Start with this diagnostic checklist
vrdpauth.dll is a VirtualBox library, not a Windows system file. If Windows reports that vrdpauth.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, check these points before changing Windows:
- Which program appears in the error: usually
VirtualBox.exeorVBoxHeadless.exe. - When it happens: while opening VirtualBox, starting one virtual machine, or using remote display.
- Whether VRDP is enabled: VRDP means VirtualBox Remote Desktop Protocol.
- Your VirtualBox version: open VirtualBox and select Help → About VirtualBox.
- The file path: if a copy remains, its location should be under the VirtualBox installation, not
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - The installation architecture: do not mix files from different VirtualBox releases or 32-bit and 64-bit installations.
The safest repair is to restore the matching VirtualBox installation and its matching Extension Pack. Do not begin by downloading a loose DLL.

What vrdpauth.dll does
vrdpauth.dll is associated with VirtualBox VRDP authentication. Historical VirtualBox releases documented a Windows authentication library named VRDPAuth.dll, which could authenticate remote-desktop users through the Windows host’s Winlogon system.

Current VirtualBox documentation treats VRDP support as an Extension Pack feature. That does not guarantee that every current release installs a file literally named vrdpauth.dll; the filename is most clearly documented in older VirtualBox generations.
A historical installation placed the file in a VirtualBox program directory similar to:
C:Program FilesSunxVM VirtualBoxVRDPAuth.dll
Treat that as an example from an older release, not as a universal path.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall VirtualBox
This is the most likely solution after an update, downgrade, failed uninstall, damaged installation, disk cleanup, manual deletion, or antivirus quarantine.
Check the installed version
- Open Oracle VM VirtualBox.
- Select Help → About VirtualBox.
- Record the exact release shown.
- Close all running virtual machines and exit VirtualBox.
If VirtualBox will not open, check Settings → Apps → Installed apps in Windows and look for the installed VirtualBox entry.
Repair the installation
- Download the Windows host installer for the same VirtualBox release from Oracle’s official VirtualBox Downloads page.
- Run the installer.
- If Windows displays a security prompt, select Yes.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers that option.
- Finish the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open VirtualBox and start the affected VM.
A successful repair means VirtualBox opens without the DLL dialog and the virtual machine starts normally. If repair is not offered or the error remains, continue with a clean reinstall.
Reinstall VirtualBox
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Oracle VirtualBox.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Run the matching Oracle installer again as an administrator.
- Accept the default component selections unless you have a specific reason to change them.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Test the VM before changing any other Windows components.
Your existing virtual machines are normally separate from the program files, but note the locations of important virtual disks and snapshots before uninstalling. If VirtualBox reports that an Extension Pack remains installed, remove it through VirtualBox’s Extension Pack Manager before reinstalling it.

Fix 2: Match the VirtualBox Extension Pack
In current VirtualBox releases, VRDP support is supplied through the Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack. The Extension Pack must match the installed VirtualBox release exactly.
A mismatch can follow an upgrade, downgrade, partial uninstall, or restoring an older VirtualBox installation.
Install the matching pack
- Open VirtualBox.
- Select Tools → Extension Pack Manager. Some versions show this under File → Preferences → Extensions.
- Select any installed Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack that does not match the VirtualBox version.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Download the Extension Pack corresponding to the version shown in Help → About VirtualBox.
- Double-click the downloaded Extension Pack, or return to Extension Pack Manager and select Install.
- Accept the license and confirm the installation.
- Restart VirtualBox and test the VM.
If the graphical interface is unavailable, Oracle’s command-line syntax is:
VBoxManage extpack install <extension-pack-file>
To remove a pack:
VBoxManage extpack uninstall <pack-name>
Do not install an Extension Pack from another VirtualBox generation just because its filename appears similar.
Fix 3: Check whether VRDP is actually enabled
If the error occurs only with one virtual machine, that VM’s remote-display configuration may be involved.
- Shut down the VM completely. Do not leave it in a saved or running state.
- In VirtualBox Manager, select the VM.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Display.
- Select Remote Display, if that section exists.
- If you do not use remote access, clear Enable Server.
- Select OK.
- Start the VM again.
Disabling remote display can avoid loading the affected authentication component, but reinstalling VirtualBox and the matching Extension Pack is the safer long-term repair.
If you intentionally use VRDP, leave the feature enabled and complete the reinstall instead. Also inspect any custom external VRDP authentication setting. A custom authentication library is not repaired by reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or a Windows driver; restore the default VirtualBox authentication configuration or reinstall the software that supplied the custom component.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or a scan.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
vrdpauth.dllor a VirtualBox program directory. - Expand the detection and inspect its full path and source.
- Restore the file only if the path, signature, and VirtualBox origin are clearly legitimate.
Reinstalling VirtualBox from Oracle is preferable to restoring an isolated DLL. If the detection identifies a suspicious directory or an unknown program, do not restore it. Run a security scan and remove the untrusted software according to Windows Security’s instructions.
After reinstalling, check whether Windows Security quarantines the file again. A repeated detection may indicate a damaged installer, a modified installation, or a false positive that needs investigation before allowing the file.
Fix 5: Distinguish a missing file from a loading failure
The wording of the dialog matters:
- “The program cannot start because vrdpauth.dll is missing” usually indicates a missing or incomplete VirtualBox component.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. It does not prove that
vrdpauth.dllitself is absent. - “Not designed to run on Windows” often indicates corruption or the wrong architecture.
- “The procedure entry point could not be located” usually indicates that components from incompatible VirtualBox releases were mixed together.
- “Error loading vrdpauth.dll” can result from a damaged file, a missing dependency, or an incorrect external authentication configuration.
Open the error’s details if available and record the application named in the dialog. Then check the remaining file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search for
vrdpauth.dll. - Right-click each result and choose Open file location.
- Keep only locations that clearly belong to the expected VirtualBox installation.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures if the tab is present.
Do not treat a file’s presence as proof that it is correct. A DLL from another VirtualBox release, architecture, or program directory can produce the same error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit VirtualBox installation or use a file taken from another release. Windows can report a generic loading error when the binary architecture or its dependencies do not match the program.
Use the VirtualBox installer that corresponds to the installed host platform and install the matching Extension Pack from the same release. Avoid manually combining files from old backup folders, another computer, or a different VirtualBox generation.

