Games Workshop has announced Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition, and its launch product is the Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon boxed set. The reveal was shown at the AdeptiCon Preview on 26 March 2026 with a cinematic trailer that frames the story around Blood Angels fighting Orks on Armageddon. The trailer’s framing is not the box’s contents, though. The launch set is built around Space Marines and Orks in general, and the Space Marine models shown in the trailer do not carry Chapter-specific markings.
What the announcement shows
The reveal, published by Games Workshop on 26 March 2026, sets the new edition on Armageddon at a point of crisis. Ork forces have arrived, with Wazdakka Gutsmek’s vanguard already on the planet and Ghazghkull’s main force approaching. Commissar Yarrick sends out a plea for help, and the response is Operation Imperator, a coalition of Space Marine Chapters. Blood Angels have a documented history of defending Armageddon, so they return in the story alongside Salamanders, Ultramarines, Space Wolves and others.

That is the narrative the trailer leans on. For the purposes of buying or playing, the more important point is that the reveal also introduces the edition itself and names Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon as its launch boxed set. Games Workshop calls it the biggest Warhammer 40,000 launch set yet and says it contains new Space Marine and Ork miniatures, rules and lore. “Biggest” is the publisher’s own promotional description, not a measured figure.
What is in the Armageddon launch set
The current official Warhammer 40,000 edition page, accessed on 8 October 2026, lists the contents of the Armageddon box. The Space Marine and Ork models are listed as follows.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes 23 Space Marines: 1 Captain with Relic Shield, 1 Librarian, 1 Chaplain with Jump Pack, 1 Ancient, 10 Intercessors, 5 Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs, 3 Eradicators with Heavy Bolters, and 1 Land Speeder
- Also included are 38 Orks: 20 Ork Boyz, 10 Gretchin, 1 Warboss, 1 Bannernob, 1 Bigboss, 1 Painboy with 1 Grot Orderly, 1 Weirdboy, 1 Wartrakk, 1 Big Mek Dakkarig
- One 114 page hardcover Armageddon: Operation Imperator book, 88 Page Core rules booklet, Chapter Approved 2026-27: Mission Deck 88 cards, 89 Cards Dominatus Narrative Campaign Deck,
- 17 Armageddon datasheet cards. Armageddon Transfer Sheet: 728 high-quality waterslide transfers to decorate your miniatures.
- These miniatures are unpainted and need to be assembled. We recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Paints.
| Force | Models listed on the official edition page |
|---|---|
| Space Marines | Captain with Relic Shield; Chaplain with Jump Pack; Librarian; Ancient; 10 Intercessors; 5 Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs; 3 Eradicators with Heavy Bolters; Land Speeder |
| Orks | Warboss; Bigboss; Bannernob; Painboy and Grot Orderly; Weirdboy; 20 Boyz; 10 Gretchin; Wartrakk; Big Mek Dakkarig |
The game materials listed on the same page are:
- The Operation Imperator book
- The Core Rules
- The Chapter Approved Mission Deck
- The Dominatus Campaign Deck
- 17 datasheet cards
- A transfer sheet
The list does not name a Chapter for the Space Marine models, which is consistent with the official statement that the Intercessors shown in the trailer have no Chapter-specific markings. A Blood Angels player can paint them that way, but the box does not make them Blood Angels.
What Games Workshop says changes in 11th Edition
In its 26 March 2026 Q&A, Games Workshop describes a unified-experience goal. Rather than separating matched play, narrative play and open play into distinct modes, the company says it wants every game to feel narrative, balanced and exciting. These are the publisher’s stated aims. They are not independent assessments of balance or game quality, and the edition has not been tested by outside reviewers in the material reviewed here.
Rank #2
- Games Workshop - Warhammer 40,000 - Space Marines: Primaris Intercessors
Specific changes the publisher lists:
- Existing codexes stay usable. Most datasheets work as they do today.
- Detachments are updated and new ones added, with more than 70 at launch, according to the publisher’s own count.
- Characters keep their best abilities after their bodyguard unit is destroyed.
- Objectives change. Circular objective markers are replaced by battlefield features such as bunkers, ruins and relics.
Can I keep using my current codex?
Games Workshop’s Q&A states: “You’ll still be able to use your current codex in the new edition.” The sentence appears on the Warhammer Community page dated 26 March 2026 and is attributed to the publication as a whole, not to a named individual. Read it as a statement that existing codexes remain usable, not as a guarantee that every rule in an older book will work unchanged. The publisher’s own wording is that most datasheets work as they do today, and the difference matters if you are relying on a specific rule.
Codex: Orks is the first new-edition codex
Games Workshop’s 26 June 2026 preview identifies Codex: Orks as the first codex for the new edition. According to that preview, the book contains faction rules, 15 detachments, painting tips, art and lore, and a collecting section. It also includes a code that unlocks the book’s rules content in the Warhammer 40,000 app. The same preview announced new Ork miniatures and dice.

Before you buy, it helps to settle a few practical questions:
Quick Recap
- Faction preference: the box is split between Space Marines and Orks, so decide which army you want to field first.
- Rules and campaign materials: the Core Rules, mission and campaign decks, and the Operation Imperator book are the main game content in the box.
- Chapter choice: if you want Blood Angels, you will be painting the Space Marine models yourself, since the box does not name a Chapter.
- Extra purchases: the Orks codex is a separate book, and paint and assembly tools are optional extras for anyone building and painting the miniatures.
