“The program can’t start because mc3.dll is missing from your computer” and “The code execution cannot proceed because mc3.dll was not found” usually point to a damaged Autodesk installation. The mc3.dll file can also produce “The MC3.dll file cannot be loaded, try to reinstall the program to fix the problem,” while AutoCAD may show an mc3.dll or mc3d.dll crash instead.
The 60-second answer
mc3.dll is an Autodesk application component, not a Windows system DLL. It may belong to AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture or MEP, Inventor, Maya, 3ds Max, InfraWorks, or older Autodesk installations such as Design Review and related products.

Do not download a random copy or place it in C:WindowsSystem32. Identify the Autodesk product named in the error, then use this order:
- Repair the Autodesk product if the installer offers Repair.
- If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall it from fresh Autodesk installation media.
- Check antivirus quarantine and the installer source.
- Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime if the Autodesk installer or a dependency is damaged.
- Treat AutoCAD
mc3.dllormc3d.dllaccess violations separately from missing-file errors. - Use DISM and SFC only when Windows components may also be corrupted.
The correct file is product- and version-specific. Third-party inventories list old 32-bit builds such as version 6.4.0.0 at approximately 1.61 MB and 4.15.0.0 at approximately 1.68 MB, but these are not a complete Autodesk compatibility list.

First identify what failed
The timing and exact wording tell you which repair path fits.
| What happened | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Autodesk will not launch | Repair the installed Autodesk product |
| Installation stops with “Source file not found” | Download fresh installation media |
| Inventor reports that MC3.dll cannot be loaded | Check Factory, Design Data, and project paths |
AutoCAD crashes with mc3.dll or mc3d.dll |
Check the AutoCAD whitelist or Desktop Analytics configuration |
| The error appeared after cleanup or an update | Check antivirus history and reinstall the product |
| “Specified module could not be found” remains after restoring the file | Repair dependencies, not just the named DLL |
A path under something like C:AutodeskWI... usually refers to installer media rather than the installed program. That means the deployment source may be incomplete or damaged.
The file is private to the application. Autodesk examples place MC3-related files in application, installer, or user-profile folders, not normally in System32 or SysWOW64.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk product
This is the safest first step because it restores the file together with the Autodesk components and dependencies that need to match it.
Classic Autodesk installer
- Press Windows, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall/Change.
- In the Autodesk maintenance window, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows if requested.
- Launch the Autodesk program again.
A successful repair normally removes the missing-file message and allows the product or its add-in to load. If the maintenance window offers Reinstall, use that after Repair fails.
Newer Autodesk installations
Some newer Autodesk products use Autodesk’s newer installation service and do not expose a Repair option. In that case:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the affected Autodesk product.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to your Autodesk Account and download the product again from its official Products and Services area.
- Run the fresh installer as an administrator.
Do not reuse a partially downloaded folder if the original error named a missing file inside the installer source. A fresh download is more reliable than copying mc3.dll into that folder manually.
Fix 2: Reinstall when repair does not restore mc3.dll
Use a full reinstall when Repair completes but the same error returns, or when the Autodesk installer itself is missing MC3.dll.
Before removing the product, back up custom templates, profiles, project files, libraries, licensing information, and any Autodesk settings you need. Then:
- Uninstall the affected Autodesk product from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Download new installation media from your Autodesk Account.
- Temporarily close other installers and applications.
- Right-click the Autodesk installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Start the product before restoring custom add-ins or modifying its folders.
A clean uninstall is more consequential than a normal uninstall. It can remove Autodesk software, residual files, registry entries, and licensing information. Use Autodesk’s clean-uninstall procedure only when ordinary repair and reinstall have failed, and preserve your settings first.
If the file disappears again immediately after reinstalling, check antivirus protection history. Security software may have quarantined an Autodesk component, but you should confirm that in the security product’s history rather than assuming it. Restore only a file verified as part of the official Autodesk installation, then repair or reinstall the product so the file is restored from trusted media. Do not leave antivirus protection broadly disabled.

Fix 3: Repair the installer and Visual C++ dependencies
A missing mc3.dll message can sometimes be the visible symptom of a missing dependency. Windows may name one module even when a library that it depends on is unavailable.
First repair the Autodesk installation as described above. Then repair or reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages required by the Autodesk product:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++.
- Select the relevant redistributable entry.
- Choose Modify if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Autodesk again.
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads to obtain the required architecture. A legacy 32-bit Autodesk application running on 64-bit Windows may require the x86 runtime even though Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a 64-bit runtime does not replace a required 32-bit runtime.
This is dependency repair, not evidence that mc3.dll is a Microsoft file.
Fix 4: Handle the AutoCAD crash separately
An AutoCAD message such as:
Exception in mc3.dll / mc3d.dll ARX CommandUnhandled Exception C0000005 (Access Violation Reading 0x0000)
does not necessarily mean that mc3.dll is missing. Autodesk documents a specific AutoCAD Architecture or MEP crash case involving a damaged WHITELIST.XML file and Desktop Analytics.
For that scenario:
- Close AutoCAD and related Autodesk processes.
- Locate the affected AutoCAD user or application data folder referenced by Autodesk’s support procedure.
- Back up the
WHITELIST.XMLfile. - Delete the affected
WHITELIST.XML. - Start AutoCAD and allow it to regenerate the file.
If the crash continues, use AutoCAD’s Desktop Analytics or Customer Involvement Program settings as described by Autodesk for that release. Do not apply this fix to every missing-file message. Deleting configuration files is appropriate only when the error is the documented AutoCAD access-violation pattern.
Also test AutoCAD before loading third-party ARX modules, plug-ins, or customizations. If the crash occurs only after an add-in loads, update or temporarily remove that add-in rather than replacing mc3.dll.
Fix 5: Check Inventor Design Data and project paths
Inventor can display the exact warning:
The MC3.dll file cannot be loaded, try to reinstall the program to fix the problem.

