A WAD file and a source port are different parts of a Doom setup. The WAD is the game data—levels, graphics, sounds and related resources—while the source port is the program that interprets that data and runs it on a modern computer. Most custom WADs also need an IWAD containing the base game, such as doom.wad or doom2.wad.
That distinction answers the common beginner questions: a source port alone is not necessarily a complete game, and a PWAD usually cannot run without a compatible IWAD and an engine that supports the WAD’s format. When a file fails in Chocolate Doom or a feature-rich port, check those three pieces—base data, engine and compatibility target—in that order.

What a WAD file actually is
WAD is the traditional container format for Doom game data. It packages the resources an engine needs to build the game world and present it to the player. The data can include maps, textures, sprites, music, sound effects, menus and other game resources. A WAD is therefore not an executable and not, by itself, a guarantee that a game will start.

IWAD: the base game data
An IWAD contains the core data for a Doom release. It supplies the resources and usually the campaign that an engine needs in order to create a complete playable environment. Common filenames include doom.wad, doom1.wad, doom2.wad, tnt.wad and plutonia.wad. The filename convention helps a port identify the file, but the exact file and edition still have to match what the WAD or port expects.
Chocolate Doom’s setup documentation treats an IWAD as a prerequisite alongside the port itself. In practical terms, installing an executable without supplying the corresponding game data leaves the engine with nothing complete to run.
PWAD: an addition or replacement
A PWAD is generally an extra or modifying data file loaded with an IWAD. It may add maps, replace textures and sounds, change gameplay or provide a complete conversion built on the Doom engine. The PWAD normally does not contain every base resource required by the game; it expects the selected IWAD to provide what it does not replace.

Its readme is part of the technical requirements, not optional background reading.
What a source port is
A source port is an engine program derived from, or designed to be compatible with, Doom. It supplies the executable code: input handling, rendering, sound playback, menus, game rules, file loading and the platform-specific work needed to run on a current operating system. The WAD supplies content; the port supplies the machinery that interprets it.

The Chocolate Doom project FAQ describes Chocolate Doom as “a source port of the game Doom, by id Software.” Its stated aim is to recreate the behavior of the original DOS versions, including their bugs. Other ports make different choices, adding rendering options, scripting systems, convenience features or support for modern modification formats.
Because ports implement the engine differently, the same WAD can behave differently—or fail to load—depending on the program used. A port is not a universal compatibility layer. Its documentation and the WAD’s stated target determine whether the combination is appropriate.
WAD versus source port at a glance
| Question | WAD file | Source port |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A data container | An executable game engine |
| What does it provide? | Levels, graphics, sounds, music and other game resources | Rendering, game rules, input, audio, menus and file-loading behavior |
| Can it normally run alone? | No; it usually needs an engine and, for a PWAD, an IWAD | Not necessarily; it normally needs compatible game data |
| Typical examples | doom2.wad as an IWAD; a community map pack as a PWAD |
Chocolate Doom or another port named by the WAD’s instructions |
| What determines compatibility? | Its required IWAD, port family and compatibility level | The formats and engine behavior it implements |
Thinking in those terms prevents a common mistake: treating “downloaded a WAD” as equivalent to “installed a game.” You have acquired data, not necessarily the engine or the base campaign that data assumes.
Do you need Doom to play a WAD?
For most PWADs, you need the original game’s data in the form of a compatible IWAD, plus a source port. A legitimate installation of the relevant Doom release is the usual way to obtain that data. Keep the IWAD intact; do not rename a different game’s file merely to make a launcher accept it.
There is a separate free-software path. The Freedoom project provides freely licensed game data intended to be used with source ports. Its manual explains placing the Freedoom .wad files alongside the port or selecting one explicitly with an option such as -iwad freedoom1.wad. This supplies an alternative base game, but it does not make every commercial-Doom PWAD compatible. A modification may depend on maps, names, textures, behavior or assumptions that exist only in a particular IWAD.

