wma2.dll is an Adobe Audition application file, not a normal Windows component. If Windows reports that wma2.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Adobe Audition installation that originally supplied it rather than copying a replacement into System32.
What wma2.dll is
| Detail | Identification |
|---|---|
| File | wma2.dll |
| Reported description | Adobe Audition Language Module |
| Associated product | Adobe Audition German Language Module |
| Publisher reported by public metadata | Adobe Systems, Incorporated |
| File category | Third-party application component |
| Typical location | Adobe Audition’s program folder or language-module folder |
| Windows system file | No reliable evidence places it among Windows protected system files |
Public file metadata associates wma2.dll particularly with the legacy Adobe Audition 1.5 generation. Some inventories describe it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL, while other public listings provide conflicting architecture information. That means you should treat the original Adobe installer as the authority for the exact build, language, and architecture on your computer.

The name can also cause confusion because it resembles Windows Media Audio terminology. That does not make it a Microsoft Windows DLL. It should also not be confused with wmasvc.dll, a separate Audition-related file.

- “A required component is missing: wma2.dll.”
- “Error loading wma2.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because wma2.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load wma2.dll.”
These messages usually point to an incomplete, damaged, moved, or quarantined Adobe Audition installation. The phrase “specified module could not be found” can also mean that wma2.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot be loaded.
Before changing Windows, confirm which program displays the message. If it is Adobe Audition or software installed alongside an old Audition installation, continue with the steps below. If it is a game or unrelated application, inspect that program’s own installation and repair options instead.
Fix wma2.dll missing errors in the right order
1. Check the Adobe Audition folder and Recycle Bin
Start with the least destructive check.
- Right-click the Adobe Audition shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look in the folder that opens for
wma2.dll. - Also check any language, localization, or modules subfolder.
- Open the Recycle Bin and search for
wma2.dll. - If you find the file in the Recycle Bin, right-click it and select Restore.
- Start Adobe Audition again from its normal shortcut.
If the program starts, the file was probably deleted or moved from its expected application directory. Do not move it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Application DLLs normally need to remain beside the executable or in the specific subdirectory expected by that application.

If the file exists but the error remains, do not overwrite it immediately. The copy may have the wrong version, may be damaged, or may depend on another missing module. Continue with the installation repair.
2. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or isolate an old application file, especially when the program is no longer commonly installed.
The exact labels vary between antivirus products, but the process is generally:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Adobe Audition or
wma2.dll. - Review the detected file path and detection reason.
- Restore the file only if it came from the original trusted Adobe installation and the security product identifies the detection as a false positive.
- If you are unsure, leave the file quarantined.
- Run a scan of the complete Adobe Audition folder.
- Repair or reinstall Audition from trusted Adobe installation media instead.
A file named wma2.dll is not automatically safe merely because its name matches an Adobe component. Check its original path and publisher information. If the file was found in a temporary folder, a downloads folder, or an unrelated program directory, do not restore it blindly.
3. Repair or reinstall Adobe Audition
This is the most likely definitive fix because wma2.dll belongs to the application, not to Windows.
For a current Creative Cloud installation
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Find Audition in the installed applications list.
- Open the application’s More actions menu.
- Choose the available option to uninstall or manage the installation.
- If a repair or reset option is offered, use it first.
- If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall Audition.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud again.
- Install Audition from the official Adobe application catalogue.
- Start Audition and test the operation that previously produced the error.
If you need an older version and it is available for your account, open the Audition entry in Creative Cloud, select More actions, choose Other versions, and select the required release. Availability depends on your account, licence, region, and Adobe’s current catalogue.

For legacy Adobe Audition 1.5
Audition 1.5 is an old Windows-only release. It predates current Windows versions, so even a correctly restored installation may have compatibility limitations on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Use the original licensed Adobe installer or an authenticated Adobe recovery route:
- Back up Audition projects, presets, templates, and custom audio files.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features, depending on your Windows version.
- Find Adobe Audition.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original Adobe installer using Run as administrator.
- Install the complete application and its required language module.
- Restart Windows again.
- Start Audition and test it before restoring custom plug-ins or preferences.
If the installer cannot overwrite existing files, remove the failed installation first, restart, and run the installer again. Do not mix files from several Audition releases. A language module from a different build can cause loader errors, crashes, or missing dependencies.
If you no longer have the licensed installer, do not substitute an isolated DLL. Use original media, an Adobe-provided recovery route, or migrate to a currently supported Audition release.
4. Check whether the file is in the wrong application directory
A common failure occurs after manually moving an old program between drives.
- Right-click the Audition shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Record the path shown in Target.
- Select Open File Location.
- Confirm that the executable and its supporting folders are together.
- Search the installation drive for
wma2.dll. - If there are several copies, note their locations without copying any of them.
- Reinstall Audition rather than choosing a random copy.
The correct location is normally the Adobe Audition program directory or its language-module directory. It is not normally a Windows system folder.

- The source file came from the same original Adobe installer.
- Its path and publisher can be verified.
- It belongs to the same Audition release and language installation.
- It is copied into the exact Adobe program directory that expects it.
Even then, a complete repair or reinstall is preferable because the missing DLL may be only one symptom of a damaged installation.
5. Investigate a dependency error
If wma2.dll is visibly present but Windows still says “The specified module could not be found,” the loader may be failing on a dependency.

