Start with this diagnostic checklist
vpnclientpsprovider.dll is a Microsoft Windows component used by the Windows VPN WMI provider. Before changing files, note:
- Which program or script triggers the message: a VPN client, PowerShell command, WMI/CIM tool, startup item, or another application.
- When it appears: during startup, sign-in, VPN connection, or only when one program runs.
- Whether the file exists: check
%SystemRoot%System32wbemvpnclientpsprovider.dll. - Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- Whether the file is authentic: inspect its location and digital signature before restoring anything from quarantine.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. This file is serviced as part of Windows, and a file with the right name can still be the wrong build, architecture, or malicious replacement.

What vpnclientpsprovider.dll does
Microsoft documents vpnclientpsprovider.dll as the DLL behind the VPNClientPSProvider WMI provider. It exposes Windows VPN profile operations through the RootMicrosoftWindowsRemoteAccessClient namespace, including adding, retrieving, configuring, and triggering VPN connections.

It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or ordinary third-party application DLL. Microsoft lists Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 as minimum platforms for the documented provider, but the exact file version depends on the installed Windows release and build.

The usual system location is:
%SystemRoot%System32wbemvpnclientpsprovider.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains native 64-bit system components while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit components. Do not move this file between those folders based only on its filename.
What the error messages mean
You may see any of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because vpnclientpsprovider.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “vpnclientpsprovider.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because vpnclientpsprovider.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading vpnclientpsprovider.dll.”
- “The module vpnclientpsprovider.dll could not be loaded.”
- “vpnclientpsprovider.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located in vpnclientpsprovider.dll.”
A message naming this DLL does not prove that the named application owns it. The application may be calling Windows VPN APIs, PowerShell, WMI, or CIM. If the error appears during startup, a scheduled task or service may be invoking a VPN-related operation before you open any program.
Check the file before repairing it
1. Confirm the path
Open File Explorer, paste this path into the address bar, and press Enter:
%SystemRoot%System32wbem
Look for vpnclientpsprovider.dll.
A missing file points toward Windows component corruption, deletion, or antivirus quarantine. If a copy exists in an application folder, Downloads, a temporary directory, or another unexpected location, do not assume it is safe.
2. Check the signature
Right-click the file, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab. Inspect the signer details and confirm that the file is located in the Windows system directory.
A missing or invalid Microsoft signature does not automatically prove malware, but it means you should not restore or register the file blindly. Run a full scan in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
3. Check Windows architecture and build
Go to Settings > System > About. Record System type and Windows specifications.
A Windows 8-era 32-bit build is not a safe substitute for a current 64-bit Windows component. There is no single universal version, size, or architecture for this DLL across all Windows releases.

Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
Because this is an inbox Windows component, servicing Windows is the safest first repair.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available quality, cumulative, and feature updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test the VPN operation or application again.
If Windows Update reports an error, restart once and check again. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from a search result.
Fix 2: Repair the Windows component store and protected files
Run DISM first, then SFC. Use an elevated Command Prompt, not a regular application window.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run System File Checker separately:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the operation that produced the error.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC uses that repaired source to check and restore protected system files. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, use matching Windows installation media:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<matching-Windows-source> /LimitAccess
The source must closely match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build. An arbitrary ISO can produce another source error.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a system file after a detection or suspected replacement.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any detection that identifies this DLL or the
wbemdirectory. - Preserve the detection name and details before taking action.
Restore a quarantined file only after verifying its original Windows path and Microsoft digital signature. Do not restore a file merely because its filename matches. If the file is restored and Windows Security detects it again, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection instead of repeatedly restoring it.

After handling the detection, run a full scan and repeat DISM and SFC if Windows still reports the DLL as missing.
Fix 4: Repair the calling application or VPN configuration
If the error occurs only in one VPN-management program, script, or WMI tool, the caller may be damaged even when Windows is healthy.

- Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN.
- Select an existing VPN profile, if present.
- Try to connect or open its options.
- If the profile is damaged, remove it only if you have the settings needed to recreate it.
- Recreate the profile through Windows Settings or the organization’s approved PowerShell procedure.
For a PowerShell-specific failure, open PowerShell and check whether the related module responds:
Get-Command -Module VpnClient
If the commands appear but a particular script fails, inspect that script, its permissions, and its WMI or CIM namespace. If only one user experiences the problem, test the same operation from a fresh administrator profile. A damaged user profile or per-user VPN configuration can look like a system DLL failure.
Do not claim that a particular game or application owns this DLL. There is no reliable evidence that one recurring third-party program uniquely causes these errors.
Fix 5: Investigate WMI or COM registration only when the file exists
A file can be present while its WMI provider registration is damaged. This is different from a missing-file problem.

- The DLL exists in the expected Windows directory.
- Its signature is valid.
- DISM and SFC complete without resolving the issue.
- VPN PowerShell or WMI operations fail specifically.
- The error refers to a provider, namespace, class, or entry point.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair command. This provider DLL appears to support COM registration, but registering a copied or mismatched file can create a wrong-version or wrong-architecture registration.
Microsoft’s WMI provider model also involves provider and MOF registration. The correct MOF path and registration state vary by Windows build, so do not run an invented universal mofcomp command.

If you need to test registration, first confirm the file’s architecture and authenticity, create a restore point, and use Microsoft or your organization’s documented procedure for the affected Windows build. If you receive an architecture or entry-point error, stop and return to component repair rather than trying multiple DLL copies.
Fix 6: Reinstall or repair Windows without downloading the DLL
Use a repair reinstall when Windows servicing cannot restore the provider or the installation has broader corruption.
Windows 11: Reinstall now
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power and restart when requested.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.
Windows 10 or Windows 11: installation media
Use matching official installation media if the Windows Update repair option is unavailable.
- Obtain installation media that matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and build as closely as possible.
- Start Windows normally.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - Choose the option to keep personal files and apps.
- Complete the repair installation.
- Run Windows Update after Windows starts again.
Back up important files first. A clean reset or reinstall is a last resort, not the normal response to one missing provider DLL.

A driver problem can prevent VPN operations even after the provider is restored. Check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for approved driver updates.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Check for warning icons.
- Right-click the affected adapter and select Update driver.
- If the problem began after an update, open Properties > Driver and review whether Roll Back Driver is available.
Do not remove a network adapter unless you have a recovery plan and the required driver. The DLL itself is not a network adapter driver, and replacing drivers will not restore a missing Windows provider.

Why copying the DLL usually fails
Manual replacement is unsafe for several reasons:
- The filename does not identify the correct Windows build.
- A 32-bit file can be incompatible with a 64-bit caller or registration.
- A file from another Windows release may have different exports or dependencies.
- Copying into an application directory can make that program load the wrong copy.
- Copying into
System32orSysWOW64bypasses Windows servicing. - The underlying component store or WMI registration may remain damaged.
- A downloaded DLL may contain malware or have been modified.
Microsoft does not provide a standalone redistributable download for this provider. Safe sources are Windows Update, the Windows component store, matching installation media, and an in-place Windows repair.

When to use System Restore
If the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, security-software action, or system change, System Restore may help.

- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files but can roll back system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs. Back up important work before using it.
FAQ
Is vpnclientpsprovider.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it is in the expected Windows provider directory and has a valid Microsoft signature. A copy in an unexpected folder or without a valid signature requires scanning and investigation.
Should I download vpnclientpsprovider.dll?
No. There is no official standalone Microsoft redistributable for it. Repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or an in-place repair.
Should I run regsvr32?
Not for an ordinary missing-file message. Registration is relevant only when the authentic file exists and WMI or COM registration is specifically damaged. Blind registration can create additional problems.
Why does the error remain after SFC?
Restart first, then check whether the caller is loading another copy from its own directory. If DISM had source errors, repair the component store with matching installation media before repeating SFC.
Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX problem?
Not based on the file identity. vpnclientpsprovider.dll belongs to the Windows VPN WMI provider, so reinstalling unrelated runtimes is not the evidence-based first fix.
What if the file is missing only for one application?
Check the application’s configuration, permissions, VPN profile, and WMI or PowerShell call. If the program bundles a different DLL with the same name, repair that program only through its official installer, while leaving the Windows provider in its Windows-managed location.
