To control a child’s GameChat access on Nintendo Switch 2, first link the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to the console, then set friend approvals and video permissions for the child’s supervised account in the app. To start a chat with the microphone muted, use the separate “Mute Microphone When Entering a Chat Session” setting in the console’s C Menu. These controls are in different places, and parental controls do not let parents hear or read GameChat conversations.
Before you set up GameChat controls
GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2 supports voice chat, video chat, screen sharing and playing together. Nintendo says GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a persistent internet connection. A compatible USB camera is needed for video chat, but not for voice chat, screen sharing, or setting parental controls. Nintendo names the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera as one compatible example; it is sold separately. See Nintendo’s GameChat setup guide and approved-friend guide.

For users under 16, Nintendo requires parental controls to be set up through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app before they can use GameChat. The parent or guardian needs a phone number registered to their Nintendo Account, the app installed on a smart device, and access to the appropriate account. Nintendo’s GameChat parental-controls guide also covers supervised accounts and family-group setup.
It helps to separate the requirement to configure controls from the individual permissions you will choose afterward. Linking the app establishes the parent or guardian’s ability to manage the supervised child’s settings; it does not itself decide which friends can chat or whether video is allowed. Those are separate decisions made in the app for each supervised child user. Likewise, a Nintendo Switch Online membership and internet connection are service requirements, while the camera is only needed for the optional video-chat feature.

If you manage more than one child, check which supervised user is selected before changing a setting. Friend approvals and video permission are set for a particular child account, so one child’s configuration should not be assumed to apply to another. Nintendo’s general Switch 2 parental-controls instructions also distinguish settings configured on the console from controls that require the app or Nintendo Account settings.
Link the parental-controls app to Switch 2
-
On the parent or guardian’s smart device, install and open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, then sign in to the Nintendo Account that will manage the child’s settings. Make sure a phone number is registered to that parent’s account; Nintendo lists this as a prerequisite for setting GameChat parental controls.
-
In the app, generate a link code. Keep it available while you move to the console.

On Switch 2, open System Settings > Parental Controls, choose the option to set up or link the app, and enter the code displayed in the app.
-
If parental controls were originally configured directly on the console rather than through the app, Nintendo directs you to choose Change Settings and then complete setup through the app. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish linking.
Nintendo’s general Switch 2 parental-controls guide distinguishes settings available on the console from features that need the app or Nintendo Account settings. Linking the app is essential for the child-specific GameChat controls described below.
The account relationship matters as well as the link code. Nintendo’s parent and guardian guidance describes family-group and supervised-account steps, so make sure the child is managed as a supervised user under the appropriate family setup before expecting the GameChat section to show that child’s settings. The parent or guardian must use the Nintendo Account associated with the management role and registered phone number; using another account or selecting a different user can lead to managing the wrong settings or not seeing the intended child profile.

-
When granting approval, record a note identifying the friend and why approval was given. A brief, recognizable note can help a parent or guardian understand the decision later.
-
To revoke permission, return to that child’s GameChat friend list, select the friend, and withdraw GameChat permission.

Nintendo says children under 16 and supervised users cannot use GameChat with friends who have not been approved. If no friends are approved, the child cannot invite others to a GameChat room or receive room invitations. Invitations also require reciprocal approval: both players must approve each other. Approving a friend on one child’s account therefore does not, by itself, guarantee that an invitation will work. See Nintendo’s approved-friend instructions.
Think of approval as a two-sided check rather than a single parent-controlled switch for both players. You can approve a person for your child, but the other player must also have approved your child for an invitation to work. If an invitation fails, check both directions instead of repeatedly sending it or assuming that the child’s approval did not save. The rule applies to invitations even where a child already appears to have the other person as a friend.
The app’s note field is useful for keeping the decision understandable later, particularly when multiple adults help manage the child’s account or when the friend list changes over time. It is a record of why approval was granted, not a chat transcript or a monitoring feature. If permission is no longer appropriate, select that friend and withdraw GameChat permission; approvals are not irreversible.
Allow or disable video chat
In the app’s GameChat settings for the supervised child, choose how camera permission is handled. Nintendo documents two choices: allow a request for each video-chat session, or disallow video chat. The session-by-session option means the parent receives a new request for each session; it is not a one-time blanket approval. Permission can also be withdrawn during a session.

