To uninstall one Steam game, open its Library entry and use the game-level uninstall option, then inspect the Steam library folder that contains it. Delete only a clearly identified folder belonging to that game after Steam finishes. Do not use Windows or macOS tools to uninstall the Steam client unless you intend to remove Steam and potentially all installed game content.
Before deleting anything manually, check saves, Steam Cloud status, mods, screenshots, configurations, and files you may want for a later reinstall. A game uninstall removes the installed title, but it does not guarantee that every save, workshop file, launcher component, or user-created file disappears.

First decide what you are removing
Steam has several different cleanup tasks that are easy to confuse:
| Task | What it affects | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall one game | The selected title’s installed files in a Steam library | The game’s Library menu in Steam |
| Keep files for a later reinstall | Game files remain available, even if Steam no longer displays the installation correctly | Keep or back up the matching game folder and library information |
| Free space permanently | The selected game’s installation and confirmed leftovers | Uninstall in Steam, then remove only the matching game-specific folder |
| Uninstall Steam itself | The Steam client and, on Windows, installed game content in the Steam installation directory | The operating system’s app uninstaller or Steam’s platform-specific removal instructions |
Steam’s Windows support page describes client removal this way: “This process will remove Steam and any installed game content from your machine.” That warning concerns removing the Steam client, not the normal removal of one game from the Library.

Protect saves and custom files before uninstalling
Game installations and personal data are not always in the same directory. A title may store saves in Steam Cloud, in a user profile, in Documents, or in a publisher-specific location. Mods, screenshots, configuration files, shader or compatibility data, and third-party launcher files can also be separate from the main installation.
Check Steam Cloud and local saves
Steam Cloud can contain saves, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific data. Steam stores local Cloud data in a userdata directory organized by Steam account ID and game appID:
| Platform | Steam Cloud userdata location |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata by default |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
These are local copies of Cloud data, not a universal save location for every game. Steam notes that local and cloud versions can differ and may produce a synchronization conflict. If a save matters, allow synchronization to complete and make a separate backup before deleting local files. Do not assume that a Cloud copy makes it safe to delete every local save immediately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Look for non-Cloud saves and profiles
Steam’s moving guidance says many third-party games that do not use Steam Cloud store saves or profiles under C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games on Windows. This is an example, not a rule. Developers choose their own locations, so consult the game’s support documentation when a save is important or cannot be found in Steam Cloud.
Preserve mods, screenshots, and configurations deliberately
Copy any mod folder, screenshot collection, configuration, controller layout export, or custom content you want to keep before uninstalling. Workshop content and files installed by a separate launcher may not follow the same removal behavior as the main Steam depot. A publisher’s own support instructions take precedence for those components.

How to uninstall one Steam game
- Open Steam and go to Library. Select the game you want to remove. Make sure you are acting on the game entry, not on Steam in your operating system’s list of installed apps.
- Open the game’s management menu. Use the current client’s game-level uninstall or removal command and accept the confirmation dialog. Steam’s current label can change between client versions and operating systems. An older official game manual calls the command “Delete Local Content…”; treat that wording as older, title-specific evidence rather than a guarantee of the current label.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Let the download or disk-activity indicators stop before inspecting folders. Do not forcibly close Steam while it is updating library information.
- Check the Library entry. The game should now offer an install option rather than a play option. If Steam still offers Play, troubleshoot the library location and installation state before deleting anything.
- Decide whether manual cleanup is necessary. If the game’s own folder is gone and you do not need separate saves or custom files, stop. Manual deletion is only for identifiable leftovers, not a reason to remove an entire Steam library.
Find the correct Steam library folder
Steam can use more than one library. Do not assume that the default path contains every game.
Windows
Steam documents C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon as the default location for installed game folders. A game may instead be in another library selected through Steam’s storage settings. Open Steam’s storage or library-management view and identify the drive and folder assigned to that game. Then open that library’s steamappscommon directory and look for the title’s clearly named folder.
macOS
Use the library location shown by Steam rather than assuming that the application in /Applications contains the game. macOS installations can use a library on another volume, and the game folder belongs to that library’s SteamApps structure.
Linux and Steam Deck
Linux and Steam Deck installations can use internal or removable library locations, including compatibility-data directories. The available material does not establish a universal list of files removed by every current per-game uninstall on Linux. Identify the library through Steam and check the specific game’s save and compatibility guidance before manual deletion.
Remove only confirmed game-specific leftovers
Close Steam before manually changing its directories. Steam warns that an interrupted client can corrupt library or installation information while it is writing.

