vtuneapi.dll is a legitimate Intel-related application DLL associated with Intel VTune profiling technology. It is not part of Windows, so copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not the correct general fix.
The right repair depends on where the message appears. In an Unreal Engine log, the missing file is often an optional profiler probe and may not be causing a crash. In a Windows dialog from a specific game, developer tool, or application, repair or reinstall the program that requested the DLL.
Identify the error before changing Windows
Use the exact wording and the application name to classify the problem.
| What you see | Most likely meaning | First action |
|---|---|---|
Failed to load 'VtuneApi.dll' (GetLastError=126) in an Unreal log |
Optional VTune profiler probe was not found | Ignore it if Unreal continues working |
| “The program can’t start because vtuneapi.dll is missing” | A particular application has a missing dependency | Repair or reinstall that application |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies may be absent | Repair the requesting application and inspect its installation |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” | Wrong, damaged, or incompatible application DLL | Restore the application’s own files |
GetLastError=126 means Windows could not find the specified module. Sometimes the named DLL is missing. Sometimes vtuneapi.dll exists but another DLL that it needs does not.

- Used Book in Good Condition
To identify the caller:
- Note the application name shown in the error window.
- Check whether the message appears during Unreal Editor startup, game launch, or another program’s startup.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Escand check which application was starting. - Search Event Viewer if the program crashes:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
eventvwr.msc. - Open Windows Logs and select Application.
- Look for an error at the same time as the crash.
- Record the executable name, its installation path, application version, Windows version, and whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Do not assume that a nearby vtuneapi.dll message explains every crash. The first fatal exception, graphics-driver error, .NET error, missing project module, or plugin failure may be the real cause.
Fix 1: Handle the Unreal Engine warning
Unreal Engine can attempt to load VtuneApi.dll and VtuneApi32e.dll while checking for profiler support. Typical log entries include:
LogWindows: Failed to load 'VtuneApi.dll' (GetLastError=126)
LogWindows: File 'VtuneApi.dll' does not exist
LogWindows: Failed to load 'VtuneApi32e.dll' (GetLastError=126)
LogWindows: File 'VtuneApi32e.dll' does not exist
If the editor opens, the project loads, and the game runs, this is usually an optional warning rather than a missing file that must be downloaded.
Ignore the warning when Unreal works
If there is no functional problem:
- Open the project normally.
- Confirm that the editor loads and the affected level opens.
- Run the project or game.
- Check whether profiling is actually required.
If everything works, do not add a random DLL to the engine directory. Installing VTune may remove the probe warning, but it will not necessarily fix an unrelated Unreal crash.
Recommended Free Tools
Suppress the optional profiler probe
Epic community guidance reports this project setting:
[Core.System]
ProfilerDisabled=True
To try it:
- Close Unreal Editor.
- Open the project folder.
- Open
Config. - Open
DefaultEngine.iniin a text editor. - Add the section and setting shown above.
- Save the file.
- Reopen the project and check the log.
Project settings are stored in ConfigDefaultEngine.ini, and project configuration can override engine defaults. The setting is community guidance rather than a universal repair procedure for every Unreal Engine version, so remove it if profiling or a project feature depends on the profiler.
Repair the Unreal installation if Unreal actually fails
If the editor will not start or the project fails for another reason:
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the installed Unreal Engine version.
- Open its menu.
- Choose Verify.
- Wait for the engine files to be checked and restored.
- Restart the launcher and Unreal Editor.
If the project uses generated binaries, plugins, or custom modules, rebuild those components after repairing the engine. Keep the project separate from the engine installation. Do not replace an engine file with a loose copy from an unrelated computer.

For a normal Windows dialog, the application’s installer is the safest source of the missing file.
Use a launcher repair or verification feature
For a game or application installed through a launcher:
- Open the launcher.
- Open the library or installed-program list.
- Select the affected application.
- Open its settings or menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Allow the launcher to download damaged or missing files.
- Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
- Start the application again.
This restores the version and architecture expected by that program.
Use Windows app repair
For a Microsoft Store application or a supported Windows app:
The Tool Desk

- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and choose Reset, if available.
Reset can remove local app data, so preserve saves, profiles, or configuration files first.
Use the application installer
If the program has an installer:
- Download the installer only from the application’s official publisher.
- Run it.
- Choose Repair if that option is offered.
- Otherwise install over the existing copy.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If repair does not work:
- Back up saved games, projects, profiles, and custom settings.
- Uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current supported release from the official publisher.
- Restore your saved data and test again.
For an older application, installing the newest Intel VTune package may not provide the exact legacy DLL it expects. The application’s own official installer remains the definitive source for its bundled dependency.
Run the program once as administrator only as a diagnostic:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Test the application.
If that changes the result, the underlying issue may be permissions or an installation path problem. Do not permanently run everything as administrator unless the publisher requires it.
Fix 3: Install Intel VTune only when the application needs it
Intel VTune Profiler is a performance-analysis tool for investigating application and system bottlenecks. It is available as a standalone product or through the Intel oneAPI Toolkit.
Install it when:
- You intentionally use VTune profiling.
- A developer tool explicitly documents VTune integration.
- The application’s publisher says Intel VTune is a required dependency.
- You are restoring a known Intel development environment.
Use Intel’s official VTune download page or the Intel oneAPI Toolkit installer. On Windows, Intel documents installation under locations such as:
C:Program FilesInteloneAPI
C:Program Files (x86)InteloneAPI
The general installation process is:
- Download the official Intel Windows installer.
- Run the
.exewith administrative privileges. - Choose Recommended or Custom installation.
- Select VTune if using the oneAPI installer.
- Complete setup.
- Optionally run
vtune-self-checker.batfrom the VTunebin64directory. - Restart the application that needs VTune.
Do not install VTune merely because Unreal printed an optional probe warning. It may remove that message, but it does not repair a game, plugin, graphics driver, or project module.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit, 64-bit, and dependent modules
A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit dependency. A 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit dependency. Windows being 64-bit does not make the two DLL architectures interchangeable.
Installing the wrong architecture can produce:
- “Bad image” errors.
- “Not designed to run on Windows” messages.
- A continued missing-module error.
- An application that starts and then closes.
- A crash during startup.
Do not install both architectures indiscriminately. Identify the executable that loads the DLL and obtain the matching version from that program’s installer.
Also remember that error 126 can indicate a missing dependency of vtuneapi.dll. If repairing the application restores the named file but the error remains, the application may have another absent runtime, plugin, or vendor component. Reinstall the application’s documented prerequisites rather than adding unrelated DLLs.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software may quarantine a genuine application file, or it may correctly block an unsafe replacement.

To inspect Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.

- Select Protection history.
- Find the event involving
vtuneapi.dll. - Expand it and review the detected path and action.
Restore or allow the file only when all of these are trusted:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The file came from the official application or Intel installer.
- The file path belongs to that installation.
- The publisher and digital signature are valid.
- The file’s hash matches a known-good copy supplied by the publisher or your organization.
- The detection has been reviewed and is believed to be a false positive.
If the file came from an unofficial DLL download page, do not restore it. Reinstall the trusted application instead. Do not disable antivirus globally to make the program start.
Fix 6: Update Windows and repair broader system corruption
SFC and DISM are not normal repairs for vtuneapi.dll, because it is an application DLL rather than a protected Windows system file. Use these commands when several unrelated Windows components are failing or Windows itself reports corruption.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the application.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected system files. SFC will not normally recreate an Intel application DLL. Reinstall the calling application if vtuneapi.dll remains missing.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and show what it finds; its repair function requires the full version, and reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix for its own missing DLL.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when evidence points to drivers
A vtuneapi.dll error by itself does not prove that a driver is responsible. Consider driver work when the application also reports graphics failures, device errors, or crashes immediately after a driver update.
Check Device Manager
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and other relevant categories.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Use Driver → Update Driver if an update is required.
- Restart Windows.
Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package for graphics and specialized devices. Do not replace vtuneapi.dll with a driver DLL.
If checking every device manually is impractical, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported outdated drivers; the free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing the application that owns vtuneapi.dll.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began immediately after a driver, Windows update, or software installation and a restore point exists:

- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally removing personal files. It will not replace every application DLL, so repair the affected program afterward if necessary.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the application’s dependencies. A loose replacement also hides the original installation problem.
Use the official Intel installer for genuine VTune functionality, or the affected application’s official installer for a bundled dependency.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not universal storage locations for third-party application files. Windows uses defined DLL search behavior, and placing an unverified DLL in a system directory can create compatibility and security problems. Put the file only where the owning installer places it.

Do not use regsvr32 as a DLL installer
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified basis for registering vtuneapi.dll this way.
Do not run:
regsvr32 vtuneapi.dll
regsvr32 /i vtuneapi.dll
A message saying that DllRegisterServer was not found would not repair this application dependency.
If the error still persists
Collect these details before contacting the application publisher or Intel support:
- The exact error text.
- The executable name and full installation path.
- Whether the message is an Unreal log warning or a blocking Windows dialog.
- Application and Windows versions.
- 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Whether the file exists in the application’s own directory.
- Antivirus protection-history details.
- The relevant Event Viewer entry.
- The first fatal exception or crash module, if another error follows.
If Unreal works normally, treat the VTune message as an optional warning. If a particular application refuses to start, repair that application first. Install Intel VTune only when documented integration requires it.

Is vtuneapi.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a real Intel-related DLL associated with VTune profiling technology. Its absence alone does not indicate malware.
Is vtuneapi.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an application file, not a normal Windows system DLL.
Should I download it separately?
No. Use the official Intel VTune installer when VTune is required, or repair the application that requested the file.
Why does Unreal mention VtuneApi32e.dll?
Unreal may probe for optional Intel VTune profiler components. If the editor or game continues running, the message can be harmless.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Normally no. regsvr32 is for compatible COM DLLs, not for installing arbitrary runtime or profiling libraries.
Can SFC restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not generally restore third-party application files.
Why did reinstalling VTune not solve the error?
The application may require an older bundled version or a dependency with a particular architecture. Repair or reinstall the application that displays the error.
What if the file was quarantined?
Verify the publisher, path, digital signature, and hash before restoring it. If the source is unofficial, remove it and reinstall the trusted application.
