wcmapi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, so do not start by downloading a replacement DLL. The safest path is to repair Windows component storage with DISM, run System File Checker, and then repair the application that reports the error.

- The error appears in several programs or Windows features: Windows itself may have a missing or corrupted component. Start with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- Only one game or application fails: Repair or reinstall that program from its official installer. It may be looking for a private copy beside its executable.
- The problem began after an update, failed upgrade, cleanup, or disk problem: Treat it as Windows servicing or file-system damage and run the system repair sequence.
- Your antivirus recently quarantined a file: Check Protection History before restoring anything. Scan first if malware or tampering is possible.
- The message says “entry point not found” or “not designed to run on Windows”: Suspect a wrong architecture, mismatched build, corrupt file, or unsigned private copy rather than a simple missing-file error.
- The program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: Check whether it needs the 32-bit system copy in
SysWOW64. Do not replace it with a 64-bit file.
What wcmapi.dll does
wcmapi.dll is the Windows Connection Manager Client API DLL. Microsoft documents APIs used to manage connection profiles, connection cost, data-plan status, and related network properties, including WcmGetProfileList, WcmQueryProperty, WcmSetProfileList, and WcmSetProperty (Microsoft’s Wcmapi.h documentation).

The API is part of Windows rather than a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, .NET runtime, or ordinary third-party application component. Microsoft documents support beginning with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 (WcmQueryProperty requirements).
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%windir%System32wcmapi.dllfor 64-bit system components%windir%SysWOW64wcmapi.dllfor 32-bit components, where that architecture is present
The names are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. WOW64 redirects 32-bit programs to the appropriate directory. A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit substitute (Microsoft’s WOW64 guidance).
What the error wording means
Windows displays different loader messages depending on what failed:
- “wcmapi.dll is missing” or “was not found”: The loader could not find a usable copy in the expected Windows or application search locations.
- “Error loading wcmapi.dll” or “could not be loaded”: A copy was found, but Windows could not load it. Corruption, permissions, dependencies, or architecture can be involved.
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located in wcmapi.dll”: The application found a DLL, but it does not expose the API entry point the program expects. A mismatched Windows build or private copy is a common possibility.
- “wcmapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”: The file may be corrupt, unsigned, wrong for the process architecture, or incompatible with the installed Windows build.
The exact text varies by Windows release and by the application showing the loader error. The message alone does not identify which program owns the problem.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair its components
This is the most likely fix when the file is absent from the Windows system directories or multiple programs fail.
Install pending updates
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not immediately require it.
- Test the affected program again.
Updates can replace damaged protected files and repair servicing metadata. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM and System File Checker
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer and test the program.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft documents this order and these commands in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.

Repeating these commands without checking their results makes diagnosis difficult. If DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows Update or the component store may also be damaged. Use matching Windows installation media or another repair source that closely matches the installed edition and build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the matching repair source. Do not use an arbitrary Windows folder from another computer.
If SFC reports, “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them,” extract its relevant entries:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop and look for references to wcmapi.dll or related servicing failures. If the file still cannot be repaired, proceed to System Restore or a repair reinstall instead of copying a downloaded DLL.
Fix 2: Repair the application that triggers the error
A Windows component error can be exposed by one damaged application. The program may also ship a private DLL beside its executable, and that copy can be wrong even when the Windows copy is healthy.
First identify the parent program:
- Note the application name in the error dialog.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Check Processes and Startup apps for the same name.
- Right-click a matching process and select Open file location.
- Record the executable path.
- If the message appears briefly, check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and opening Windows Logs > Application.
- Also check Reliability Monitor by opening Start and searching for
reliability history.
Once identified, repair it from its official source:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose the menu button beside it.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Choose Repair, then test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download and install it again from the publisher’s official installer.
For a game, open its launcher and look for Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or a similar command. This restores files that belong to the game without replacing protected Windows files.

Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore wcmapi.dll. Those packages are generally unrelated to this Windows API DLL. Install a runtime only when the application’s own documentation or error message identifies that runtime as missing.
Fix 3: Check architecture and file identity
A wrong-architecture or private copy can produce an error even when a file with the right name exists.
Check the program architecture
Task Manager can show architecture on some Windows versions:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform or Architecture, if available.
- Check whether the failing process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the application’s documentation or installer. Restore the matching file through Windows servicing or the application’s installer. Do not copy a file from System32 to SysWOW64, or the reverse.
Check the DLL path and signature
In File Explorer, enter %windir%System32 in the address bar and look for wcmapi.dll. On 64-bit Windows, also check %windir%SysWOW64.
Right-click a file, select Properties, and inspect:
- Location, to confirm it is in an expected Windows directory or the application’s official folder
- Digital Signatures, to check whether it is signed by Microsoft
- Details, to review the file description and version information
Known historical Windows builds have used version values such as 10.0.10586.0, 10.0.14393.0, and 10.0.15063.0, but these are examples, not a complete current version list or download recommendation. File versions and sizes vary by Windows build.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Security software may have quarantined a damaged file, a falsely detected file, or a private application copy. Malware can also alter or replace system files.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the application or
wcmapi.dll. - If a file was quarantined, do not restore it automatically.
- Confirm that the path is an expected Windows or official application location and that the file has a valid Microsoft signature.
- If malware is possible, run a full scan before restoring anything.
Microsoft warns that allowing unsafe files creates a security risk. Use its Protection History instructions and broader virus and threat protection guidance.
Fix 5: Consider drivers only for broader network symptoms
wcmapi.dll concerns connection management, but a network-driver reinstall does not normally replace this Windows API DLL. Use Device Manager only when the broader problem includes failed network hardware, missing adapters, or connectivity errors.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart and test networking.
If the issue began after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available. For a manufacturer-specific driver, obtain it from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs and matching several versions. Why downloading or registering the DLL is unsafe
Do not download wcmapi.dll from an unverified DLL library or copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder as the default fix. A replacement can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, or malicious contents, and it can hide the servicing or application problem that caused the error.
There is also no verified Microsoft wcmapi.dll redistributable download. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, matching Microsoft installation media, and the affected program’s official installer.
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer (Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation). wcmapi.dll is a Windows API DLL, not an ordinary COM server, so running regsvr32 wcmapi.dll is generally irrelevant and may produce another entry-point error.

Fix 6: Use System Restore or repair reinstall
If the problem started immediately after a Windows update, failed upgrade, cleanup operation, driver change, or software removal, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier working state.

- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Restart and test the application.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without intentionally removing personal files. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the limitations.
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, or the file disappears again after repair, check drive health and Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System for storage or servicing errors. Test the application from another Windows account to identify possible profile damage.
As a later repair, use Windows’ option to reinstall the current version while preserving the appropriate files and settings. Follow Microsoft’s repair reinstall guidance. Back up important data first and read the retention choices carefully.
Prevention and final checks
After the repair:
- Restart Windows before retesting.
- Keep Windows and the affected application updated.
- Keep the application’s launcher verification feature available.
- Do not delete files from
System32orSysWOW64during cleanup. - Review antivirus detections before allowing quarantined files.
- Record the executable path, process architecture, Windows edition and build, and any Event Viewer error if the problem returns.
FAQ
Is wcmapi.dll safe?
The genuine Microsoft-signed copy in the expected Windows directory is a legitimate Windows component. A file with the same name in an unexpected folder should be investigated rather than trusted automatically.
Is it part of a game or a particular application?
No single game or application can be identified as the universal cause. Windows provides the API, while an application may call it or ship a private copy. Identify the parent executable before deciding whether Windows or the application needs repair.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. Those runtimes generally do not provide wcmapi.dll. Repair Windows first, then repair the application that reports the error.
Should I reinstall the network driver?
Only for a broader network-device problem. Driver reinstallation is not the normal method for restoring this DLL.
Should I run regsvr32 wcmapi.dll?
No. This Windows API DLL is not normally repaired by registration. Use DISM and SFC, or restore the application through its official installer.

Check the process architecture, the DLL’s path and Microsoft signature, and whether the application has a private copy. An entry-point or compatibility error often means the program loaded the wrong or mismatched file rather than finding no file at all.