An IWAD from one family cannot be treated as a drop-in substitute for every other family. A PWAD that targets Doom II may require doom2.wad, while another may specify an episode IWAD or Freedoom’s corresponding file. Read the author’s requirements before choosing the base data.
How IWAD and PWAD loading fits together
At startup, a port first establishes the base game from an IWAD. It then applies any additional files in the order requested. A normal PWAD load adds or replaces resources after the IWAD has been opened. The exact command-line spelling varies by port, but the concepts are consistent.
Ordinary PWAD loading
A generic command looks like this:
port -iwad doom2.wad -file mymod.wad
Replace port with the executable you installed and use the IWAD named by the modification. The -file option tells ports that support it to load the additional WAD. Some launchers offer equivalent fields in a graphical interface; the labels may be “IWAD,” “Game file,” “Additional files” or “PWAD.”
Total conversions and special merges
A total conversion may replace enough of the game that the author expects a merge into the main IWAD or a dedicated launch method. Chocolate Doom’s project documentation specifically warns that some total conversions distributed as PWADs will not work when simply appended with -file. In that situation, follow the conversion’s readme and the port’s documented procedure instead of trying random combinations of files.
A failed ordinary load does not prove that the WAD is corrupt. It may indicate that the conversion needs a different startup mode, a merged data file, a different IWAD or a port with features Chocolate Doom intentionally does not implement.

Choosing a port without guessing
There is no universal “best” source port. The sensible choice follows the WAD’s target and your priorities.
| If you care most about… | Look for… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Original DOS behavior | Chocolate Doom or another port explicitly targeting vanilla behavior | Chocolate Doom aims to reproduce original behavior, including bugs, which matters for vanilla-compatible modifications and demo fidelity. |
| Extended mod features | A feature-rich port such as GZDoom when the WAD calls for it | Freedoom’s manual describes hardware rendering and extended modification support in GZDoom and presents it as one starting point for broader mod capability. |
| A specific conversion’s requirements | The port family and compatibility level named by the author | Modern enhancements can change behavior compared with the original engine; the author’s target is the controlling requirement. |
| Easy setup on your platform | A port whose IWAD discovery and PWAD-loading instructions match your system | Ports differ in folder conventions, launch options and how they locate game data. |
When a readme says “vanilla,” it generally signals a preference for behavior close to the original engine. When it names a modern port or a compatibility level, treat that as a requirement rather than a suggestion. A visually advanced port may add features, but those additions can alter physics, rendering or scripting behavior that a strict vanilla project depends on.
Step-by-step: a reliable first setup
- Identify the WAD’s target. Read its documentation before installing anything. Note the required IWAD (for example, Doom, Doom II, TNT or Plutonia), named port and any compatibility-level setting.
- Choose the engine. Select Chocolate Doom when the stated goal is close reproduction of original DOS behavior. Select a feature-rich port only when its capabilities are required or explicitly supported by the modification.
- Obtain the base data. Use the IWAD from a legitimate installation of the relevant game, or use the Freedoom data path when the modification supports it. Keep the filename and contents consistent with the instructions.
- Make the IWAD visible to the port. Place the IWAD where the port searches for game files, or select it in the launcher. With a command-line port, an explicit form is
port -iwad doom2.wad. Freedoom’s manual gives the analogous example-iwad freedoom1.wad. - Load the PWAD using the supported method. For a conventional add-on, append
-file mymod.wad, as inport -iwad doom2.wad -file mymod.wad. If the readme specifies a merge, an alternate executable or a special launcher, use that procedure instead. - Apply any compatibility setting. Some ports expose a
-compleveloption that selects historical engine behavior. Use the value named by the WAD’s documentation; the option and its available values are port-specific. - Test the intended content. Confirm that the expected title, episode, map set or menu appears. If the port opens the base game’s campaign instead, the PWAD may not have loaded, may require a different startup method or may target another IWAD.
Why a WAD may fail in Chocolate Doom or another port
Troubleshoot from the foundation upward. Changing visual settings before verifying the data and target often obscures the real problem.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The port reports that no IWAD was found | The base file is absent, misplaced or not one the port recognizes | Verify the file exists, use a conventional filename where appropriate, select it explicitly with -iwad, and confirm it is the edition named by the WAD’s instructions. |
| The port starts, but the custom maps are missing | The PWAD was not loaded or was loaded with the wrong option | Check the launch command, confirm the file path and use the port’s documented additional-file method such as -file. |
| The game loads but looks or behaves incorrectly | The modification targets a different port or compatibility level | Read the target specification, switch to the named port and apply the requested -complevel or equivalent setting. |
| A total conversion fails when appended normally | It requires a merge or special startup procedure | Follow the conversion’s readme and the port documentation; do not assume every PWAD is an ordinary add-on. |
| A modern mod refuses to run in Chocolate Doom | It uses features outside Chocolate Doom’s historical-accuracy target | Use the feature-rich port named by the mod, provided that port is compatible with the required IWAD. |
| A demo or vanilla project desynchronizes | Engine behavior differs from the environment for which it was recorded | Use the specified historical port and compatibility level rather than a port with undocumented enhancements. |
Check the base IWAD first
A PWAD can appear to be broken when the real issue is an incorrect IWAD. Confirm both the game family and the edition. A Doom II map set cannot be made equivalent to a TNT or Plutonia installation simply by changing a command-line name.

