Yes—a VPS can be an excellent home for a small or medium-sized dedicated game server. It gives you 24/7 availability, a public network address, remote administration and more control than managed game hosting. But “VPS” describes how a server is deployed, not how fast it will be. The game, player count, mods, CPU allocation, storage, region, network quality and provider policies determine whether players get a stable experience.

For most Linux-compatible servers, Ubuntu Server LTS is the best default operating system. Debian is a strong minimal alternative, while Windows Server is the right choice when the game or its tools require Windows. CPU-heavy games, large modpacks and multiple servers may need a dedicated-CPU VPS or bare-metal server instead.

What is a VPS game server?

A virtual private server is a virtual machine running on a physical host that is shared with other customers. A typical VPS includes administrator or root access, virtual CPUs, allocated memory, virtual disk storage, a public IP address and an operating-system image. Provider controls may also include snapshots, firewalls, monitoring, backups and resizing.

The important qualification is that not every VPS has fully dedicated physical resources. Shared-CPU plans can compete with other virtual machines for processor time, while dedicated-CPU plans generally offer more predictable performance. DigitalOcean describes Droplets as Linux-based virtual machines and separates general-purpose and CPU-optimized options; CPU-optimized plans are specifically positioned for CPU-intensive workloads such as game servers. A VPS is therefore a deployment model, not a performance guarantee. Two plans with the same advertised vCPU and RAM can produce different results because of CPU generation, virtualization, contention, storage latency, routing and provider configuration.

Why host a game server on a VPS?

  • 24/7 availability: The server does not depend on a home PC remaining powered on.
  • Public connectivity: Players connect to a stable public endpoint instead of relying on residential upload speed, dynamic IP addresses or port forwarding.
  • Remote administration: You can update, restart and monitor the server through SSH, RDP or a provider panel.
  • Isolation: The game server is separated from personal files and everyday devices on your home network.
  • Scalability: Many providers let you resize CPU, RAM or storage without replacing physical hardware.
  • Automation: Scheduled updates, restarts, backups, monitoring and crash recovery can be scripted.
  • OS flexibility: Providers commonly offer Linux distributions and, on some platforms, Windows images or custom images.

Isolation reduces exposure of your home network, but it does not make the server secure automatically. You still need to patch the operating system, protect credentials, restrict ports, maintain backups and control access.

When a VPS is a poor choice

Do not buy a VPS before confirming that it matches the workload. A VPS may be the wrong option when:

  • The game has no supported dedicated-server software.
  • The server requires Windows-only binaries but the selected provider offers Linux only.
  • The game needs unusually strong single-thread performance that the plan cannot provide.
  • The provider heavily oversubscribes shared CPUs.
  • The required RAM exceeds the plan once the operating system and mods are included.
  • The provider has no suitable region near the player base.
  • The workload involves heavy disk I/O, very large worlds or extensive mod compilation.
  • The provider has weak DDoS mitigation, restrictive game-server rules or unsuitable bandwidth limits.
  • A dedicated server would be cheaper or more predictable at the expected player count.
  • A managed game host would save more time than the VPS saves in monthly cost.

Also check the game publisher’s terms. Some servers require a purchased game, Steam authentication, a server token, a separate license, specific redistribution permissions or a Windows license.

VPS versus the alternatives

Option Advantages Limitations
Home hosting No recurring VPS bill and full hardware control Residential upload limits, changing IPs, port forwarding, power outages and home-network exposure
Managed game hosting Game-specific installers, web consoles, backups, mod tools and support Less OS control, higher per-resource cost and limited game selection
Cloud VPS Fast deployment, snapshots, APIs, flexible regions and easy resizing Shared-CPU variation, billing complexity and possible traffic or storage charges
Dedicated server Predictable CPU performance, more RAM and storage, no virtual CPU contention Higher cost, slower resizing and more administration

Choose a VPS when you want root access and flexibility for one or a few moderate servers. Choose managed hosting when convenience matters more than system control. Move to dedicated CPU or bare metal when consistent performance, large modpacks or multiple servers justify the expense.

