The 60-second answer
wclpowrprof.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Class Library. It normally belongs to Windows itself, not to a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET package, or a particular game.

Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32. First repair Windows servicing:
- Open Start, type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged or missing copies. Microsoft documents this sequence in its Windows image repair guidance and System File Checker documentation.
If only one application reports the error, repair Windows first, then repair or reinstall that application. If the message continues, identify the program requesting the DLL before making further changes.
What wclpowrprof.dll is
The filename is associated with Microsoft’s Windows Class Library. Windows normally keeps a system copy under:
%WINDIR%System32
Windows component-store copies can also exist under the WinSxS directory. The component store is the source Windows uses when repairing protected files, which is why copying a DLL from another computer is not a reliable repair.
On 64-bit Windows, the architecture matters:
System32contains native 64-bit system files.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.
A 32-bit game or utility may therefore need the 32-bit Windows copy even when the operating system itself is 64-bit. Windows file-system redirection controls which architecture an application sees, as described in Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation.
Historical public inventories list both 32-bit and 64-bit records, but those records are not a complete official version list for every Windows release. Do not choose a download based on a version or file-size table.
What the error actually means
The message does not always prove that the named file alone is missing.
“The program can’t start because the file is missing”
Windows could not load the requested system component at the time the application started. The file may genuinely be absent, damaged, quarantined, or unavailable through the component store.
“The code execution cannot proceed”
This is another loader failure. It commonly appears when an application requests a DLL that Windows cannot locate or validate.
“The specified module could not be found”
This wording can be misleading. Windows may have found wclpowrprof.dll but failed to load a dependency required by it. Repairing only the visible file may not solve the underlying problem.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or an entry-point error
This usually points to an incompatible, damaged, or wrong-architecture copy. A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch can produce a different error rather than a simple missing-file message.
Find out what is requesting the DLL
Before repairing an application, determine whether the error affects Windows, a service, or one executable.
- Note when the message appears.
- If it appears after launching a game, launcher, utility, or editor, record that program’s name.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and choose Properties.
- Check the Target field to see which executable starts.
- In Task Manager, right-click the application process if it remains open and choose Open file location.
- Check whether the error points to a Windows directory or to the application’s own folder.
If the failing executable is in C:Windows, repair Windows first. If it is inside a game or application directory, repair Windows and then use that program’s official repair or reinstall process.
Do not assume that a file beside a game is supplied by the game. Windows loader errors can appear while an application is starting even when the missing component belongs to Windows.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important fix when the file is missing from System32, several Windows features fail, or the problem began after an interrupted update, cleanup, or upgrade.
Check the component store first
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
You can assess the component store with:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
For a deeper scan, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
These commands inspect the image. They do not normally repair it.
Repair the component store
Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Leave the window open until the command completes. DISM normally obtains repair content through Windows Update.

SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupt files. Restart Windows after it finishes and test the application again.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run DISM once more, followed by SFC. The servicing log is located at:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log
If DISM cannot find source files, use matching Windows installation media. The source must match the installed edition, language, architecture, and a sufficiently compatible build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
Replace X: with the installation media drive letter. Do not use an arbitrary image from another Windows release.

Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention, while its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the correct first-line tools.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a system file after a mistaken detection or after malware has modified it.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
wclpowrprof.dll. - Expand the event and inspect the original file path and detection details.
Only restore the file if you have confirmed that the original path was a legitimate Windows directory and the detection is demonstrably false. If Defender offers Allow on device, use it only after checking the file’s location and system health.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to suppress the error. If the file was removed because of malware, restoring it without scanning the system can make the problem worse. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and investigate suspicious copies in temporary, download, user-profile, or random application directories.

Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave the component store and protected files out of sync.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
On supported Windows 11 systems, you may also see a repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Select Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Choose Reinstall now.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Microsoft describes the process in its Windows Update repair guide.

If Windows repairs complete successfully but one application still fails, the application may be damaged or may be loading a dependency from its own directory.
For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Open Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or equivalent option only when the error path points into the game’s installation folder. Otherwise, repair Windows rather than replacing system files inside the game directory.
If repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. Back up saves, profiles, and settings first where applicable.
Fix 5: Confirm the architecture and file location
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may not use the same system copy as a 64-bit application.
Check the application’s documentation or executable properties to determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder, or vice versa.

- A copy beside an application does not automatically prove that the application installed it.
You can check a file’s signature by right-clicking it, selecting Properties, and opening the Digital Signatures tab when available. A signature check is useful, but it does not replace DISM, SFC, or malware scanning.

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL installation command. It is intended for libraries that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
Recommended Free Tools
Running:
regsvr32 wclpowrprof.dll
will not restore a missing Windows component and may produce an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not mean Windows needs a different copy. Repair the component store instead.
Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when evidence points there
Drivers are not a normal source of this particular Windows DLL. Do not begin by reinstalling graphics, chipset, or power-management drivers unless the error appeared immediately after a driver change and Event Viewer or the affected program identifies that driver.
When a driver is genuinely implicated:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or Uninstall Device as appropriate.
- Restart Windows.
Guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale is inefficient. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan the installed drivers and identify candidates, while the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and a driver reinstall remains appropriate only when the evidence connects that driver to the failure.
Windows Features is not a normal fix for wclpowrprof.dll. Enabling .NET Framework, legacy DirectPlay, or another optional feature will not restore this Windows Class Library component unless a separate application specifically requires that feature.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a known change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a recent update, program installation, or configuration change.
- Press Start and type
Create a restore point. - Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next and then Finish.
- Restart and test Windows.
You can also press Win+R, enter:
rstrui.exe
and press Enter.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers, or updates. Microsoft’s System Restore guide explains the process.
Fix 9: Perform an in-place Windows reinstall
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, and System Restore all fail, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place reinstall.
Start the installer from within Windows and choose:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep personal files and apps
Do not select an option that removes apps or personal files unless you have made a complete backup and intend to reset the installation. Use Microsoft’s Windows installation media guidance.
If the error appears before sign-in, use Windows Recovery Environment. The drive letter may differ there:
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow /offbootdir:D: /offwindir:D:Windows
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading wclpowrprof.dll from an unofficial DLL site can provide:
- Malware or a tampered file
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An incompatible dependency set
- A file that does not match WinSxS servicing metadata
Manual copying can also leave ownership, manifests, and component-store records inconsistent. There is no separate official Microsoft “wclpowrprof.dll runtime” package. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows repair, or matching Microsoft installation media instead.
FAQ
Is wclpowrprof.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and described as Windows Class Library. Its normal location is associated with Windows system files, not a random third-party download.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
There is no evidence that Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET installs this particular Windows component. Reinstalling those packages is not the default fix.
Why does the error mention a game?
The game may be the program that triggered Windows’ loader. That does not prove the game supplied the DLL. Repair Windows first, then repair the game if the error remains.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. A different Windows build or architecture can create a worse mismatch. Use component servicing or matching installation media.

What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC. If the problem continues, use Windows Update repair, System Restore, or an in-place reinstall.
