Choose Watch Dogs for Aiden Pearce’s personal revenge story and a darker, surveillance-heavy Chicago. Choose Watch Dogs 2 for Marcus Holloway, DedSec’s crew-focused campaign, a brighter San Francisco Bay Area setting, and remote scouting with a ground robot and quadcopter. Neither is universally “better”; the right choice depends on which premise, tone, and approach to infiltration you want.
Watch Dogs vs. Watch Dogs 2 at a glance
The two games share a central idea: a connected city can be manipulated through cameras, infrastructure, and networked systems. Their differences are in who is doing the hacking, why they are doing it, how the tools shape encounters, and what kind of city surrounds the campaign.

What Watch Dogs is about
Aiden Pearce’s revenge premise
Watch Dogs follows Aiden Pearce, whom Ubisoft describes as a hacker and former thug. A criminal past contributes to a violent family tragedy, and the campaign is framed around Aiden’s attempt to pursue those responsible. That gives the original a personal, inward-driving motive: the city’s connected systems are tools in Aiden’s investigation and retaliation rather than the goal of a movement.

The premise also explains why the first game can feel more like a crime thriller than a conventional superhero adventure. Aiden is not introduced as a public campaigner trying to reform technology. He is using access to Chicago’s systems to pursue a private objective, and the consequences of that choice are tied to his family and past.
Chicago as a surveillance city
Chicago is presented as a city where surveillance is embedded in daily life. TIME’s 2014 review characterizes the setting as paranoid and saturated with monitoring, an interpretation that supports the original’s tense atmosphere. The city is not merely a backdrop for missions: cameras, traffic controls, and utilities are part of the fiction and part of the player’s toolkit.
The hacking premise is deliberately fictionalized. The games turn connected infrastructure into immediate, readable actions for dramatic play; they are not realistic cybersecurity tutorials or instructions for accessing real-world systems. TIME’s review specifically treats that premise as a gameplay conceit.

Marcus Holloway and DedSec
Watch Dogs 2 moves the point of view to Marcus Holloway, who joins DedSec in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ubisoft frames the campaign around taking down ctOS 2.0, the successor system that organizes surveillance and data about citizens. The conflict is therefore broader and more collective than Aiden’s family-centered pursuit: Marcus and DedSec are challenging how a system is used to classify, influence, and control people.
DedSec’s presence changes the campaign’s social texture. Instead of a lone protagonist whose past dominates every decision, Marcus operates as part of a crew with a shared target. GamesRadar+’s October 11, 2026 retrospective describes the sequel’s Bay Area as more colorful and its campaign as confronting corruption and the corporate weaponization of data. Those are retrospective critical judgments, not a claim that every player will experience the tone identically.
A brighter Bay Area and a more irreverent voice
TIME’s 2016 review characterizes Watch Dogs 2 as more irreverent than its predecessor. The humor and crew dynamic are not just cosmetic changes: they alter the emotional framing of hacking. The sequel presents disruption and exposure as group action, often with a more playful attitude, while the original places more weight on menace, grief, and suspicion.

