Messages associated with this error
You may see one of these messages:

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that npggnt.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the GameGuard module. The repair process is the same initially: restore the complete GameGuard installation through the game’s official client.
Fix npggnt.dll in the safest order
Work through these steps in order. Close the game before deleting or repairing any of its files.
1. Restart Windows and retry the game
A locked GameGuard file or unfinished update can produce a temporary load failure.
- Save your work and close the game.
- Exit the game launcher completely.
- Open the notification area near the clock and quit the launcher if it has a tray menu.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the game launcher normally.
- Start the game once.
If the game starts, the problem was likely a temporary lock or incomplete initialization. If the same message returns, continue with file repair.
If the publisher’s support instructions specifically require elevated permissions, right-click the game launcher and select Run as administrator for one test. Do not permanently run every game as administrator unless the publisher recommends it.
2. Verify or repair the game files
This is the preferred fix because the launcher can obtain the correct GameGuard files for that particular game and release.
The wording varies by launcher, but look for Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, Scan and repair, or Check files.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch the game.
Another launcher
- Open the game’s official launcher.
- Open the game library or installed-games page.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its settings menu, often shown as a gear or three-dot button.
- Select Verify, Repair, or Check files.
- Allow the launcher to download or replace damaged files.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
A successful repair may report that files were reacquired, repaired, or validated. The practical test is whether the game reaches its normal login or main menu without the npggnt.dll error.
If verification completes but the message remains, do not copy a DLL from another computer or another game. Continue to the GameGuard regeneration step.
3. Rebuild the game’s GameGuard folder
A damaged or incomplete GameGuard update is the most likely cause of this error.

- Close the game.
- Exit the game launcher.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes or Details.
- End the game and launcher processes if they are still running.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the affected game’s installation folder.
- Locate the folder named
GameGuard. - Delete that
GameGuardfolder. - Emptying the Recycle Bin is not necessary at this stage.
- Start the official launcher.
- Launch the game.
The exact folder path differs between games. Do not assume that every installation uses the same location. Do not delete unrelated folders or a shared directory simply because its name contains INCA. Some GameGuard installations use shared components, and vendor instructions may differ.

If the launcher reports that the GameGuard folder is in use, restart Windows and repeat the process before trying to force-delete it. If the folder returns but the error immediately returns too, proceed to the antivirus and installation checks below.
4. Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Security software may quarantine or block GameGuard because anti-cheat software monitors processes, drivers, and injected modules. That detection should not automatically be dismissed as a false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the game directory or GameGuard.
- Note the detection name and the file path.
- If
npggnt.dllwas quarantined, do not restore it immediately. - Update the game through its official launcher or reinstall it from the official source.
- Scan the complete game installation.
- If the game publisher confirms that the detection is a false positive, follow its instructions for restoring the file or creating a narrowly scoped exclusion.
Third-party antivirus products have their own quarantine and detection-history screens. Review those records as well.

Do not permanently disable antivirus protection, whitelist a random DLL, or create a broad exclusion for C:Windows. If the file appears outside the expected game directory, treat that as a separate security issue and scan the system.
5. Repair or reinstall the game
If GameGuard files are damaged, partially removed, or mixed with files from an older patch, a full repair or reinstall is more reliable than manual replacement.
Try the launcher’s repair function first. If it has no repair function:
- Back up game saves or configuration files if the publisher stores them locally.
- Uninstall the affected game from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the game, choose the three-dot menu, and select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the old game directory remains.
- Remove only the remaining game folder if the publisher’s instructions allow it.
- Download the installer from the game publisher or your official storefront.
- Install the game again.
- Run its first update completely.
- Start the game without copying files from the old installation.
A reinstall is the definitive fix when the installation is damaged or the game has an incompatible mixture of old and new GameGuard files.