What VPS specifications do gaming servers need?

There is no universal requirement for Minecraft, Valheim, Rust, Terraria, ARK, 7 Days to Die, Counter-Strike 2, Palworld, Satisfactory or any other title. Requirements change with player count, world size, simulation complexity, view distance, mods, plugins and update activity. Use this as a planning guide, not a guarantee:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Use case Starting point Important qualification
Very small, lightweight server 1–2 vCPU, 2–4 GB RAM Only suitable for games with modest resource use
Small modded or survival server 2–4 vCPU, 4–8 GB RAM Leave memory for the OS, caches and monitoring
Medium community server 4–8 vCPU, 8–16 GB RAM Prefer a high-performance or dedicated-CPU allocation
Several servers or large modpacks 8+ vCPU, 16+ GB RAM Compare a dedicated-CPU VPS with bare metal
Large, heavily modded or high-concurrency server Case-specific Benchmark the exact game and configuration

CPU

Simulation-heavy games often depend more on single-core performance than on a large vCPU number. Prioritize a strong processor, predictable CPU allocation and low CPU steal over simply buying more advertised vCPUs. A vCPU is not automatically equivalent to a physical core.

Shared CPU is often adequate for a private server or light community workload, but performance can vary. Dedicated CPU costs more and is usually preferable for consistent tick rates, CPU-bound games and busy servers.

RAM

Budget memory for the game process, mods, world generation, the operating system, monitoring and update or extraction tasks. Do not fill RAM completely. Swap can reduce the chance of an immediate out-of-memory kill, but sustained swapping usually damages responsiveness and is not a substitute for adequate memory.

GMKtec K12 Gaming Mini PC Oculink AMD Ryzen 7 H 255 (Upgraded 8745HS) 32GB DDR5 RAM 512GB SSD, Desktop Computer Radeon 780M Graphics, 3X M.2 2280 Storage Expansion, Dual NIC 2.5G, HDMI 2.1, USB4
  • RYZEN 7 H 255 CPU - The Ryzen 7 H 255 is a chip from the Hawk Point family and is an upgraded version of the older Ryzen 7 8745H and has 8 cores (16 threads thanks to SMT support) that run at up to 4.9 GHz, together with the powerful Radeon 780M iGPU. Unlike Zen 3, Zen 4 offers AVX512 support along with other improvements such as larger caches/registers/buffers across the board.
  • GAMING PC - The Radeon 780M (12 CUs / 768 shaders, up to 2,600 MHz) can drive multiple displays simultaneously with a resolution of up to 8K. Hardware encoding and hardware decoding of the most common video codecs (AV1, AVC, HEVC) is also no problem; playing the latest games on FSR settings without issues.
  • WHY CHOOSE DDR5 5600MHz DUAL CHANNEL (2×16GB): With a 5600MHz clock—a 17% frequency uplift over 4800MHz—this kit delivers massive bandwidth gains that elevate real-world performance. Gamers enjoy higher minimum FPS and less stutter in open-world and sim titles for a smoother competitive experience. Video editors and 3D creators benefit from faster 4K/8K timeline scrubbing, quicker renders in DaVinci Resolve and Premiere, and swifter asset loading. For AI/LLM workloads, the superior throughput reduces I/O bottlenecks, cuts token generation latency, and accelerates model fine-tuning by keeping processing cores fed with data—so you wait less and create more.
  • 32GB DDR5 RAM + 512GB SSD - The K12 mini computer is equipped with Dual 16GB (Total 32GB) SO-DIMM DDR5 5600MHz memory sticks. 512GB PCIE 4.0 SSD Drive with 3x M.2 2280 Expansion slots. Each slot capable of reading up to 8TB. (24TB MAX)

Storage

SSD or NVMe storage is preferable for world saves, map generation, mod loading and frequent writes. Include room for backups, snapshots, logs and future expansion. A large disk does not compensate for poor I/O latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network and region

Choose a data-center region close to most players, then verify latency and packet loss from their actual locations. Physical distance is useful but does not guarantee good routing. Check bandwidth policies, port restrictions, IPv4 and IPv6 support, and whether traffic or egress is billed.