Disallow video chat: The child cannot use the camera for GameChat video chat under this setting. This is the direct option if you want to turn off video chat.
Video chat also requires a compatible USB camera connected to the console. Nintendo gives the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera as an example of compatible hardware and says it is sold separately. A camera is not required for voice chat, screen sharing, or use of the parental-controls app. Nintendo’s GameChat parental-controls guide and setup guide describe the permission and camera requirements.
The camera is an optional accessory for the video feature, not a prerequisite for setting up GameChat or using voice chat. Buying one does not change the child’s friend approvals or parental permission choice: the app settings still govern whether video is allowed or requires a request. Conversely, disallowing camera use should not be treated as disabling all GameChat, because voice and screen sharing are separate features.
Limit the camera framing
The app lets a parent constrain camera framing to face only, no background, or no filter. The child can choose only among the options the parent permits. These settings limit the available framing choices; they are separate from the broader decision to allow or disallow video chat. If you do not want video at all, change the video permission rather than relying on framing restrictions.
In practical terms, framing permissions determine which camera presentation choices are available to the child; they are not a substitute for the session permission setting. A child allowed to use video may still be limited to the parent-permitted framing options. If the goal is to require an adult decision for each video session, choose the request-each-time option. If the goal is to prevent camera video, disallow video chat rather than selecting a framing limit.
Camera permission applies to video, not all GameChat features: Nintendo says screen sharing is not restricted by the video-camera permission setting. Disallowing camera use should therefore not be described as disabling screen sharing.
Set GameChat to join with the microphone muted
The microphone-on-entry preference is set from the console’s C Menu, not from the child’s friend-approval screen in the app. Nintendo’s C Menu settings guide gives these steps:

Select the user, then open Settings.

Enable Mute Microphone When Entering a Chat Session.
With the setting enabled, the microphone is muted when the user enters a GameChat room, and the user must unmute after joining to speak. It changes the microphone state on entry; it does not prevent the user from joining a chat or replace the app’s controls over which friends a supervised child can chat with.
This is a useful default when the user wants to decide whether to speak after seeing that they have joined a session. It is not the same as disabling voice chat, blocking a person, or removing the child’s ability to join a room. If the user joins and cannot be heard, check whether this preference is enabled and unmute in the session; if the desired behavior is to enter future rooms with the microphone on, return to the same setting and turn it off.

The C Menu also includes settings to adjust game volume automatically while other people talk and to configure Chat Audio Panning. Those are audio-mix preferences, not friend approvals or camera permissions. Nintendo notes that parents may need to be involved in some settings for users under 16.
Know what each control can and cannot manage
Privacy settings are spread across the console, the parental-controls app and Nintendo Account settings. Use the control surface that matches the decision you are making:
| Where | Relevant controls | What they govern |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 console settings | Parental-control setup on console; C Menu microphone-on-entry and audio preferences | Console configuration and how the user enters a chat, including whether the microphone starts muted. |
| Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app | Supervised child’s GameChat friend approvals, video permission, camera framing choices and activity information | Which friends a supervised child may GameChat with, whether video is permitted, and selected usage restrictions and activity details. |
| Nintendo Account settings | eShop viewing and purchases, friend suggestions, and third-party information sharing | Account-level settings outside the child-specific GameChat controls described here. |
This distinction matters if a setting is missing or does not do what you expect. For example, the C Menu’s microphone option cannot approve a friend, and the app’s video permission does not govern screen sharing. Nintendo outlines the broader separation in its Switch 2 parental-controls guide.
Use the console’s system settings for console-level parental-control setup and the C Menu for the user’s chat-entry audio behavior. Use the app when making a decision about a supervised child’s GameChat access, camera permission, or usage information. Nintendo Account settings cover other account-level matters such as eShop viewing and purchases, friend suggestions, and third-party information sharing. These are related privacy choices, but they do not replace the GameChat-specific controls.
That separation also helps avoid overestimating what any one setting does. Muting the microphone on entry does not filter the friend list. Disallowing video does not turn off screen sharing. Reviewing activity does not provide access to what participants said. If a family wants to control several aspects of use, check each relevant menu rather than expecting one privacy toggle to cover all of them.

