
A 32-bit plugin normally needs either:
- A compatible 32-bit host, or
- A 64-bit host with a reliable bridging mechanism that supports the plugin format.
A 64-bit replacement with the same filename is not a solution. Neither is copying a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit system directory.
Check the host architecture in its documentation, About window, or installation folder. Then check whether the application offers separate 32-bit and 64-bit plugin locations. If the host only accepts 64-bit plugins, the original at.dll may be incompatible even when the file is present.
The correct fix is to install the matching original build of the plugin and use a host that supports it. If the application has a plugin bridge, enable it through the host’s own settings rather than manually moving DLLs.

Fix 4: Determine whether a dependency is missing
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that at.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found at.dll but failed to load a library that it requires.
Use these checks:
- Confirm that the original
at.dllexists in the plugin folder. - Start the host from its normal shortcut.
- Check whether only one plugin fails or the entire application fails.
- Run the application’s Repair, Verify files, or Rescan plugins function.
- Review the application installer documentation for required runtimes.
- Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application or dependency analysis identifies it as required.
When installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages, match the package architecture to the application. Microsoft allows supported redistributables to remain installed side by side, so do not remove existing versions simply because a new one is being installed.
Do not assume that at.dll requires Visual C++, DirectX, or a particular runtime merely because the error is a DLL error. There is no verified evidence that one of those packages is the universal fix for this file.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the audio application and its plugin format
An old host may expect a plugin format or folder layout that newer software no longer supports.
- Open the application’s settings.
- Find Plugins, Audio, Effects, or VST.
- Review the configured plugin folders.
- Remove folders that point to an uninstalled program.
- Add the folder containing the legitimate original plugin, if it still exists.
- Run Rescan, Verify, or Reset plugin cache.
- Restart the host.
If the host continues requesting at.dll after the old plugin was removed, a project template, startup scan list, or cached plugin database may still reference it. Use the host’s plugin manager to disable the entry rather than deleting random DLLs.
If reinstalling the application changes nothing, uninstall it completely using its own uninstaller, restart Windows, and install the correct edition again. Back up projects and custom presets before removing an audio application.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only if Windows itself is damaged
Because at.dll is a third-party plugin rather than a protected Windows file, system repair is less likely to restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows has broader symptoms, such as multiple built-in applications failing, damaged Windows features, or other system files reporting corruption.
Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. SFC then checks protected system files. These commands do not download or reconstruct a missing third-party AudioTrack plugin, so a clean result does not rule out an application installation problem.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes it difficult to diagnose the real cause. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that can show what it identifies, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the owning audio program remains the definitive fix for an application-specific at.dll error.
Fix 7: Check recent drivers or software changes
A driver update is not the primary suspected cause of this file error, but an audio driver or application update can change plugin paths, host compatibility, or startup behavior.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver date and available options.
- Use Update Driver only when a suitable driver is available through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the audio application.
Do not replace a working driver solely because at.dll is missing. Driver changes are more relevant when the application also reports unavailable audio devices, crashes during playback, or fails to initialize its audio engine.
Manually comparing hardware models, driver packages, and 32-bit plugin requirements can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan to identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the audio software that owns at.dll.

If the error began immediately after a software removal, update, or cleanup operation, System Restore may help.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Choose a different restore point, if shown.
- Pick a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if the restore point is suitable.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling an abandoned plugin, and it cannot guarantee recovery of a file that was deliberately removed. Use it when the timing strongly points to a recent system change.
Do not copy at.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
Do not place a downloaded copy in:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not general destinations for third-party plugins. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows system components, but that does not make it the correct location for every 32-bit DLL.
Copying a file into a system directory can create version conflicts, cause Windows to load the wrong copy, and hide the real missing dependency. Put the original plugin only where the owning application’s installer expects it.

Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the registration entry points required by COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general command for repairing every missing DLL. Audio plugins commonly use the host’s plugin scanning system instead of Windows component registration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 at.dll
unless the original installer or the plugin’s documentation explicitly says that the file must be registered. There is no public evidence that this at.dll exposes the registration entry point required by regsvr32.
If a registration attempt produces an error, undoing it will not restore the plugin. Repair the owning application instead.

If the original installer is unavailable, consider these options:
- Restore a full backup containing the original application and plugin.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Recover the old application installer from legitimate archived business media.
- Remove the obsolete plugin from the host’s scan paths.
- Replace the effect with a supported alternative that works with the host’s current architecture and plugin format.
Do not obtain a bare DLL from a random download site. A matching filename does not establish the right version, architecture, dependencies, or authenticity, and a replacement can leave the original application broken.
FAQ
Is at.dll part of Windows?
No. It is identified as a third-party AudioTrack plugin associated with K.S. Waves Ltd. It should not normally be restored from Windows system folders.
Which program installed at.dll?
The verified association is K.S. Waves Audio-Track PlugIn, but no specific current DAW, editor, game, or installer has been confirmed as the universal caller. The error window, plugin path, Event Viewer, and installed-program list should identify the local owner.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs at.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The documented file is 32-bit Win32. Use it only with a compatible 32-bit host or a host that supports suitable bridging.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the application installer or dependency diagnosis identifies it as required. Do not install random runtime packages as a first response to this file-specific error.
Should I download at.dll?
No. Use the original application installer, a legitimate backup, or the publisher’s legitimate support channel. A downloaded DLL may be malicious, mismatched, or missing its own dependencies.
Why does at.dll appear only when my audio program starts?
The host is likely scanning plugins or opening a project that references AudioTrack. Windows does not normally need this file for everyday operation.
Recommended Free Tools
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
Check the host’s plugin path, confirm the 32-bit compatibility, and repair missing dependencies. “Specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency of at.dll, not only to at.dll itself.
Can I put it in SysWOW64?
No. SysWOW64 is not a universal storage location for downloaded 32-bit DLLs. Install the original plugin into the application folder selected by its installer.
What is the final fix if nothing works?
If the host cannot run the legacy plugin and the original installer is unavailable, disable or remove the obsolete plugin reference and use a supported replacement. If the old project depends on it, restore the complete application and plugin from a known-good backup rather than rebuilding the installation with unrelated DLL files.
