Look for Wardenflies in Deep Docks, Bilewater, Greymoor, and the upper areas of the Slab. The caged regional encounters require Cling Grip and defeating Bell Beast; Greymoor also requires the SEARCH: Silent Halls objective and defeating Moorwing. Defeat eight Wardenflies to complete their Hunter’s Journal entry. If a cage captures Hornet, it takes her to the Slab jail and temporarily removes access to non-movement items and Tools.
Where to find Wardenflies
Wardenflies appear in the overworld regions of Deep Docks, Bilewater, and Greymoor, as well as in the upper areas of the Slab. The regional overworld encounters are associated with cages and depend on progression conditions; the Slab also provides Wardenflies for Journal hunting.
How to make caged Wardenflies spawn
General requirements
For the caged overworld Wardenflies, acquire Cling Grip and defeat Bell Beast. They do not spawn before Bell Beast is defeated. Their availability can also be suppressed after interacting with Fayforn or completing the arena that returns Hornet’s belongings. These encounters are one-time: a defeated cage-bearing Wardenfly does not respawn. The Hollow Knight Wiki’s Wardenfly entry, last edited September 12, 2026, documents these conditions.
Additional Greymoor requirements
In Greymoor, also complete the SEARCH: Silent Halls objective and defeat Moorwing. If the Greymoor cage encounter is missing, check these requirements along with the general progression gates.

What happens when a cage catches Hornet?
A successful capture transports Hornet to the Slab’s jail. She temporarily loses access to non-movement items and Tools until she recovers them. If Hornet is cursed, the capture fails and vines kill the Wardenfly instead. Choose whether to risk the capture based on whether you want to enter the Slab through this encounter and whether you are prepared to continue without those tools and items for a time.
How to defeat Wardenflies
Wardenflies can spit globs that immobilize Hornet, slam their bodies down, and perform a two-step lunge. The wiki recommends dashing away from the body slam. Watch for the pause between the two lunges: the follow-up can catch you if you move back in too soon. The Hollow Knight Wiki describes these attacks and avoidance advice.

How many Wardenflies count toward the Hunter’s Journal?
Defeat eight Wardenflies for the Hunter’s Journal entry. The Hollow Knight Wiki and the Silksong Wiki database both give eight as the requirement. A Nerd’s Chalk guide published September 12, 2025 says ten, but that figure conflicts with those current references and should not be used as the target.