Review GameChat activity without confusing it with conversation monitoring
The parental-controls app can show selected GameChat activity for a child: whether GameChat was used, when a session started and how long it lasted, whether the camera was used, and which friends were involved. Nintendo states that parents do not have access to the actual conversations. Treat the app as a way to review usage and chat partners, not as a tool for listening to voice chat or reading conversation content. Details are in Nintendo’s GameChat parental-controls guide.
This makes the activity view useful for checking broad patterns and identifying which approved friends took part, while preserving an important boundary: it reports selected activity details, not the substance of the conversation. The listed information includes use, session start time and length, camera use, and participants. It should not be described as live listening, message access, or a recording of the session.
If a child cannot use GameChat or an invitation fails
-
The child cannot start GameChat: Check the under-16 requirement first: parental controls must be configured through the app. Confirm the app is linked to the console and that the parent’s Nintendo Account has a registered phone number. Also check the stated service requirements: a Nintendo Switch Online membership and persistent internet connection.

The child cannot invite someone or accept an invitation: Verify that the child has approved the friend and that the other player has approved the child. Nintendo requires approval in both directions for invitations to work. If the child has no approved friends, room invitations cannot be sent or received.
-
Video is unavailable: Check whether the parent set video permission to disallow video or whether a request for that session still needs approval. Confirm that a compatible USB camera is connected. A camera is not needed for voice chat or screen sharing.
-
The microphone is muted after joining: If the user needs to speak, unmute after entering the room. To change future joins, open the C Menu, choose the user and Settings, and turn off “Mute Microphone When Entering a Chat Session.”
These checks correspond to Nintendo’s published eligibility, approval and feature requirements; menu labels and availability can change, so consult Nintendo’s current GameChat setup instructions if the console or app presents different options.

How do I set parental controls for GameChat on Switch 2?
For a user under 16, set up Nintendo Switch Parental Controls through the smart-device app before using GameChat. The parent or guardian needs the app, the appropriate Nintendo Account with a registered phone number, and a linked console. Generate a link code in the app, then enter it on Switch 2 under System Settings > Parental Controls. After linking, open GameChat in the app and select the supervised child to manage friend approvals and video permission.
How do I approve friends for my child’s GameChat?
In the linked app, open GameChat and select the supervised child. Review friend requests with the child, approve the people permitted to chat, and record a note identifying the friend and the reason for approval. Both players must approve each other for GameChat invitations to work; if no friends are approved, the child cannot send or receive room invitations.
Can I turn off video chat on my child’s Switch 2?
Yes. In the child’s GameChat settings in the Parental Controls app, disallow video chat. Alternatively, choose to require a parent’s permission request for each new video-chat session. A compatible USB camera is required for video, but the camera permission setting does not restrict screen sharing.
Can I make a child’s camera show only their face?
The app lets a parent constrain the available camera framing choices, including face only, no background, or no filter. The child can select only from options the parent permits. These framing limits do not replace the broader choice to allow video, require a request each session, or disallow video.
How do I mute my microphone when joining GameChat?
Open the C Menu with the C Button, or open the GameChat icon from the HOME Menu. Select the user, open Settings, and enable “Mute Microphone When Entering a Chat Session.” The user will need to unmute after joining to speak.
Can parents hear or read their child’s GameChat conversations?
No. Nintendo says parents can see selected activity information, including whether GameChat was used, session start time and length, camera use, and the friends involved. The app does not give parents access to the actual conversations.
Does turning off video also turn off voice chat or screen sharing?
No. The video permission setting controls camera video. Nintendo says screen sharing is not restricted by video-camera permission, and a compatible camera is not needed for voice chat or screen sharing.
The Bottom Line
For a child under 16, link the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app before using GameChat, then manage friend approvals and video permission for the correct supervised account. Use the C Menu separately to make chats start with the microphone muted. Nintendo’s app provides selected activity details, not access to the conversation itself.