IPv4 may cost extra. For example, Hetzner’s cloud documentation lists a €0.50-per-month charge excluding VAT for a primary IPv4 address; verify current regional pricing before ordering. Hetzner Cloud overview

Backups and billing

Calculate the complete cost: VPS, IPv4, backups, snapshots, additional storage, traffic, Windows licensing, DDoS add-ons, taxes and any control panel. A stopped VPS may still incur storage or reserved-IP charges. Snapshot pricing and retention also vary.

Best operating system for a gaming VPS

OS Best for Main advantage Main drawback
Ubuntu Server LTS Most beginners and Linux-compatible servers Broad documentation, provider support and tooling compatibility Online guides can become outdated between releases
Debian Experienced administrators and minimal deployments Conservative packages, stability and low overhead Some third-party guides assume Ubuntu paths or packages
Windows Server Windows-only servers and Windows-specific tools Native compatibility and RDP Licensing, higher baseline resource use and extra maintenance
Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux or Fedora Existing RPM-based workflows Fits an organization’s established ecosystem Less universal game-server guidance

Ubuntu Server LTS: the best default

Ubuntu Server LTS is the safest general recommendation for a first Linux game server. It has broad cloud-image availability, extensive documentation, a large troubleshooting community and straightforward compatibility with SteamCMD, Docker, LinuxGSM and common administration tools. See the Ubuntu Server documentation.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ubuntu is not objectively best for every workload. Release changes can make old guides misleading, and a minimal Debian installation may be preferable for an experienced administrator.

Debian: the conservative alternative

Debian is a strong choice when you want a lean, stable base and are comfortable handling dependencies and troubleshooting yourself. It is especially sensible when the game’s documentation or management tools explicitly support Debian. Hetzner lists both Debian and Ubuntu among its cloud-server operating systems. Hetzner operating-system options

Windows Server: compatibility first

Use Windows Server when the dedicated-server binary is Windows-only, the software depends on Windows services or .NET components, or the official instructions are explicitly Windows-oriented. The players’ desktop operating system does not determine the server operating system.

Windows can include licensing in the VPS price or charge it separately. It also has higher baseline RAM and storage needs, plus RDP and Windows Update maintenance. Do not choose it merely because you use Windows on your gaming PC.

Other distributions and containers

Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux and Fedora are valid when your organization already uses them, but check compatibility with SteamCMD packages, Docker, third-party scripts and the specific game.

Docker helps when you need repeatable deployments, isolated environments or several servers with separately managed data volumes. It is not inherently faster. It adds another management layer, and published container ports can bypass ordinary UFW or firewalld assumptions. Docker recommends understanding the DOCKER-USER chain when filtering traffic. How to set up a game server on an Ubuntu VPS

The following is a generic baseline. The game’s official server documentation remains authoritative for its application ID, ports, launch arguments, dependencies, authentication and licensing. Linode also maintains game-server guides for several titles, while Vultr documents a general SteamCMD installation pattern. Linode game-server guides · Vultr SteamCMD guide

1. Choose the region and plan

Select a region close to the player base, current Ubuntu Server LTS image, SSD or NVMe storage, sufficient memory and a suitable CPU allocation. Add backups or snapshots for valuable worlds, and enable provider-level firewall and monitoring features where useful. DigitalOcean’s creation workflow includes image, size, region, backups and monitoring choices. DigitalOcean Droplet creation guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Connect over SSH

ssh username@SERVER_IP

If the provider initially supplies root access, use it for bootstrap work only. Create a separate administrative account and switch the game process to an unprivileged user.

3. Update the operating system

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo reboot

Reconnect after the reboot. Ubuntu’s OpenSSH documentation covers key authentication, configuration locations, permissions and service logs. Ubuntu OpenSSH guide

4. Create a dedicated game user

sudo adduser steam
sudo mkdir -p /srv/game
sudo chown -R steam:steam /srv/game
sudo -iu steam

Run the server as steam, not root. This limits the damage caused by a vulnerable plugin, compromised token or unsafe server script.