The correct repair is to replace the complete application installation, not to select a DLL based on a filename alone.

vrdpauth.dll is not a protected Windows component, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. Use Windows servicing commands only when you also have broader symptoms, such as damaged built-in Windows applications, repeated system component errors, or other Windows files failing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall VirtualBox again if the DLL error remains.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands can repair Windows components, but they are not a substitute for reinstalling a missing VirtualBox library.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands is slower than checking the application that owns the file. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its repair actions are provided by the full version, while reinstalling VirtualBox remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Driver updates are usually irrelevant
A graphics, chipset, or storage driver does not normally install vrdpauth.dll, and updating drivers is not the first response to this error. Do not use Device Manager unless the VM also has a separate hardware or display problem.
If you do have broader device symptoms:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not uninstall a working driver merely because vrdpauth.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the specific devices involved; installation of driver updates is handled by the full version, and it is not a replacement for repairing VirtualBox.

- Do not download
vrdpauth.dllfrom a random DLL repository. - Do not copy it into
System32,SysWOW64, or an arbitrary application folder. - Do not mix files from 32-bit and 64-bit installations.
- Do not install an unrelated Visual C++ or DirectX package expecting it to restore this file.
- Do not run
regsvr32 vrdpauth.dllas a routine repair.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. vrdpauth.dll is not normally a COM or ActiveX component, so registration is not the standard fix and may produce a DllRegisterServer error.
Random DLL downloads also risk malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, and a repair that leaves the damaged VirtualBox installation untouched. Use the official VirtualBox installer and the matching Extension Pack instead.
FAQ
Is vrdpauth.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with VirtualBox and should not normally be stored in a Windows system directory.

- 【Versatile Connectivity】Stay connected with multiple ports including USB 3.0 Type-C, USB 3.0 Type-A, and a headphone/mic combo jack, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for seamless wireless networking.
Which applications use it?
The error is generally triggered by VirtualBox.exe, VBoxHeadless.exe, or a VM configured to use VRDP or another remote-display function. A general Windows application should not normally request this library.
Is the file included in every current VirtualBox version?
Do not assume that. Historical VirtualBox releases documented VRDPAuth.dll, while current documentation describes VRDP support through the Extension Pack without promising this exact legacy filename in every release.
Can I fix the error by disabling VRDP?
If you do not use remote display, disabling it may let the VM start. Reinstalling VirtualBox and the matching Extension Pack is still the safer repair.
What if reinstalling VirtualBox does not work?
Confirm that the error names VirtualBox, inspect the full path shown by the dialog, remove any stale Extension Pack, and check whether a custom external authentication library is configured. If the path belongs to another abandoned program, repair that program instead.
Should I run System Restore?
Only as a last resort. System Restore is not the preferred solution for a third-party application file, and SFC will not normally restore vrdpauth.dll.