In Autodesk’s documented Factory add-in case, the underlying problem may involve missing or inaccessible Design Data, an incorrect project mapping, or a network path that Inventor cannot reach. Reinstalling the DLL alone does not correct those conditions.

- Confirm that the project file points to the correct Design Data location.
- Verify that the network share is available.
- Check that your Windows account has permission to read the project and Design Data folders.
- Restore or download the required Design Data through the official Autodesk installation or product workflow.
- Repair or reinstall Inventor if the data path is correct but the error remains.
If the warning appears only when the Factory add-in loads, the add-in and its companion data deserve more attention than mc3.dll itself.
Fix 6: Check Windows integrity only when appropriate
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally reconstruct an Autodesk application DLL, so they should not replace Autodesk repair or reinstall.
Use them when other Windows components are failing, installers behave abnormally across multiple applications, or Autodesk repair does not explain the problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the Autodesk product.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store used by SFC.
Repeating these commands will not create a product-specific mc3.dll if Autodesk’s files are missing. The Autodesk installer remains the definitive source.
If manually hunting through Windows repair steps and repeating DISM/SFC leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what its repair addresses; the full repair requires the paid version, and reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 7: Update drivers only for broader graphics failures
A display-driver update is not the normal fix for a missing mc3.dll. Consider it only when AutoCAD, Maya, 3ds Max, or another Autodesk program also shows graphics corruption, viewport crashes, or failures across several applications.

- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean graphics troubleshooting path, use the GPU manufacturer’s official driver source and select the driver for the correct Windows architecture. Do not replace mc3.dll with a graphics driver file.
Checking dozens of driver versions manually is tedious when several devices may be stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while the full driver installation requires the paid version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the Autodesk product that owns mc3.dll.
32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The known mc3.dll examples are 32-bit builds, but that does not establish that every Autodesk release uses the same architecture. A 32-bit legacy Autodesk application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows compatibility support, but it still needs the correct 32-bit application files and dependencies.
Do not:
- Copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit Autodesk folder.
- Mix
mc3.dllfiles from different Autodesk releases. - Rename
mc3d.dlltomc3.dll. - Place the file in
System32,SysWOW64, or a game directory. - Use
regsvr32 mc3.dllas a repair step.
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX-style libraries. Registering an Autodesk application module does not rebuild its dependencies or make an incomplete installation functional.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows searches the application directory before general system locations in normal DLL loading scenarios. Keeping the private Autodesk binary with its owning program is therefore safer than adding a duplicate to a system folder.
Why DLL download sites are the wrong fix
A standalone DLL download can contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a file intended for a different Autodesk release. Even a genuine-looking copy may fail because the real problem is a missing dependency, corrupted installer, inaccessible Design Data path, antivirus quarantine, or damaged configuration.
The safe source is the official Autodesk installer for the exact product and release. Repair or reinstall the product instead of trying to build a DLL collection in Windows folders.
FAQ
Is mc3.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an Autodesk application component and should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which program installed mc3.dll?
Public Autodesk evidence associates it with multiple products, including AutoCAD, Inventor, Maya, 3ds Max, InfraWorks, and older Autodesk applications. The error path, installed-program list, and timing are the best ways to identify the owner.
Should I download mc3.dll separately?
No. Use Autodesk repair or fresh official installation media. An isolated file may be unsafe or incompatible and often leaves the underlying installation problem untouched.
Why does the installer say “Source file not found”?
The deployment source may be incomplete, damaged, or missing the file named in the installer path. Download fresh media and retry rather than copying a DLL into the source folder.
Does SFC restore mc3.dll?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. Autodesk’s installer must restore an Autodesk application file.

Check antivirus quarantine, disk space, permissions, installer logs, and whether an incomplete deployment source is being reused. If only one Windows user profile fails, test with a new profile. If normal reinstall still fails, use Autodesk’s clean-uninstall process after backing up settings and licensing data.
Should I use System Restore?
Only as a fallback when a restore point predates the failure and normal Autodesk repair or reinstall has not worked. System Restore is not a universal repair for a missing application DLL.
