vxcsub.dll is an old application DLL associated with Prassi Products and VERITAS optical-disc software. When Windows reports that vxcsub.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the program that requested it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record these details:
- Which program shows the error? Read the title bar and message carefully. Check whether it appears when opening a CD/DVD-burning application, a shortcut, or another older program.
- When did it begin? Note whether the problem followed a Windows reinstall, backup restoration, antivirus cleanup, application move, update, or uninstall.
- Is the program old or 32-bit? A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications. That does not make a 32-bit application DLL a Windows system file.
- What exact message appears? “The specified module could not be found” can indicate a missing dependency, even when
vxcsub.dllitself is present. - Was the file quarantined? Check Windows Security before reinstalling or restoring anything.
Do not copy vxcsub.dll into System32 or SysWOW64, and do not begin by installing a Visual C++ package.

Reported file metadata describes vxcsub.dll as “Various Services in C”, part of Prassi Products, with VERITAS Software Corp. identified as the developer. The file is associated with the Prassi recording engine used in older CD/DVD-authoring and disc-burning software, including VERITAS MyCD and related bundled products.
The filename alone cannot identify one exact application. Prassi technology was licensed and bundled in more than one optical-drive or recording product, so the program named in the error is the most useful ownership clue.

PxSub.dll is also reported as an alternate or related filename. That does not mean you should rename one file to the other. Use the original installer or recovery media for the specific application.
There is no evidence that vxcsub.dll is:
- a Windows system component;
- a DirectX file;
- a .NET file;
- a Visual C++ Redistributable file; or
- a general-purpose runtime required by Windows.
Reported third-party metadata describes the file as a Win32 application DLL, but old file listings are not current VERITAS specifications. Confirm the architecture and file identity from the original installer whenever possible.
Fix 1: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old application DLL, especially after a signature update or a scan of legacy software.

- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
vxcsub.dllor the application that uses it. - Expand the entry and inspect the reported file path, threat name, and action.
- Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
- Restore it only if you have confirmed that:
- it came from the legitimate application directory;
- the parent application is trusted;
- the file path matches the original installation; and
- a current security scan does not identify the application as malicious.
If the entry is clearly associated with a legitimate installation, choose Actions and then Restore, if that option is available. Start the program again.
If the error returns immediately, Defender or another security product may be removing the file again. Do not repeatedly restore it. Update the security product, scan the entire application directory, and obtain a clean copy by reinstalling the parent program from original or verified media.
Microsoft warns that restoring an actual threat can put the device at risk. If you cannot verify the file’s origin, leave it quarantined and proceed to a clean application reinstall.
Fix 2: Identify the application and use its repair function
The safest copy of vxcsub.dll is the one supplied with the application that needs it.
Look at the error window, desktop shortcut, Start menu entry, or Task Manager to identify the executable:
- Reproduce the error.
- Note the program name in the message or window title.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target and Start in.
- Record the executable path without changing it.
If the program is already open:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Find the program’s executable.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.

- Settings or Preferences;
- the original installer;
- Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
For an installed entry that supports it:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
A successful repair should restore the application’s private DLLs to its own installation directory and allow the program to launch without the vxcsub.dll message.
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall only the affected application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original CD, OEM recovery media, or a verified installer supplied by the hardware or software publisher. Do not uninstall unrelated Windows components.

Windows normally searches an unpackaged application’s own directory for its DLLs before searching system directories. This is why the correct location is usually beside the executable that loads the file, not in a Windows folder.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete legacy application
Use a full reinstall when the program was moved, partially removed, damaged by cleanup software, or restored from an incomplete backup.
- Back up any disc-project files or application settings you still need.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for the disc-burning or optical-drive software named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Insert the original installation disc or open the verified installer.
- Install all application components, not only optional shortcuts or documentation.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the program from its newly created shortcut.
If the software was bundled with an optical drive, use the software disc or recovery package that came with that hardware. Current VERITAS download pages are product- and entitlement-based, and older Prassi or MyCD products may not appear in the current product list. Do not assume a modern VERITAS download is the correct installer.
If the installer refuses to run:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Try Run this program as an administrator.
- If necessary, use a compatibility mode for an older Windows version.
- Apply the setting and run the installer again.
Compatibility settings may help the installer or program start, but they do not prove that the application is supported on the current Windows release. If the program still fails after a clean reinstall, it may depend on other obsolete components.
Fix 4: Test for a missing dependency
A message naming vxcsub.dll does not always mean that this file is the only problem. Windows may find vxcsub.dll but fail to load a dependency that it requires.
First, inspect the application directory:
- Open the path recorded from the shortcut or Task Manager.
- Confirm whether
vxcsub.dllis present beside the program executable. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if one is present.
- Review the Details tab for the reported description and publisher.
- Do not replace the file solely because its size or version differs from an online listing.
If the file exists but the error says “The specified module could not be found,” reinstall the complete application rather than copying individual files. The missing item may be another private DLL, an old driver, or an application component.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables unless the error separately names a Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. Installing an unrelated runtime will not normally recreate vxcsub.dll.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Older Prassi and VERITAS disc applications commonly use 32-bit components. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit programs, but the application must still have all of its original files and compatible dependencies.

