Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Review — A Rich RPG with a Steep Learning Curve

Rogue Trader delivers a rich, choice-driven Warhammer 40,000 CRPG, but its intricate rules and battles that can drag make it best suited to players who enjoy complexity.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is worth considering if you want a sprawling, choice-driven CRPG steeped in 40K lore and enjoy planning party builds. Its atmosphere, writing and character-building depth are major draws; its dense rules and potentially long tactical battles can make it a demanding fit, especially for newcomers. The review evidence spans a 2023 PC review and a single writer’s 2026 return after DLC—not a fresh, systematic assessment of every platform.

What kind of game is Rogue Trader?

Owlcat Games sets the adventure in the Koronus Expanse, a dangerous, little-charted region of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. You inherit the title and responsibilities of a Rogue Trader, travel between worlds aboard a voidship, and make decisions amid competing Imperial interests and encounters with xenos. The official description emphasizes exploration, companions, weapons, abilities and tactical positioning; an Owlcat-authored Xbox Wire overview also highlights recruiting a retinue, reclaiming worlds and shaping the sector through your choices.

Olga Novikova, Community Manager at Owlcat Games, describes it as “a story-rich classical RPG from Owlcat Games” made in close partnership with Games Workshop, in her Xbox Wire article. That publisher-side description fits the game’s focus: this is a substantial party RPG, not an action game with a light layer of role-playing.

What do the reviews say?

PC Gamer’s 2023 launch review

Jody Macgregor awarded the game 59/100 in a PC Gamer review published December 6, 2023. The verdict praises the atmosphere and writing, but criticizes bugs, encounter design and rules complexity. PC Gamer reported testing the Windows version on Windows 11 with a Ryzen 9 5900X, 32 GB of RAM and an RTX 3080. That score and setup describe one PC review at launch; they do not establish console performance.

PC Gamer’s 2026 return

In an August 2, 2026 feature, Ted Litchfield revisited the game after the Infinite Museion DLC. He praised its character-building and said it had become one of his favorite RPGs, while also describing its dense systems and build choices as daunting enough to warrant guides. This is one writer’s later play experience, not a new review score or a controlled comparison with the launch version.

Together, these accounts point to a game whose appeal depends heavily on how much you enjoy its systems: its depth can be a strength if you like experimenting with builds, but the same intricacy can become friction rather than fun.

How does combat feel?

Combat is turn-based and built around a party. Macgregor describes battles involving the player character and five companions, with action points, abilities, buffs and debuffs interacting across a fight. He found the tactical and character systems flavorful in places, but criticized the accumulation of effects and percentile bonuses as overcomplicated. Those are the observations of the 2023 PC review, not a universal verdict on every player’s experience.

There is also ship-to-ship combat, which Macgregor considered an enjoyable change of pace overall. His review cautions that large engagements can drag. If you like thinking through positioning and party roles, that tactical scale may be appealing; if you want quick, low-overhead encounters, the combination of layered rules and fight length is a meaningful drawback.

Is it a good choice for newcomers to Warhammer 40,000?

The game’s appeal is not limited to people already familiar with the setting: it gives you a defined role, a crew and a dangerous region to explore. But its density means that “new to Warhammer 40,000” and “new to complex CRPGs” are different hurdles. If you know the lore but prefer uncomplicated combat, the rules may still be a challenge. If you are comfortable learning interconnected systems, the setting and build options may give you plenty to explore.

It is most likely to suit players who enjoy lore-rich CRPGs, companion-driven stories, exploration, tactical party combat and experimenting with character builds. It is a less obvious fit if you want immediate action, minimal system management or consistently short fights. This is a recommendation based on the game’s described features and the cited reviews, not a measured audience finding.