5. Install tools and dependencies

sudo apt install -y steamcmd tmux curl wget unzip tar ca-certificates

Package names and repository requirements vary. Some games need 32-bit libraries, Java, Mono, .NET, GLIBC compatibility packages or other dependencies. Installing SteamCMD alone does not guarantee that every dedicated server will run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Download the server with SteamCMD

steamcmd +login anonymous
  +force_install_dir /srv/game
  +app_update APP_ID validate
  +quit

Replace APP_ID with the game’s dedicated-server application ID. Some games require an authenticated Steam account, purchased game, server token or beta branch. The exact procedure is game-specific, so do not copy an app ID or launch command from a different title.

cd /srv/game
./SERVER_BINARY [GAME_ARGUMENTS]

Detach with Ctrl-B, then D. Reattach with:

tmux attach -t game

Use the real binary name, configuration path and arguments supplied by the game’s documentation.

8. Open only the required ports

sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow GAME_PORT/udp
sudo ufw allow QUERY_PORT/udp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose

The port lines are illustrative. Confirm the exact TCP and UDP requirements for the game, edition and configuration. Gameplay, query, RCON, voice and mod-download functions may use different ports. If you use Docker, review Docker’s firewall behavior instead of assuming UFW rules cover published container ports.

9. Make it persistent with systemd

Create /srv/game/start-server.sh:

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
cd /srv/game
exec ./SERVER_BINARY [GAME_ARGUMENTS]
sudo chmod +x /srv/game/start-server.sh

Then create /etc/systemd/system/game-server.service:

[Unit]
Description=Dedicated game server
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
User=steam
WorkingDirectory=/srv/game
ExecStart=/srv/game/start-server.sh
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
KillSignal=SIGINT
TimeoutStopSec=60

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Enable and inspect it:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now game-server
sudo systemctl status game-server
journalctl -u game-server -f

10. Back up and update safely

Back up world files, configuration, whitelists, administrator lists, bans, mod lists, tokens and deployment scripts. Store secrets securely. A provider snapshot is useful for rollback but is not an independent backup: it may preserve corruption and may not protect against account compromise or provider failure.

  1. Warn players and stop the server cleanly.
  2. Back up saves and configuration.
  3. Run the game update command.
  4. Validate files if supported.
  5. Check mod compatibility.
  6. Start the server and inspect logs.
  7. Test a player connection and save integrity.
  8. Keep a rollback copy before major updates.

How to monitor a gaming VPS

Basic Linux commands provide an initial picture:

top
htop
free -h
df -h
uptime

High CPU “steal” time in tools such as top means the virtual machine is waiting for the hypervisor to provide CPU time. It is a diagnostic clue, not proof of provider wrongdoing. Investigate it alongside per-core utilization, tick time, disk latency and network measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the game itself, monitor server tick rate or simulation time, CPU use by core, memory and garbage collection, disk latency, packet loss, latency, player count and mod activity. Low overall CPU use can still hide one saturated core.

Security and maintenance checklist

  • Use SSH keys rather than password-only authentication.
  • Confirm a second access method before disabling direct root login.
  • Restrict SSH to a known source IP where practical.
  • Validate SSH configuration before restarting the service.
  • Run the game under a dedicated unprivileged account.
  • Use a default-deny inbound firewall and permit only required ports.
  • Keep the OS, SteamCMD, server files, mods and plugins updated.
  • Remove abandoned or untrusted plugins.
  • Keep at least one backup outside the VPS and test restoration.
  • Document the server directory, ports, service name and update procedure.
  • Maintain provider console or recovery access.

Ask the provider about upstream DDoS filtering, packet-rate limits, abuse thresholds, game-server policies and whether the IP can be changed after an attack. A basic VPS does not automatically prevent or absorb a large DDoS attack.

