wbemcons.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, and it belongs to Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI. If Windows reports that wbemcons.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit program can be redirected from System32 to SysWOW64. That means the path seen by an application may not match the path you inspect manually. Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation for the Windows file system redirector.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
wbemcons.dll was not foundCannot find wbemcons.dllThe code execution cannot proceed because wbemcons.dll was not foundThe application was unable to start correctly because wbemcons.dll was not foundwbemcons.dll could not be loaded
These are generic Windows loader messages. They do not identify one specific game, update, or installer as the cause.
The usual possibilities are:
- Windows component corruption or deletion
- Antivirus quarantine
- An interrupted Windows update or servicing operation
- A damaged program that calls WMI
- Confusion between 32-bit and 64-bit paths
- Malware or other system tampering
- A missing dependency rather than
wbemcons.dllitself
Start with Windows repair because this file is serviced as part of Windows.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Pending updates can leave protected system components in an incomplete state. Finish updates before running deeper repairs.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the affected program again.
If the error started immediately after an interrupted update, restarting may complete the servicing process. If the problem remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files used by System File Checker. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when suitable repair content is available.
Run DISM first, then SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and let it finish.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program that displayed the error.
Do not close the Command Prompt window just because progress appears to pause. Component repair can take time, particularly on a system with storage or servicing problems.

How to interpret SFC
SFC may report one of several outcomes:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. The application, antivirus history, architecture, or another dependency may be responsible.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, inspect
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.logor use a matching Windows installation source as described in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guidance.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and build.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what system issues remain when manually repeating SFC and DISM provides little information; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for this Windows repair.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection history
Windows Defender or another security product may have quarantined the file. Do not assume that removal was a false positive until you verify the detection, original path, and file signature.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection related to
wbemcons.dll. - Check the detected file path and the detection details.
- If the file was located in the expected Windows WMI directory and the detection is confirmed as safe, use the available Restore or Allow on device option.
- Update security definitions and run a scan afterward.
Only restore a file after checking its location and details. Restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the system at risk. Microsoft describes the Protection history controls in its Windows Security documentation.

If you are unsure about the detection, leave the file quarantined and complete Windows repair first. You can also run a full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline.
Fix 4: Repair the affected application
If only one old application or game reports the error, the application may be damaged even if Windows itself is healthy. A program can display a missing-DLL message when its own files, launcher, dependencies, or startup configuration are broken.
First complete Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Then repair the program:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available.
Reset can remove application settings, so use it only when Repair does not help.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Restart after repair or reinstall.
- Download the installer only from the application’s official vendor source.
For a game, open its launcher and use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files feature if available. If the error affects only that game, reinstalling or repairing the game remains the definitive application-level fix.
Do not copy wbemcons.dll into the game folder as a substitute for repairing the installation. The message may be caused by another dependency or by a damaged launcher.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit path confusion
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit programs use file system redirection. A 32-bit process may see a different system directory view from a 64-bit process.
The normal WMI location is:
%WINDIR%System32wbem
To inspect it:
- Press Windows + E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
%WINDIR%System32wbem
- Press Enter.
- Look for
wbemcons.dll.
If you are troubleshooting a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows, the relevant redirected location may involve SysWOW64. Do not copy one architecture’s DLL over another architecture’s file, and do not assume that manually seeing one copy proves that every application can load it.
If the file exists, is in a Windows WMI directory, and is digitally signed by Microsoft, the error may involve:
- A dependent DLL
- The application’s architecture
- A damaged application installation
- Antivirus interference
- A failed Windows servicing operation
The file’s existence alone does not prove that the loader can use it successfully.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is designed for self-registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command for every DLL.
Running a command such as this is not a recommended fix:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →regsvr32 wbemcons.dll
A “not self-registerable” or missing-entry-point error does not mean that the file is necessarily damaged. It usually means that regsvr32 is the wrong tool for that module. Microsoft explains the scope and common errors of Regsvr32.
Repair this Windows component through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Fix 7: Avoid unnecessary Windows Features and driver changes
WMI is part of Windows, but enabling unrelated entries under Windows Features will not normally restore a missing protected DLL.
To inspect Windows Features:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the listed features.
- Do not enable or disable random features as a response to this error.
- Select Cancel unless you have a separate, known feature requirement.
Device Manager is also not the normal repair path for wbemcons.dll. This is not a graphics, chipset, audio, or controller driver file.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf the affected application also reports hardware or driver errors, update the relevant device separately:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking many driver versions; its free scan identifies outdated drivers, while installation is handled by the full version, but driver updating is not the primary fix for a standalone wbemcons.dll error.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the problem began after a failed update, driver installation, program installation, or other system change, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier restore point.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
System Restore normally does not change personal documents, but it can remove programs, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft provides more detail in its System Restore guidance.

- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- Missing dependencies
- An invalid or altered signature
- Malware
- No relationship to the actual damaged component store
It can also bypass Windows servicing, leaving the underlying problem unresolved.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows recovery tools, Microsoft installation media, and the original application vendor when the application itself is damaged.
Do not copy the file into arbitrary folders
Do not place wbemcons.dll into a game directory, application directory, or random system folder. Windows components belong to the locations used by Windows servicing and WMI. Manual copying can create version and architecture mismatches.
Do not reset the WMI repository immediately
A missing DLL and a damaged WMI repository are different problems. Repository reset commands should be considered only when diagnostics show WMI repository inconsistency or WMI-specific errors. They are not a substitute for restoring a missing protected system file.
FAQ
Is wbemcons.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with WMI standard event consumers. Confirm the file’s path and Microsoft digital signature if you are investigating an existing copy.
Is wbemcons.dll part of Visual C++?
No. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not a targeted fix for this file.
Should I register wbemcons.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX modules, not generic Windows components such as this one.

Why does a game mention a Windows WMI file?
The game or launcher may call Windows services during startup, installation, hardware detection, telemetry, or configuration. The message does not prove that the game shipped this DLL. Repair Windows first, then verify or reinstall the game if it is the only affected program.
What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error remains?
Restart and test again. If the error continues, check antivirus Protection history, verify the application’s files, and consider that another dependency may be missing. A file that exists can still fail to load because of its dependency chain or architecture.
Should I expect the same version and file size on every PC?
No. Version and size vary with Windows release, architecture, edition, and servicing level. A historical Microsoft file listing should not be treated as a universal current specification.
When should I use WMI repair?
Only when Windows reports WMI repository inconsistency or other WMI-specific diagnostics. A wbemcons.dll loader message alone is not enough reason to reset the repository.

What information is useful if the problem continues?
Record the exact error text, Windows version, affected program, whether other applications show the same problem, the file path if present, the result of DISM and SFC, and any matching entry in Windows Security Protection history. These details separate Windows corruption from an application-specific or security-related failure.