Do not use the folder names as a repair instruction:
System32is not a generic destination for third-party DLLs.SysWOW64is not a generic destination for third-party DLLs.- Neither folder should receive random copies of
vxcsub.dll.
If you need to confirm the program architecture, inspect the original installer or use a trusted PE inspection tool. Treat conflicting online metadata cautiously. The application’s installer is more useful than an unverified file index.
If the program is extremely old, test whether the error occurs only under a particular user account:
- Open Settings → Accounts → Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create a temporary local account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch the application.
If it works there, the issue may involve permissions, a damaged user profile, or per-user configuration. If it fails for every user, focus on the application installation and compatibility.
Fix 6: Run Windows repair commands only for Windows corruption
vxcsub.dll is an application file, so System File Checker will not normally restore it. Use Windows repair commands when other symptoms suggest broader corruption, such as broken Windows features, repeated system-file errors, failed updates, or several unrelated applications failing.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then run DISM followed by SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the Prassi or VERITAS application.
Repeatedly running these commands without knowing what changed can make diagnosis harder. Reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when its private DLL is missing.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points to drivers
A missing vxcsub.dll message is not usually a device-driver problem. However, an old disc-burning application may interact with optical-drive, chipset, storage, or controller software.

- Select Device Manager.

- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.

- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer drivers from the computer, motherboard, or optical-drive manufacturer. Do not remove a working storage or chipset driver merely because its date is old.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention, while driver installation requires the full version. Use it only as an optional aid; reinstalling the parent application is still the correct repair for a missing private DLL.

System Restore is useful if the error appeared immediately after an installation, cleanup operation, driver change, or update and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert installed-program state and system settings, but it is not a replacement for application installation media. Personal documents are not normally the target of the process, but review the restore information carefully before continuing.

Fix 9: Scan for malware instead of replacing the DLL
A file named vxcsub.dll is not automatically safe because it has an old publisher name. Malware can use a familiar filename or replace a legitimate application DLL.
Run a scan when:
- the file is outside the expected application directory;
- its signature is missing or invalid;
- Defender repeatedly detects it;
- the program behaves suspiciously;
- several unrelated DLL errors appear.
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options and choose Full scan. If you suspect persistent malware, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same area. Save your work first because Windows will restart.
After cleaning the device, uninstall and reinstall the parent application from trusted original media. Never obtain a replacement DLL from a random download page. Such files may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, have the wrong version, or leave the actual missing dependency unresolved.
Do not register vxcsub.dll blindly
Do not run regsvr32 vxcsub.dll simply because an error mentions a DLL.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a COM or ActiveX registration interface, usually through an exported DllRegisterServer function. A private application DLL may not provide that function. Registration can fail with an error or accomplish nothing.
Use regsvr32 only if the application vendor’s documentation explicitly instructs you to register this exact file. For normal Prassi or VERITAS application repair, reinstalling the complete program is the appropriate action.
If reinstalling still does not work
Check these points in order:
- Confirm that the shortcut launches the executable you repaired, not an older copy elsewhere.
- Search for duplicate installations and remove obsolete shortcuts.
- Confirm that
vxcsub.dllis beside the correct executable. - Review Windows Security Protection history again.
- Try running the program as administrator.
- Review compatibility settings.
- Check Event Viewer for application errors:
- right-click Start;
- select Event Viewer;
- open Windows Logs → Application;
- find an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Check disk health if files keep disappearing or becoming corrupted.
- Consider whether the application is simply too old for the current Windows release.
If you no longer need the disc-burning software, uninstall the parent program instead of preserving an orphaned DLL. Removing the unused application is safer than placing an isolated copy of vxcsub.dll in Windows folders.