- Confirm the game is uninstalled in Steam. If Steam still treats it as installed, use the troubleshooting section below instead of deleting files immediately.
- Open the matching library. Go to the library that actually contained the game, then its
steamappscommonequivalent. - Match the folder carefully. Check the folder name, nearby files, and approximate size. Some games use a publisher or internal name rather than the exact store title.
- Check for valuable contents. If the folder contains mods, screenshots, configuration exports, or anything you may reuse, copy those items first.
- Delete only that game’s folder. Do not delete the entire
steamapps, common, userdata, Steam folder, or library drive to remove one title. - Empty the operating system’s recycle bin or Trash only after checking. Until then, the files may still be recoverable through the normal operating-system restore process.
This narrow cleanup approach follows Steam’s documented directory layout and avoids confusing game files with shared client data. It is not a guarantee that every third-party launcher, mod manager, or non-Cloud save has been removed.

Keep the files or reclaim the disk space?
Keep files for a later reinstall
If you may reinstall soon, do not delete the game folder merely because Steam no longer recognizes it. Steam’s support guidance explains that games can appear uninstalled when files remain in a proper library but Steam has lost track of them. Keep the matching folder, preserve the library path, and use Steam’s library-management process to point the client back to that location. Existing files may then be detected instead of downloaded again.
For a more portable backup, move or copy the game content outside the Steam directory before removing Steam itself. Keep a record of the original library path and back up saves separately; game files alone do not necessarily contain personal progress.
Remove files to free space
Use Steam’s game-level uninstall first, then inspect only the matching game folder. Check the folder size before deleting it so you know whether it is the large installation you intended to remove. Leave userdata, shared redistributables, other game folders, and unrelated library content intact.
If the folder remains or Steam still thinks the game is installed
The folder remains but the game is uninstalled
Confirm that the folder is inside the library Steam used for that title. If it is clearly named for the removed game and contains no files you need, close Steam and remove it. If the name is ambiguous, leave it in place until you identify the game or inspect its contents safely.

Steam says the game is installed
Do not delete the folder as a first response. Steam may still see an installation, or the client may be pointed at a different library. Check Steam’s storage view and the game’s installed-files information. If your goal is repair rather than removal, use the verification procedure in the next section.
The files remain and you want to reinstall without downloading again
Keep the files. Add or select the library that contains them, then start the game’s installation to that same library. Steam can recognize existing files when the library is configured correctly. Deleting the folder first defeats that recovery path.

On Windows, Steam’s published instructions are for Windows 10 and begin by telling you to exit Steam. They advise moving steamapps outside the Steam folder first if you want to preserve game installations, then using Settings > Apps to uninstall Steam. The uninstaller deletes the Steam installation directory and installed game content. If Steam was installed directly into a folder that also contains unrelated data, Steam warns against running the normal uninstaller because that folder may be removed.
That process is appropriate for removing the client, not for removing one title. Before client removal, back up or move the game content you want to retain and separately check Cloud and non-Cloud saves.

Retain game data
If you want to preserve installed games, Steam’s instructions say to delete files and folders inside the Steam support folder except SteamApps. That retains the game-content directory while removing other client data. Back up the folder first if the games are important.
Remove all Steam data
If you intend to erase the entire Steam installation, delete the complete ~/Library/Application Support/Steam folder after confirming that saves and game files are backed up. Empty the Trash to finish. These are client-removal steps and are unnecessary for uninstalling a single game.
Use verification when the real problem is a damaged install
If the game fails to launch, crashes, or has missing files, uninstalling may be the wrong fix. Steam provides a repair option at Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.

Verification compares the installation with Steam’s expected files and can redownload damaged or missing content. Steam notes that some local configuration files that fail verification are expected; they should not automatically be replaced. Back up custom settings before running repairs if those settings matter.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using Windows Settings or macOS Trash to remove Steam when you meant to remove one game.
- Deleting the entire Steam folder,
steamapps, common, oruserdatafor a single-title cleanup. - Assuming every save is in the game’s installation folder.
- Assuming Steam Cloud is synchronized without checking its status or resolving a conflict.
- Deleting a folder before confirming which Steam library contains the game.
- Removing shared redistributables or workshop data that another game may use.
- Force-quitting Steam while it is writing library or installation information.
- Editing the Windows registry as a routine cleanup step. Steam discusses registry removal only as part of manual Steam-client removal and warns that registry editing requires extreme care.
- Deleting a game folder when the real objective is to repair a damaged installation; use file verification instead.
A safe decision checklist
- One game or all of Steam? For one game, use its Library entry. For all Steam data, follow the platform’s client-removal procedure.
- Do you need progress later? Check Cloud synchronization and back up non-Cloud saves before deleting.
- Do you need the installation later? Keep or copy the game folder and note its library path.
- Are you removing files for disk space? Uninstall first, then delete only the matching game-specific leftover.
- Is Steam confused about the install? Confirm the library path and consider recognizing existing files instead of deleting them.
- Is the game merely broken? Verify the integrity of its files before choosing removal.