- Open-world London, explore a massive urban open-world where you can visit London's many famous landmarks.
- Play as anyone, experience a never-seen-before gameplay innovation. Anyone you see can join your team complete with a unique backstory, personality, and skill set.
- Weaponize London's tech infrastructure. Hijack armed combat drones, deploy stealthy spider-bots, covertly take down enemies using an Augmented Reality Cloak, and much more.
- Bring your team online and join forces with up to three friends and explore the world together or take on entirely new co-op missions
That contrast is useful when deciding whether the sequel’s tone will suit you. If you want the world to reinforce a grim personal stake, Chicago and Aiden’s premise are the closer match. If you prefer a colorful setting and a team that treats anti-surveillance action with more levity, the Bay Area and DedSec provide that alternative.
Gameplay: what both games share
City systems as interactive tools
Ubisoft’s description of Watch Dogs specifically highlights manipulating traffic lights, detonating gas lines, and turning off the electrical grid. These systems let the player treat parts of Chicago as equipment: traffic can be interrupted, hazards can be triggered, and power can be cut to change what is visible or possible in an encounter. Steam’s product description also presents a combination of hacking, combat, driving, and multiplayer, but that listing is a feature summary rather than a complete mechanic-by-mechanic inventory.
Watch Dogs 2 retains the basic language of camera access and environmental interference. You still approach a space by looking for connected devices and opportunities to alter the environment instead of treating every obstacle as a direct firefight. The shared foundation means that someone who likes the original’s central fantasy—turning a networked city against its occupants—will recognize the sequel immediately.
What the documented evidence does not prove
The available descriptions do not establish a comprehensive comparison of enemy artificial intelligence, stealth depth, combat balance, mission variety, or driving physics. It would be misleading to declare one game categorically superior in all of those areas. The defensible comparison is narrower: both games make hacking and city infrastructure central, while Watch Dogs 2 adds specific remote devices that broaden how you scout and reach an infiltration space.
Gameplay: how Watch Dogs 2 changes infiltration
The ground robot
TIME’s Matt Peckham describes Watch Dogs 2’s two-wheeled ground robot as a proxy for spaces Marcus cannot easily enter himself. In practical terms, the robot lets you investigate or interact with tight areas while keeping Marcus at a safer distance. That changes the sequence of a typical approach: instead of moving the protagonist through every part of a guarded location, you can first send the device into a hard-to-reach space and use the information it provides to plan the next move.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe quadcopter
The same review describes the quadcopter as a reconnaissance tool that can scout and mark targets. Its value is planning rather than raw damage. Aerial scouting can reveal the layout of an area and identify targets before Marcus commits to a route, making the opening moments of an infiltration more deliberate.

- develop your skills and combine hacking, weapons and stealth to complete missions.experience the winding streets of San Francisco, the vibrant neighborhoods of Oakland and Silicon Valley
Peckham calls these devices useful additions to stealth puzzles. That is his review judgment, not a universal consensus, but it captures the sequel’s most concrete gameplay expansion documented in the sources: hacking is no longer only about taking over a camera or triggering a nearby environmental effect. It also includes choosing which remote device should gather information or reach the next interaction point.
Why the tools matter to play style
With the original, the central question is often how to weaponize the city systems immediately available to Aiden. With the sequel, an additional question is whether Marcus should act in person at all. Remote scouting can reduce uncertainty before an encounter, while the robot can serve as an intermediary for tight spaces. The games therefore differ less in the existence of hacking than in the number of ways the sequel lets you stage an approach.
Story, tone, and world: the important differences
Personal thriller versus crew-centered campaign
Watch Dogs is organized around a family tragedy and revenge. The emotional stakes are concentrated in Aiden’s past and the people connected to it. That structure favors a straightforward dramatic question: how far will he go, and what will his pursuit cost?
Watch Dogs 2 is organized around Marcus, DedSec, and ctOS 2.0. The stakes are directed at a system and the institutions using data about ordinary people. The result is a campaign whose identity comes from group action and public-facing disruption rather than one person’s private reckoning.
Paranoia versus irreverence
TIME’s review of the original emphasizes a paranoid Chicago, while its review of the sequel describes a more irreverent tone. The contrast is not simply “serious” versus “funny.” It affects how each game frames the same hacking fantasy. In Watch Dogs, surveillance creates menace and vulnerability. In Watch Dogs 2, the DedSec perspective makes surveillance a target for satire and coordinated mischief.
Peckham summarized his view of the sequel this way: “Watch Dogs 2 steps up the story, trades the last game’s self-important blather for charming for-the-lulz irreverence and makes the game’s reason for existing — using hacks to play enemies and environs off each other — feel almost jazz-like.” That sentence is a single critic’s 2016 opinion, useful for understanding the tonal shift but not evidence of a universal verdict.

