The Weekend Update face-off between Jason from Grand Theft Auto VI and Link from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time had a clear hook, but its reported jokes leaned on broad contrasts rather than details that make the characters’ worlds distinctive. Kotaku’s Zack Kotzer called the segment a “Pretty tortured stretch”—a pointed opinion, not a settled consensus. The bit may be weak; it does not, by itself, show what its writers know or how they prepared.
What happened in the sketch?
In a Weekend Update segment reported by Kotaku on October 4, 2026, Jason and Link appeared to pitch their games as rivals for November attention. Marcello Hernández played Jason, while Mikey Day played Link. The exchange reportedly traded on jokes about Link’s appearance and the chaotic life associated with Vice City before escalating to prop weapons. Kotaku’s account of the segment provides the reported details.
A separate contemporaneous recap describes the premise as a game-release face-off and reports Jason’s jab, “TMPNG: Too Many Puzzles, No Guns.” That is a secondary account, not an official transcript, so it is best treated as a reported line rather than a verified word-for-word record. Nintendo Life’s recap gives that version of the gag.
Why can a recognizable crossover still fall flat?
Putting characters from two famous games together supplies instant recognition, but recognition is only the setup. A stronger crossover lets the characters’ particular worlds shape the jokes: the references feel specific, the voices feel distinct, and the premise changes as the characters collide. If the humor mostly alternates between a general insult about one game and a general insult about the other, the concept can feel like a list of contrasts rather than a sketch with momentum.

Those are useful criteria for judging this kind of bit, not proof that the segment failed on every count. The reported face-off and the “Too Many Puzzles, No Guns” line suggest a broad contrast between the games, but the available accounts do not establish every line or scene well enough to make a definitive transcript-based assessment.
What does Kotaku’s criticism establish?
Kotaku writer Zack Kotzer described the bit as a “Pretty tortured stretch.” That phrase captures his review judgment: he found the segment labored. It is evidence that at least one critic disliked the sketch, not evidence of a broad critical consensus. Nor does a joke that feels shallow establish that its writers lacked expertise. The sources available do not identify the sketch’s writers, describe their research, explain SNL’s intended target beyond the on-screen premise, or establish any involvement by Nintendo or Rockstar.

How to judge the sketch without guessing about its writers
Separate what the bit puts on screen from conclusions about how it was made. For a game-character crossover, ask:
- Specificity: Do the jokes depend on recognizable details of the games, or could they be swapped into almost any rivalry?
- Character voice: Does each character sound and behave like a distinct comic persona, rather than serving as a label for a game?
- Development: Does the premise evolve beyond trading insults, or does it repeat the same contrast?
- Evidence: Are you judging the material that aired, or inferring what the writers knew, researched, or intended?
That last distinction matters. Calling a sketch weak is a fair critical response to its execution. Claiming its writers did not know the games, however, goes beyond what one segment and the available reporting can show.
