Choose a War Dog by the job you need it to do: the Brigand is the ranged-pressure option, the Karnivore is built around close combat, and the Stalker trades some specialization for a mix of shooting and melee. None is automatically the best choice for every Chaos Knights army. The right pick depends on what targets your list needs to threaten, whether it can put the model in position, and the rules and points in effect for your game.
What are the main War Dog loadout choices?
In this guide, “War Dogs” means the Chaos Knights units in Warhammer 40,000—not dogs in a video game or a generic vehicle category. The three variants to consider for role-based loadout decisions are the Brigand, Karnivore, and Stalker. Their weapon options point toward different battlefield jobs: ranged pressure, melee threat, or a flexible blend.

That distinction is more useful than looking for a universal winner. A weapon profile matters only if the unit can bring it to bear on a worthwhile target. A melee-focused model may be a poor fit if your army cannot create opportunities to charge; a ranged build may not solve a list’s need to contest space at close quarters. Think of the datasheet as a set of tools, then choose the tool that fills a gap in your force.
- Brigand: a ranged attacker with an avenger chaincannon and daemonbreath spear.
- Karnivore: a close-combat specialist with a reaper chaintalon and slaughterclaw.
- Stalker: a configurable option that can exchange one melee weapon for a chaincannon or daemonbreath spear.
Exact weapon profiles and options are version-sensitive. The official datasheet PDF consulted for these details is labelled December 2024. Check the current Chaos Knights codex, datasheets, and official FAQ or errata before using a profile to make a list or declare a game.

Which War Dog is best for ranged pressure?
Brigand: chaincannon and daemonbreath spear
The Brigand is the clearest choice when the job is to apply ranged pressure. Its listed armament includes an avenger chaincannon with a 24-inch range and 12 attacks, and a daemonbreath spear with a 24-inch range, two attacks, and Melta 4. It also has a diabolus heavy stubber and armoured feet. Those values describe the December 2024 datasheet consulted here; verify the live profile before relying on them.
The two main guns give the Brigand different kinds of ranged threat. The chaincannon’s 12 attacks make it the higher-volume profile in the cited datasheet, while the spear has the Melta 4 rule and is framed as a weapon for damaging tougher targets. That contrast can help when deciding which targets the model should seek, but the weapon names or attack counts alone do not guarantee a particular amount of damage. Range, line of sight, target characteristics, current rules, and dice all matter.
Use its ability as a target-selection incentive
The Brigand’s ability improves the AP characteristic of ranged attacks against the closest eligible enemy unit. This rewards attention to target position: before choosing a target, check which enemy unit qualifies as closest under the current rules and whether the Brigand has a useful shot. Do not read the ability as a requirement to shoot the closest enemy in every situation, or as proof that the model will outperform another variant in a particular matchup.

If the model is screened, blocked, or forced to spend its turn moving without a useful target, its weapon package cannot do the work the list needs.

Which War Dog is best for melee?
Karnivore: chaintalon and slaughterclaw
The Karnivore is the melee-focused choice. Warhammer Community describes it as a “dedicated melee monster,” with a reaper chaintalon for clearing lesser targets and a slaughterclaw for harder ones. Its datasheet includes strike and sweep profiles for the chaintalon, a slaughterclaw profile, and an ability to re-roll charge rolls. Those features support a close-combat role rather than a ranged-first one.
The strike and sweep profiles give the chaintalon different ways to engage a target, while the slaughterclaw supplies another melee option. Use the live datasheet for the current characteristics and rules: the role description does not tell you the exact outcome against a particular enemy. A re-roll on a charge roll can help with the attempt to reach combat, but it is not the same as a guarantee that the Karnivore will make the charge or survive what follows.
Plan for the approach, not just the fight
A melee weapon is useful only when the model can get to a suitable target. When considering a Karnivore, assess its route across the battlefield, the enemy units that could screen or obstruct it, and whether the mission gives it a worthwhile task once it arrives. A threat that cannot reach combat at the right time may exert pressure, but it should not be treated as if it has already made contact.
Before committing it, ask whether the target is worth the approach and whether your army needs the Karnivore to fight, occupy space, or support another unit’s plan. The available evidence establishes its melee-oriented weapons and charge re-roll; it does not establish a universal target priority, damage result, or competitive ranking. Those depend on the army, opponent, battlefield, and current rules.