Troubleshooting common failures

Players cannot connect

sudo systemctl status game-server
sudo ss -tulpn
sudo ufw status verbose

Verify the public IP, port and protocol, provider firewall, host firewall, bind address, query settings and whether the server listens on IPv4, IPv6 or only localhost.

The server starts and then stops

journalctl -u game-server -n 200 --no-pager

Common causes include missing libraries, incorrect launch arguments, insufficient RAM, invalid configuration, unsupported mods, a wrong working directory, permissions or incompatibility after a game update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is lag despite low overall CPU usage

Check for one saturated core, CPU steal, disk latency during saves, packet loss, poor routing, garbage collection, mod activity and swapping. A game loop may be bottlenecked by one thread while the rest of the VPS appears idle.

Docker traffic bypasses UFW

Published Docker ports can bypass ordinary UFW or firewalld rules. Review Docker’s firewall documentation and apply filtering through the appropriate Docker-aware chain rather than assuming a standard UFW rule is sufficient. Docker firewall guidance

An update breaks the server

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Restore the previous save and configuration backup.
  3. Revert server files or restore a snapshot.
  4. Remove or update incompatible mods.
  5. Pin a known-good version if the game supports it.
  6. Test before reopening the server.

The VPS is consistently slow

Record CPU steal, per-core usage, RAM and swap, disk latency, network latency, packet loss and game tick metrics. Also check whether the problem appears at particular times. If steal remains high, test another plan, host node, region or provider. If the workload itself is too large, move to dedicated CPU or bare metal.

How to choose a provider

Provider names matter less than the exact plan, region and policy. These are reasonable categories to investigate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • DigitalOcean: A straightforward option for beginners who value a simple control panel, documentation and broad Linux-image support. Its CPU-optimized Droplets are positioned for CPU-intensive workloads, but a low-cost shared plan may not suit a demanding modded server. Droplet features
  • Hetzner Cloud: Attractive to cost-conscious technical users in supported European and North American regions. Check region availability, IPv4 charges, routing and the level of support you need. Hetzner Cloud
  • Akamai Connected Cloud/Linode: Useful for readers who want a mature cloud platform and extensive game-server tutorials. It is not necessarily the cheapest option or a game-specific managed host. Akamai Connected Cloud
  • Vultr: Worth considering when region choice and straightforward deployment are priorities. Its SteamCMD guide is a setup reference, not proof that every plan suits every game. Vultr Cloud Compute

Do not select solely on headline price. Confirm CPU allocation, region, included bandwidth, IPv4 cost, backup and snapshot pricing, storage, DDoS policy, game-server terms, recovery console, upgrade path and any Windows licensing.

VPS buying checklist

  • Is there a region close to most players?
  • Is the CPU shared, high-priority or dedicated?
  • Does the game depend primarily on single-thread performance?
  • Is there enough RAM after reserving capacity for the OS and services?
  • Is the storage SSD or NVMe, and is there room for saves and backups?
  • Are bandwidth, traffic and packet-rate limits suitable?
  • Is IPv4 included or billed separately?
  • Are backups and snapshots independent, restorable and reasonably priced?
  • Does the provider permit public game servers?
  • What DDoS protection and abuse procedures apply?
  • Is there a recovery console if SSH or RDP fails?
  • Can you resize or migrate without an unacceptable interruption?
  • What are the full monthly costs, including tax and add-ons?

Final recommendation

For most first-time administrators hosting one Linux-compatible game, choose a reputable VPS in a nearby region with SSD or NVMe storage, enough RAM and strong CPU performance, then install Ubuntu Server LTS. Use a dedicated game user, SSH keys, a least-privilege firewall, systemd, monitoring and independent backups.

Choose Debian if you prefer a minimal, conservative system and are comfortable administering Linux. Choose Windows Server only when the title or its tooling requires native Windows compatibility. If the game is CPU-bound, heavily modded, highly concurrent or one of several servers on the machine, pay for dedicated CPU or compare bare metal.