Check the loading method third
Some launchers distinguish between selecting an IWAD and adding files. Putting both in a generic “files” box can produce the wrong load order. Use the dedicated IWAD selector or -iwad, then add the PWAD with the documented option.
Historical fidelity versus modern features
Chocolate Doom’s defining trade-off is deliberate restraint. Reproducing original DOS behavior, including known bugs, can be essential for a project designed around vanilla physics, timing or demo playback. The same restraint means it may not provide the scripting, rendering or extended mod capabilities expected by a modern conversion.
A feature-rich port takes the opposite approach: it may offer hardware rendering and a broader modification feature set, as described in the Freedoom manual’s discussion of GZDoom. Those capabilities can make demanding projects practical, but they are not proof of compatibility with a WAD designed for the original engine. Enhanced rendering and gameplay extensions can change how a level behaves even when the map file opens successfully.

Compatibility is therefore a target, not a quality ranking. “More features” is useful only when the WAD was built for those features; “more faithful” is useful only when the project values original behavior.
Freedoom as an alternative data path
Freedoom separates the engine question from the licensing of the base game data by providing freely licensed IWAD-style content. Its documentation explains that the files can sit beside a source port or be selected explicitly, for example with -iwad freedoom1.wad. This makes it possible to test a port without supplying a commercial IWAD.
Freedoom is still game data, not a source port. You must install a compatible engine, and a PWAD must support the Freedoom data you select. A modification that expects resources from a particular commercial IWAD may show missing textures, fail to start or play differently with Freedoom. Treat Freedoom as an alternative base-game path, not as a universal substitute.
A practical decision framework
Use Chocolate Doom when fidelity is the requirement
- The WAD describes itself as vanilla-compatible or targets original DOS behavior.
- You are checking behavior, timing or demos against the classic engine.
- You accept that modern rendering and scripting features may be unavailable.
Use a feature-rich port when the project asks for it
- The readme names a modern port or requires extended mod features.
- The project depends on hardware rendering, scripting or other capabilities beyond the original engine.
- You have selected the IWAD and version specified by the author.
Stop and resolve the requirement when the documentation conflicts
- Do not substitute a different IWAD merely because it is already installed.
- Do not force a total conversion through the ordinary
-fileoption when its instructions require a merge. - Do not treat a successful launch as proof of correct compatibility; verify the expected maps, behavior and port target.
Key terms to remember
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| WAD | A container holding Doom game data. |
| IWAD | The base game’s data file used to establish the core game. |
| PWAD | An additional or modifying WAD generally loaded alongside an IWAD. |
| Source port | An engine program that runs Doom data on modern systems. |
| Compatibility level | A port-specific setting that selects historical engine behavior; -complevel is one documented form. |
| Total conversion | A large-scale modification that may require a special launch or merge procedure rather than ordinary PWAD loading. |
The reliable mental model is simple: the IWAD supplies the foundation, the PWAD changes or extends it, and the source port runs both. When those three pieces agree on the game family, loading method and compatibility target, classic Doom content is usually straightforward to start. When they do not, changing the port or command at random is less effective than returning to the WAD’s stated requirements.