When should you build a Stalker?
A flexible trade-off, not a guaranteed best of both worlds
The Stalker is the middle-ground option. Warhammer Community describes it as able to trade one melee weapon for an avenger chaincannon or daemonbreath spear. That lets the player keep a melee component while adding one of those ranged weapons, according to the documented options. The October 2024 indexed datasheet consulted for this point lists those ranged weapons alongside melee options; check the current codex and datasheet for exact build legality.
Choose a Stalker when you want a model with a mixed threat profile or when the flexibility fits the rest of your force better than a specialist. The trade-off is real: exchanging a melee weapon changes what the model can do in combat. Do not assume that a Stalker retains every capability of a Brigand and a Karnivore simultaneously. It is a distinct configuration with an opportunity cost, not a proven best-of-both-worlds unit.
The choice between the chaincannon and spear should follow the role you want the ranged weapon to serve. The cited official description characterizes the chaincannon as delivering 12 shots against infantry and the spear as a tank-melting option, but that is editorial description rather than a guarantee of tabletop performance. Consult the current profiles and the rest of the list before choosing.

|---|---|---|---|
| Brigand | Ranged pressure | Avenger chaincannon (24-inch range, 12 attacks) and daemonbreath spear (24-inch range, two attacks, Melta 4) on the December 2024 datasheet; ranged attacks gain improved AP against the closest eligible enemy unit. | Can it see and reach a useful target, and does target positioning make its ability relevant? |
| Karnivore | Close-combat threat | Reaper chaintalon with strike and sweep profiles, slaughterclaw, and charge-roll re-roll on the consulted datasheet. | Can it reach a suitable target, and is committing it to that fight worthwhile for the mission? |
| Stalker | Mixed threat | Can trade one melee weapon for an avenger chaincannon or daemonbreath spear, according to Warhammer Community and the October 2024 indexed datasheet. | Which capability are you giving up, and does the remaining mix serve a job your list needs? |

How to choose a loadout for your army
- Identify the list’s missing job. If you need a War Dog to contribute primarily at range, begin with the Brigand. If you need a dedicated melee threat, consider the Karnivore. If you want a mix and are willing to exchange one melee weapon for a ranged option, consider the Stalker.
- Name the targets and conditions the model must handle. For the Brigand, consider whether it can bring its guns to bear and make use of its closest-target AP benefit. For the Karnivore, consider whether a suitable target can be reached. For the Stalker, decide which ranged option complements the melee weapon you retain.
- Check the plan for position and timing. A ranged weapon still needs a legal target and line of sight; a melee loadout needs a route and an opportunity to charge. Consider what the model is expected to do if its preferred target is unavailable.
- Review the complete army context. Check your detachment, the rest of your unit choices, mission needs, and the current rules. A model that duplicates a role already covered may be less useful to your list than one that fills a gap.
- Confirm the current points and datasheet before finalizing. Do not treat an older points manual or profile as current. The official downloads hub identifies FAQs as the place for up-to-date errata and answers; consult it alongside the current codex and points document.
This process avoids a common list-building trap: selecting a weapon because it sounds powerful, then discovering that the model’s intended target, position, or rules interaction rarely comes up in your games. Start with the job; use the profile to confirm that the option can perform it.
What does Houndpack Lance change?
Houndpack Lance is an all-War-Dog-oriented detachment described in a 2025 Warhammer Community announcement. The announcement says it requires three or more War Dog units, gives War Dog units Battleline, and allows three units to gain Character. Its Marked Prey rule selects an enemy unit at the start of the Command phase; War Dog attacks against that selected unit gain Sustained Hits 1 when it is visible to the attacking model.
Those rules can make a force built around War Dogs operate differently from a list using another detachment, so include the detachment in the loadout decision rather than treating every unit choice in isolation. Marked Prey depends on the selected enemy and visibility to the attacking model, so it does not mean every War Dog attack always benefits. Because the cited outline is from 2025, check the current printed or digital codex and official errata for the live wording, unit-count requirement, and army-building details before relying on it.

The March 2025 Munitorum Field Manual listed the War Dog Brigand at 165 points and the Karnivore and Stalker at 140 points each. These are dated values from that manual, not confirmed current costs. Do not use them as a present-day comparison without checking a newer points document. A points change can alter how attractive a role is in a list even when a unit’s basic battlefield identity remains recognizable.

Building a War Dog kit around your choice
The official preview for the Houndpack Lance battleforce says it contains seven plastic War Dogs with parts to build them as Stalkers, Karnivores, or Brigands. That establishes documented build options for that battleforce, but not what is in stock, what any current listing includes, or its price. If you are choosing a Chaos Knights War Dog kit, inspect the specific listing and confirm that it includes the parts for the variant and weapon configuration you intend to build.
Decide on the model’s intended role before assembling it, especially if your chosen weapon combination depends on parts that are not interchangeable in your collection. For a flexible collection, check the kit contents and assembly instructions rather than assuming that one purchase provides every possible configuration. The official preview documents the three variant choices in the battleforce; it does not establish every kit’s contents.
