Closing and reopening the client is the first thing to do, and it is the only step the client itself suggests. If the error returns, there is no single confirmed cause or guaranteed fix. The steps below help you narrow down whether the problem is tied to one account, to a wider outage, or to something on your own setup, and they show where to escalate.
What the error means and how it shows up
The message appears when the client tries to create a lobby, typically before a queue or custom game starts. Players also describe the same problem as a Play button that stays greyed out, or simply as being unable to create a League of Legends lobby. These are all descriptions of one failure: the client cannot open a lobby session.
The wording itself does not tell you where the fault lies. Some players have reported that one account could create lobbies while their main account could not, which suggests an account-level difference. Other players have described the problem as broader, affecting several accounts or regions. These are community observations. Neither Riot Games nor any other official source has been found that explains this specific message, so the cause should be treated as unknown.
Step-by-step: what to try first
- Close the client completely. Use the client’s own exit option, then check that no League processes are still running. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, open the Details tab, and end any remaining LeagueClient.exe or LeagueClientUx.exe entries.
- Reopen the client and try once. Start the client from your normal shortcut and attempt to create the lobby again. Repeated restarts have not resolved every reported case, so if this fails, move on rather than cycling the client over and over.
- Check whether the problem follows the account. If you have a second account and can sign in on the same computer, try creating a lobby with it. If only one account is affected, the cause may be tied to that account. If every account fails on the same machine, the cause is more likely to be on your side or in a wider service issue. This is a diagnostic clue, not a workaround that is known to help.
- Look for other errors. Note whether the client also reports an update prompt, a connection problem, or a failed sign-in. Any of these may point to a connection or patching issue rather than a lobby-specific one.
- Check Riot’s service status for your region. Confirm whether Riot has posted an incident affecting League of Legends where you play. If you cannot find one, that does not rule out a problem on Riot’s side.
- Contact Riot Player Support if the error persists. Escalation is the prudent next step when the error keeps appearing across restarts. Support can review your account and report the issue; this is not a confirmed Riot-specific remedy.
Information to include when you report the problem
Support teams can act faster when the report is specific. Include the following:

- Your region and the server you normally play on
- The approximate time the problem started, and whether it began suddenly or after a patch or update
- Whether the problem affects one account or several accounts on the same computer
- The exact on-screen message, copied as shown
- The steps you already tried, including restarts and the result of each
- Any other error messages, such as connection or update prompts
This list reflects reasonable reporting practice. It is not a checklist published by Riot.
Steps not to rely on
Some players have posted other measures, including deleting game folders, disabling security software, changing DNS settings, buying networking equipment, and reinstalling the client repeatedly. The reports are inconsistent. Some players say these steps helped, others say they did not, and none of the sources establishes that they are safe or effective as a general fix. Reinstalling in particular has not been shown to solve this error reliably, and it takes time that is better spent on the escalation steps above. Deleting game files or changing security settings carries its own risks, so avoid these measures unless a trusted source gives a specific reason for them.

What is and is not established
- The quoted message is associated with League of Legends client lobby creation.
- Restarting the client is the suggestion the client itself gives, but it does not resolve every reported case.
- Some players report that repair or reinstall attempts did not help. This does not prove those steps never work, but it means reinstalling should not be expected to fix the problem.
- Account-specific and broader reports both exist, so the wording alone does not show that your PC or connection is at fault.
- No official Riot explanation or fix for this exact message has been found in the sources reviewed, and no current incident has been confirmed in connection with it.
