Choose Watch Dogs 2 for Marcus Holloway’s story in the San Francisco Bay Area; choose Watch Dogs: Legion if recruiting a changing cast of Londoners is the hook you want. Both center hacking and resistance through DedSec, but their settings and player-character structures make them distinct open-world adventures. Ubisoft’s descriptions support a preference-based choice, not a single objective winner.

How the stories and player characters differ
Watch Dogs 2: Marcus and DedSec in the Bay Area
Watch Dogs 2 follows Marcus Holloway, a young hacker working with DedSec against ctOS 2.0 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ubisoft frames the game around connected technology as a tool: its official page describes hacking city infrastructure, devices, cars, drones, cranes, security robots, and personal databases. That gives the story a defined lead and a particular place to explore.

Watch Dogs: Legion: recruit a resistance across London
Legion shifts the action to a near-future London and makes recruitment central to its premise. Ubisoft says people encountered in the open world can become playable recruits, each bringing distinct abilities. Its 2019 overview also described characters with persistent schedules and backstories. Rather than following one named protagonist, the resistance is assembled from people across the city.
Which game’s open world and mechanics fit you?
- Pick Watch Dogs 2 if you want a named protagonist, Marcus’s DedSec story, and the Bay Area as your setting.
- Pick Watch Dogs: Legion if the London setting and the idea of building a team from people you encounter are more appealing than sticking with one lead.
- For hacking-focused play, both games make hacking central to their publisher-described pitches. Watch Dogs 2 highlights connected infrastructure, devices, vehicles, and personal data; Legion pairs hacking with infiltration, combat, and recruitment. Those descriptions alone do not establish which game’s missions or systems feel better to play.
Multiplayer: what Ubisoft’s descriptions establish
Ubisoft lists co-op and PvP activities for Watch Dogs 2. A 2019 overview announced four-player co-op and shared progression for Legion. These are published feature descriptions, not confirmation that every mode is currently available on every platform. If co-op or PvP is your deciding factor, check the game’s current platform-specific service information before buying; the available descriptions do not support a claim that one has better multiplayer.

Platforms, release dates, and editions
Ubisoft lists Watch Dogs 2 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a page release date of November 13, 2016. Its captured page presents Standard, Deluxe, and Gold editions; Deluxe Pack and Season Pass are named extras. Ubisoft’s Legion page lists PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, and gives October 28, 2020 as its release date. A July 2020 Ubisoft launch announcement instead said October 29, 2020, so the exact date differs between Ubisoft sources; avoid treating either as a universal date for every market or listing.
Ubisoft’s captured Canadian storefront page for Legion presents Standard, Deluxe, Gold, and Ultimate editions, plus DLC such as Bloodline and the Season Pass. Edition names, contents, and availability can vary by storefront and region. Its 2020 launch announcement also described a Collector’s Edition that bundled the Ultimate Edition with an LED Ded Coronet Mask replica, a Steelbook, stickers, and a two-sided propaganda poster. That is a description of the launch-era set, not evidence that it is currently available. Check the current listing for your region, platform, and format before purchase.
