The wdfres.dll error usually appears as “The program can’t start because wdfres.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because wdfres.dll was not found,” or “The specified module could not be found.”
wdfres.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework, or KMDF. It supports the common infrastructure used by hardware drivers, rather than belonging to the Visual C++ Redistributable. Microsoft documents WDF as a Windows driver framework that includes both KMDF and UMDF.

The application that displays the error may be a game, utility, or hardware control panel, but the underlying problem is often Windows corruption, a damaged driver installation, or a missing dependency.

Use this quick diagnosis before changing anything:
- Several programs, devices, or Windows features are failing: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- The error started after installing or updating hardware software: reinstall or roll back the affected driver.
- Only one game or application fails: repair, reinstall, or verify that program’s files.
- Your antivirus recently quarantined a system file: inspect quarantine, but restore the file only after confirming its Microsoft signature.
- The file exists but Windows says it is invalid or cannot load it: check its location, architecture, signature, and dependencies.
- The problem returns after every repair: investigate malware, storage errors, cleanup software, or broader Windows damage.
Do not start by downloading wdfres.dll from a DLL website. A replacement can have the wrong architecture, build, language, or be tampered with, and it does not repair the damaged driver or Windows component that caused the error.
#1 Best Overall
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Because wdfres.dll belongs to the Windows Driver Framework component set, Windows servicing is the safest first repair.
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program or device again.
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, use the Microsoft repair steps below before trying the update again. Microsoft’s Windows Update repair guidance covers failures caused by damaged update files and servicing components.
2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC may need as a source for replacing damaged system files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
A successful SFC result normally says that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it did not find any integrity violations. If SFC repairs files, restarting before testing is important because the repaired component may not be active until the next boot.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. Microsoft provides the complete procedure in its System File Checker instructions.
If DISM cannot find source files, use a matching Windows installation source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options. The source must closely match the installed Windows edition and build. Microsoft documents this process in Repair a Windows image.
When the manual process means repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version.

On many historical Windows installations, Microsoft placed the file here:
C:WindowsSystem32wdfres.dll
Do not treat that historical path as proof that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation uses the same file layout or version. Microsoft file inventories associate it with WDF alongside components such as Wdf01000.sys and Wdfldr.sys.
To check the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
wdfres.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
You can also open Properties and inspect the Details tab for company and product information. Do not rely on a filename alone. A file with the right name in an application folder can still be the wrong file.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility. A 32-bit program may use different redirection rules from a 64-bit program. Do not copy a file between these folders to force an application to start.
If the file exists but Windows reports “The specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency of the calling program or driver. The message does not always prove that wdfres.dll itself is absent.
4. Reinstall, update, or roll back the affected driver
A damaged driver package is especially likely when the error began after adding hardware, installing a GPU or audio driver, updating chipset software, or connecting a printer or USB device.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for devices with a yellow warning icon.
- Expand likely categories such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, System devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Printers.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Otherwise close Properties, right-click the device, and select Update driver.
- If updating does not help, select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer if Windows does not reinstall a working driver automatically.
Use the manufacturer’s official package for the exact device and Windows architecture. Avoid mixing files from different driver releases. WDF files work as part of a component set, so replacing only wdfres.dll is not a reliable driver repair.
If you are manually checking many devices and driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its free scan shows the results, while driver installation requires the full version.
Microsoft’s Device Manager driver guidance covers updating, uninstalling, and rolling back drivers.
5. Repair the program or verify its files
If Windows, Device Manager, and other programs work normally, the failing application may be damaged or incorrectly referencing a Windows component.
Try these steps in order:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset, where available, or reinstall the application from its official publisher.
For a game, use the launcher’s file verification or repair function. This replaces damaged application files without asking you to copy system DLLs manually. If only that game fails while Windows and other programs are healthy, reinstalling or verifying the game remains the definitive fix.
If the application installer itself reports that Windows components are missing, complete DISM and SFC first, then reinstall the application.

Security software can quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. It can also make a legitimate file appear missing after a mistaken detection.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Review detections involving
wdfres.dll, drivers, or the affected application. - Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar.
- Confirm that the file is Microsoft-signed and that the detection is demonstrably false.
- If the detection is unclear, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
- For suspected malware, run an offline scan and then repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
If a file disappears again after restoration, stop restoring it repeatedly. Investigate malware, a failing disk, or cleanup software instead.
7. Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. wdfres.dll is a Windows driver-framework resource component, not a normal COM plug-in that needs manual registration.
Running this command is therefore not the normal fix:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchregsvr32 wdfres.dll
It may return an error saying that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not prove that the file is corrupted. Microsoft describes regsvr32 as a registration utility, not a tool for repairing Windows system files.
8. Use recovery options for persistent failures
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, or the error returns immediately after repair, move to broader recovery steps.
System Restore
Use System Restore when the failure began after a driver, application, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key, type
Create a restore point, and open it. - Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed drivers or applications.
In-place Windows repair
An in-place repair installation can replace Windows components while preserving personal files and installed applications, provided the installation media and edition are appropriate. Back up important files first and follow Microsoft’s current Windows recovery instructions.
If the computer also shows disappearing files, crashes, or broader corruption, check drive health and back up important data before performing repeated repairs.

FAQ
Is wdfres.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows Driver Frameworks and is described as a Kernel Mode Driver Framework Resource. It is not normally a Visual C++ Redistributable file.
Is wdfres.dll a driver?
It is a supporting Windows component used by the driver framework. The actual failure may still be caused by a damaged GPU, audio, chipset, printer, USB, or other hardware driver package.
Can I download wdfres.dll separately?
There is no verified official standalone download package for this file. Restore it through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, recovery media, or the correct driver package instead.
Does regsvr32 wdfres.dll fix the error?
Normally, no. regsvr32 is for DLL registration and is not the correct repair method for this Windows framework resource.
What if the file is missing from System32?
Run DISM and SFC rather than copying a replacement from another computer. The correct file depends on the Windows build, architecture, and component set.
Why does only one program fail?
That often indicates application corruption, an incorrect dependency reference, or a damaged driver feature used by that program. Repair or verify the application after completing the Windows integrity checks.
Prevent the error from returning
Keep Windows updated, install drivers from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer, and create a restore point before major driver changes. Avoid registry cleaners and DLL download sites. When a game or application offers file verification, use it before replacing system files.
If Windows keeps losing repaired files, treat that as evidence of a deeper problem involving malware, storage health, cleanup software, or a damaged Windows installation rather than as a reason to download another copy of wdfres.dll.
