Yes—the masked torchbearer’s appearance was an intentional Assassin’s Creed reference, particularly to Arno Dorian from Assassin’s Creed Unity. That does not mean the performer was literally Arno, or that the person behind the mask was identified.
What happened at the Paris 2024 opening ceremony?
The Paris 2024 opening ceremony took place on 26 July 2024 and featured a mysterious masked torchbearer moving through the city. The official Paris 2024 final report describes the figure as a mysterious masked torchbearer, without naming the performer.

The next day, NBC Sports published footage framed with the question, “Was Arno from Assassin’s Creed the masked torchbearer at the Olympic Opening Ceremony?” That was NBC Sports’ framing of the visual resemblance, not an official identification by ceremony organizers.

The figure’s hood and parkour-like movement brought Assassin’s Creed to mind. Arno Dorian is the protagonist associated with Assassin’s Creed Unity, the 2014 installment set in Paris; the game’s rooftops made him a natural comparison for a hooded figure moving across the city.

Ubisoft encouraged that reading with a rooftop-themed post. As quoted in contemporaneous reporting by PC Gamer, Ubisoft wrote: “Keep an eye on Paris’ rooftops – Arno might just be watching from above.” The post supports the interpretation that the performance was a playful Arno reference; it does not establish that a game character appeared in the ceremony or that Ubisoft formally designed the segment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the performer actually Arno?
No. Arno is fictional, and the reviewed official event material does not identify the masked performer by name. The accurate description is that the torchbearer’s performance evoked Arno and that Ubisoft played along with the comparison—not that the actor was Arno or that the performer’s identity was revealed.
