Warner Bros. Games closed Monolith Productions in February 2025 and stopped the studio’s Wonder Woman game, which had been announced in December 2021 and was no longer moving forward. The company gave strategic reasons. It did not give a project-level explanation, and most of the detail about the game’s development comes from anonymous sources. Warner Bros. Games’ announcement is dated February 25, 2025, so the reporting below reflects what was known at that time.
What Warner Bros. Games announced
The company’s statement, as reproduced by Gematsu and carried via Kotaku, named three studios for closure: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. It stated separately that Monolith’s Wonder Woman game “will not move forward.” The company called the closures a “strategic change in direction,” said they did not reflect on the teams or their talent, and described investment being organized around Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones.
The statement said Warner had hoped to give players and fans a high-quality Wonder Woman experience, but that this was no longer possible within its strategic priorities. It did not identify a single project-level cause for the cancellation.
What the Wonder Woman game was meant to be
Warner Bros. announced the game in December 2021. Variety reproduced the announced description: “The single player open-world action game will introduce an original story set in the DC Universe and allow players to become Diana of Themyscira in the fight to unite her Amazon family and the humans from the modern world.” That premise is the only officially described content. Platforms, release timing, and specific mechanics were not part of the public description reported in the coverage, so they should not be treated as established.

Development reporting and what it does and does not prove
The Los Angeles Times, citing unnamed people familiar with the project, reported that the game was rebooted and changed directors early in 2024, had cost more than $100 million, and was still years away from release. Warner’s public explanation did not confirm these details, so they should be read as anonymous reporting rather than company disclosure.
Warner Bros. Games’ finances were also under pressure at the time. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2025 a $200 million write-down related to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and a $100 million write-down related to Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and MultiVersus. Reuters reporting, carried by The Guardian, said David Haddad’s 12-year tenure leading the interactive entertainment unit ended with a departure announced in January 2025. These are business context. They are separate matters from the Wonder Woman development costs and should not be added to them or presented as the direct cause of the cancellation.
The executive memo
JB Perrette, identified by the Los Angeles Times as Warner Bros.’ head of games and streaming, wrote in a staff memo, as viewed by Bloomberg News, that “the quality of too many of our new releases has really missed the mark.” He also wrote that “we need to make some substantial changes to our portfolio/team structure if we are to commit the necessary resources to get back to a ‘fewer but bigger franchises’ strategy.”
The memo concerns the games portfolio and strategy as a whole. It does not address the Wonder Woman project specifically, and it should not be quoted as Perrette’s explanation of that game’s cancellation.

Monolith’s catalog
The Los Angeles Times reported that Monolith had been making video games since 1994, and named The Operative: No One Lives Forever, F.E.A.R., and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor among its notable titles, describing Shadow of Mordor as critically acclaimed. Gematsu also identifies the studio with Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War. That history is why the closure drew wide attention in games coverage.