Chicago versus the San Francisco Bay Area
Chicago supports the original’s darker surveillance atmosphere. The Bay Area supports Watch Dogs 2’s brighter visual identity and its focus on DedSec’s network of people. GamesRadar+’s 2026 retrospective likewise describes the sequel’s world as colorful while connecting its campaign to corruption and corporate data practices.
These settings can change which game feels more inviting even before a mission begins. Choose Chicago if the city’s unease and Aiden’s isolated pursuit are part of the appeal. Choose the Bay Area if you want the setting and supporting crew to reinforce a more energetic, irreverent campaign.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game is better for you?
Choose Watch Dogs when…
- You want the story to center on Aiden Pearce, a hacker with a criminal past and a family tragedy driving his actions.
- You prefer a darker, surveillance-heavy Chicago atmosphere.
- You want city infrastructure such as traffic lights, gas lines, and the electrical grid to be the clearest expression of the hacking fantasy.
- You would rather follow a personal revenge thriller than a group campaign.
Choose Watch Dogs 2 when…
- You want to play as Marcus Holloway alongside DedSec.
- You prefer a brighter San Francisco Bay Area setting and a more irreverent tone.
- You value reconnaissance and remote infiltration options, especially the ground robot for tight spaces and the quadcopter for scouting and marking targets.
- You are more interested in opposing ctOS 2.0 and the manipulation of citizen data than pursuing a family-centered revenge plot.
If you are undecided
Start with the premise rather than an assumed quality ranking. The original is the better thematic fit for a player who wants Aiden’s personal stakes and Chicago’s paranoia. The sequel is the better fit for a player who wants Marcus, DedSec, a lighter voice, and additional remote tools. The sources support that preference trade-off; they do not support an objective claim that one game wins every category.
Platforms, release dates, and availability
Ubisoft lists different platform lineups for the two games. The listed release dates are May 27, 2014 for Watch Dogs and November 13, 2016 for Watch Dogs 2. Launch timing can vary by platform or territory, and current store availability, prices, subscriptions, and online-service status are volatile.

Check the store for your country and the exact edition before buying. Ubisoft’s platform pages establish the listed support but do not guarantee that every edition, server feature, or digital listing remains available in every region. For a PC copy, the Steam listing is another place to check the product description and service requirements (Steam’s Watch Dogs 2 listing). A physical “Watch Dogs 2 PS4 game” search may return different editions or regional stock; verify the listing rather than assuming a particular price or package.

The protagonists, cities, and immediate premises differ: Aiden Pearce’s Chicago revenge story is not the same narrative as Marcus Holloway and DedSec’s fight against ctOS 2.0 in the Bay Area. You can therefore choose based on tone and mechanics without treating the first game as a prerequisite for understanding the second. Playing in release order is still a reasonable option if you want to see how the shared city-hacking concept develops from infrastructure manipulation to a broader set of remote scouting tools.
What the games say about hacking
Both titles use hacking as a fictional action-game system. Selecting a camera, interrupting a traffic light, triggering a gas line, or sending a robot through a restricted space is designed to create readable decisions and dramatic cause-and-effect. These mechanics should not be mistaken for realistic instructions about compromising city infrastructure, surveillance systems, or other real networks. The comparison is about how each game turns that fiction into play: Watch Dogs foregrounds the city as a weapon, while Watch Dogs 2 adds more ways to observe and reach a space before Marcus enters it.
Final decision
There is no single winner independent of taste. Watch Dogs is the focused choice for a darker Chicago revenge thriller built around Aiden Pearce and direct manipulation of urban infrastructure. Watch Dogs 2 is the focused choice for Marcus Holloway, DedSec’s crew dynamic, a brighter and more irreverent Bay Area, and gadget-assisted scouting with a ground robot and quadcopter. Make that choice first; then confirm the edition, region, platform, and current store status before purchasing.
