WD is now another option alongside Seagate for adding storage to an Xbox Series X|S without giving up the ability to play optimized games directly from the card. WD’s WD_BLACK C50 is listed in capacities up to 2TB; Xbox’s Seagate card lineup currently reaches 4TB. Neither official product page establishes a price winner, so the practical choice comes down to capacity, regional availability and the current price of comparable models.
What the WD_BLACK C50 adds to Xbox storage
The WD_BLACK C50 is an officially licensed NVMe expansion card for Xbox Series X|S. WD lists 512GB, 1TB and 2TB versions. Its data sheet says the card enables the same speed and performance as the console when playing games optimized for Series X|S, and the product materials cite Quick Resume support.

That positions the C50 as an alternative to the Seagate Storage Expansion Card, not as a conventional USB drive. The cards are designed to add storage that integrates with the console’s game-storage setup.

The performance descriptions are manufacturer and Xbox claims, not independent benchmark results. They do not establish a measurable speed advantage for either card.
Can you play Xbox Series X|S games from a USB drive?
Not all games can be played from ordinary external USB storage. Seagate says external drives can store games, but Series X|S-optimized titles must be transferred back to the console’s internal storage for gameplay. Its expansion card, by contrast, supports direct play; Seagate also says legacy games can be played from the card.
That makes the choice partly about convenience: use a proprietary expansion card if you want added storage for direct play of optimized games, or use an external USB drive for storing games and moving them back when needed. These are different storage options, not interchangeable versions of the same feature.

Which Xbox expansion card should you choose?
- Choose the WD_BLACK C50 if a 512GB, 1TB or 2TB capacity meets your needs and its current local price or availability is better for you.
- Choose Seagate if you want a 4TB option, or if a Seagate capacity offers the better current price or availability in your region.
- Compare matching capacities. Check the exact model, listed capacity, regional compatibility, current price and stock before buying. The official pages reviewed do not support a blanket claim that WD is cheaper.
What about games getting larger?
Storage pressure is a real practical concern for players managing multiple large games, but the official product materials cited here provide no representative install-size figure or measured growth rate. They do not support a specific claim about how quickly game sizes are increasing. Choose capacity based on your own library and willingness to uninstall, archive or transfer games.
Xbox lists November 2020 as the Seagate card’s release date. WD’s arrival as another officially licensed card option gives buyers a second brand to compare, while Seagate’s currently listed lineup provides the higher-capacity tier.