Check dependencies without guessing
Understand 32-bit and 64-bit requirements
A 32-bit game needs 32-bit dependencies even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Windows architecture alone does not tell you which runtime a particular game requires.
Do not infer the correct npggnt.dll architecture from a file downloaded online. Let the official game installer supply the module and its supporting files.
If the actual error names a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime DLL, install the runtime package required by the game publisher. Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads provide the official packages. Install the architecture that matches the application, not merely the architecture of Windows.
A Visual C++ Redistributable is not a general repair for npggnt.dll. Install it only when the error or the game’s documentation identifies that dependency.
Check Windows optional features
GameGuard itself is not repaired by randomly enabling Windows features, but an older game may require a Windows component documented by its publisher.
To review optional features:
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the list of Windows Features.
- Enable a feature only when the game publisher or the game’s documentation specifically requires it.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the game again.
Do not enable legacy components solely because npggnt.dll is missing. The file belongs to GameGuard, not to .NET, DirectX, or Windows Features.
Check for driver and software conflicts
GameGuard can be affected by incompatible security software, overlays, debuggers, sandbox tools, VPN utilities, or another anti-cheat product. A display-driver problem is not the usual cause of a missing GameGuard DLL, but outdated drivers can cause separate game startup failures.
First close overlays and conflicting utilities:
- Exit screen-recording and hardware-monitoring utilities.
- Close debuggers and sandbox tools.
- Temporarily exit other game launchers.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game with only its official launcher running.
For a graphics or chipset driver problem, use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package. You can inspect devices without installing anything:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, System devices, and Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Use Driver > Update Driver only when an appropriate driver is available from Windows or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Do not use Device Manager to replace npggnt.dll; it is not a device driver.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing dozens of driver versions is time-consuming. Repair Windows components only as a later step

Before running repairs, save your work and close applications.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Do not close the terminal while DISM is working. It may appear to pause during some stages.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open Terminal (Admin) again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game.
Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions explain the result messages and recommended order.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If both commands complete successfully but the game still reports npggnt.dll, return to the game launcher and rebuild or reinstall GameGuard. These commands do not usually download third-party game modules.

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. GameGuard modules are loaded by the game and its security system, not normally registered as global Windows components.
Do not run:
regsvr32 npggnt.dll
This command will not rebuild GameGuard and may produce a message stating that the entry point is missing. Microsoft explains this distinction in its documentation about Regsvr32 and DllRegisterServer.
What not to do
Do not download npggnt.dll from a random DLL website
A standalone download may contain malware, the wrong revision, the wrong architecture, or a file modified outside the game’s update process. It may also hide the real cause, such as an incomplete patch or antivirus quarantine.

- The affected game’s Verify, Repair, or Check files function
- The game publisher’s official installer
- The official storefront or launcher used to install the game
- The publisher’s own support instructions
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose DLL storage locations. Copying GameGuard into them can create version mismatches, loading conflicts, and an unnecessary security exposure. It will not make the game’s private GameGuard installation correct.
Do not mix files from another game
Multiple games may use GameGuard, but their files, versions, configuration, and update paths may differ. A copy that works with one game is not necessarily compatible with another.
Do not use registry cleaners
A missing GameGuard module is normally an installation or security-software problem, not a missing registry entry. Registry cleaners cannot download the correct game files and can introduce additional application problems.

If the error keeps returning
If verification and GameGuard regeneration work temporarily but the error returns, investigate these causes:
- Antivirus repeatedly quarantines the file.
- A game update is incomplete or incompatible.
- The game directory has restrictive permissions.
- Another security or anti-cheat product is blocking GameGuard.
- The storage drive has file-system errors.
- The installation contains files from different releases.
- The publisher’s current GameGuard update is failing.
Record the following before contacting the game publisher:
- Game name
- Launcher or storefront
- Windows version
- Exact error text
- Any GameGuard error code
- Game installation path
- Antivirus detection name and file path
- Whether verification completed successfully
- Whether deleting the GameGuard folder changed the behavior
- Relevant launcher or game logs
The game publisher is the authoritative support channel for GameGuard-specific compatibility and update failures.