Repair the parent application first. Then read the complete error message carefully. A later message may identify a separate missing runtime or component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not begin by installing random Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages. Those packages do not normally recreate an Adobe-specific language module. Install a runtime only when a separate error identifies that runtime or when the official Adobe installer requires it.
Also check the application’s bitness. Public metadata labels one version of wma2.dll as Win32, but public listings are not consistent about architecture. A legacy 32-bit Audition installation should use the matching module from its own installer. A 64-bit file with the same name is not automatically interchangeable.
6. Reset Audition preferences if the program starts
Preference corruption usually does not explain a genuinely missing DLL, but it can cause Audition to fail after an update, settings change, or plug-in installation.
To reset preferences:
- Close Audition.
- Hold Shift.
- While holding the key, start Audition.
- Continue holding it until Audition presents the preference reset behavior.
- Confirm the reset if prompted.
- Test the application with a new project.
Back up custom workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, presets, and templates first. If Audition still reports that wma2.dll is absent, return to application repair rather than repeatedly resetting preferences.
7. Repair Windows components only for broader Windows problems
wma2.dll is associated with Adobe Audition, so Windows repair commands are not expected to recreate it. Use them when other protected Windows files are also damaged, Windows features are failing, or multiple unrelated applications show system corruption symptoms.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Adobe Audition again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command normally restores an application-private Adobe DLL. If the commands report that Windows repaired files but Audition still cannot find wma2.dll, repair Audition itself.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM can be time-consuming when the actual problem is an incomplete Adobe installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair function requires the full version, and reinstalling Adobe Audition remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
8. Update drivers only when the evidence points to a driver problem
Audio drivers can cause Audition crashes, playback failures, or device initialization errors, but they do not normally supply wma2.dll. Do not treat a missing application DLL as a reason to replace every driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Audition launches but audio hardware fails:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test Audition again.
For a recently updated driver, right-click the device, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the option is available. Obtain audio drivers from the computer or sound-card manufacturer when possible.

Finding stale drivers manually means checking several hardware vendors and matching each package to the correct Windows build. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation through the full version is optional, and driver replacement is not the primary repair for a missing wma2.dll.
What not to do
Do not download a random replacement DLL
A standalone DLL from an unverified download page can be:
- The wrong Audition release.
- The wrong language module.
- The wrong architecture.
- Modified or malicious.
- Missing its own dependencies.
- Unable to repair the damaged installation that caused the error.
It can also create a misleading result where the original missing-file message disappears but Audition crashes later. Use the original Adobe installer, a verified Adobe account, or licensed installation media instead.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not copy wma2.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders hold Windows components and shared system libraries. Placing an Adobe application DLL there does not properly install it and can create version conflicts with other software. Keep the file inside the Adobe Audition installation directory.
Do not register it with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the registration entry points used by COM or ActiveX components. An application-private language module is not normally installed that way.
If you run:
regsvr32 wma2.dll
you may receive an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found, or that the module could not be loaded. That does not prove the file belongs in Windows or that registration is the missing step. Microsoft documents these registration limitations and the related DllRegisterServer errors.
Do not install every runtime package as a guess
Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX components, and .NET versions serve different purposes. Install one only when the Adobe installer or a separate error specifically identifies it. None of these packages normally replaces the Adobe Audition language module.

Do not use Windows Features as a substitute for Adobe repair
Windows Features can enable components such as legacy .NET Framework support or media features, but they do not install wma2.dll.
If a separate installer specifically asks for a Windows feature:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose More Windows features.
- Enable only the component named by the installer.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
For the missing DLL itself, repair or reinstall Audition.

Frequently asked questions
Is wma2.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence places it among Windows protected system files. Available metadata identifies it as an Adobe Audition language module, particularly associated with the old German Language Module installation.
Is wma2.dll related to Windows Media Audio?
The filename suggests that possibility, but the available product identification points to Adobe Audition. Do not assume that a Windows Media feature will restore it.
Which Adobe product uses wma2.dll?
Public metadata associates it with the Adobe Audition German Language Module and especially the legacy Audition 1.5-era Windows installation. Current Audition installations may use different files and supported language arrangements.
Should I register wma2.dll?
Normally no. It is an application-private module, not a DLL that should be registered globally with regsvr32.
Should I download wma2.dll if reinstalling Audition is inconvenient?
No. A random copy can be unsafe or incompatible. Reinstall the exact Adobe Audition release from original licensed media or an authenticated Adobe source.
What if Windows says the specified module could not be found even though the file exists?
A dependency of wma2.dll may be missing, or the file may be damaged or mismatched. Repair the complete Audition installation first, then investigate any later error that names a specific runtime or component.
Can SFC or DISM restore wma2.dll?
Normally no. They repair Windows component files, while wma2.dll belongs to Adobe Audition. Use those commands only when broader Windows corruption is also present.
What if I still use Audition 1.5 on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Audition 1.5 is a legacy Windows application and was designed before current Windows releases. Reinstalling its files may resolve the DLL error, but full compatibility with modern Windows is not guaranteed. Use the original licensed installer, test with administrator permissions and compatibility settings only when needed, and consider moving to a supported Audition version.
