Yes. Overwatch 1 put six players on each team. That was the game’s original team size. What is often misremembered is the role makeup: six players did not automatically mean a 2-2-2 lineup in the original game. The 2-2-2 split came later, with Role Queue.
What “6v6” meant in Overwatch 1
“6v6” means six players on each side of a match. Blizzard’s game director, Aaron Keller, described the original format in a developer post titled Director’s Take: Opening up the conversation on 5v5 and 6v6: “The game started its life with six players on each team.” Blizzard also described the original Overwatch 1.0 release as classic 6v6 team-based action.
Six players did not always mean 2-2-2
Before Role Queue, Overwatch 1 had no enforced role split. Players could pick heroes without the game requiring two Tanks, two Damage heroes and two Support heroes on each team. Blizzard puts it directly in the same developer post: “Before Role Queue, there was no enforced 2-2-2 team composition.”
Role Queue later limited each team to two heroes from each role. From that point on, “2-2-2” describes the Role Queue structure, not the original rule. If you remember Overwatch 1 as always having two Tanks, two Damage and two Support on every team, you are remembering the Role Queue era.

How Overwatch 2 changed the player count
Overwatch 2 replaced the six-player format. Blizzard’s announcement put it plainly: “The core Overwatch PvP experience will shift from six players per team to five players per team.” Standard role-queued modes use one Tank, two Damage and two Support heroes, which is a 1-2-2 composition.
| Format | Players per team | Role rule |
|---|---|---|
| Overwatch 1, before Role Queue | 6 | No enforced role split |
| Overwatch 1, with Role Queue | 6 | Two Tank, two Damage, two Support (2-2-2) |
| Overwatch 2, standard Role Queue | 5 | One Tank, two Damage, two Support (1-2-2) |
Blizzard’s official game page describes the current game as 5v5. That describes the standard format. Individual limited modes and events can use different team sizes or role limits, so check the mode’s own rules before assuming the standard applies.

Later 6v6 modes in Overwatch 2 are tests, not a return to the original
Blizzard has run limited 6v6 experiments inside Overwatch 2. These are separate from the original game’s format, and they do not change the historical answer above. Both were announced as tests in Overwatch 2.
2-2-2 Role Queue experiment
This test brought back the 2-2-2 role split with six players on each team inside Overwatch 2. It was an experiment in the newer game, not a restoration of Overwatch 1.

Min 1, Max 3 mode
This mode allowed one to three heroes from each role rather than a fixed split. It was also a limited Overwatch 2 test with six-player teams, and it is a different rule set from the original game.

Blizzard describes Overwatch: Classic as a recreation of the original 1.0 release from May 2016, with classic 6v6 gameplay. It is the closest official way to play the six-player format today. Its availability depends on Blizzard’s event schedule, so confirm it on Blizzard’s official Overwatch channels before planning around it.
