Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIn June 2013, Xbox chief Don Mattrick told E3 interviewer Geoff Keighley that Microsoft had “a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity, it’s called Xbox 360.” He made the remark while Xbox One’s planned internet requirements were drawing heavy criticism, and he pointed to Xbox 360 as the offline option for players with no connection. The headline shortens that wording, so the exact quotation and its context matter if you want to repeat it accurately.
What Mattrick said, and when
The remark was reported by Engadget on June 12, 2013, in an article by Daniel Cooper. XboxAchievements published its own account the same day by Lee Bradley, framing the exchange the same way: a response to complaints about Xbox One’s online requirements. Both reports place the comments in an E3 interview with Keighley, during the week of the show.

Mattrick’s point was narrow. He presented Xbox 360 as the device for people who lack internet access. As an illustration, he cited a person serving on a nuclear submarine, someone who could have difficulty connecting at all. The reports support that reading of the comments; they do not describe a broader product comparison between the two consoles.

Because the headline is a paraphrase, repeating it as a direct quote is inaccurate. The reported wording differs in a few places, and each phrasing has a different use.

| “fortunately, we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity, it’s called Xbox 360” | Engadget’s report of the interview, attributed to Mattrick | Direct quotation. Use this wording when quoting Mattrick. |

Engadget is the reference for direct quotes here. XboxAchievements reports the same exchange under a headline with similar phrasing, but for quotation purposes the Engadget wording above is the one to use.
The context: Xbox One’s internet requirements
The comments came during a period when Xbox One’s connectivity rules were the central complaint about the console. Mattrick’s remark was a direct answer to that criticism, positioning Xbox 360 as the alternative for people who could not meet those requirements. Microsoft changed its online requirements before Xbox One launched in November 2013, so the 2013 remarks describe a policy that was in flux at the time rather than the final launch terms.

What the remark does and does not establish
- It establishes that Microsoft, in June 2013, described Xbox 360 as an offline device for people without connectivity.
- It does not establish that Xbox 360 could replace Xbox One in features, online services, or game availability. The reports address connectivity only.
- It is not a lasting company policy statement. It was an interview comment, and no official Microsoft policy document on the topic is cited in these reports.
Xbox 360 today
Xbox 360 is legacy hardware in 2026. If you are considering buying one, the 2013 remark tells you nothing about current availability, used prices, console condition, repair or service access, or which games still work as intended. Those points need to be checked against current listings and Microsoft’s own support pages before you buy. Physical Xbox 360 games with offline modes are a separate question; individual titles should be verified before you rely on their offline features.

Sources and limits of the record
The quotations above come from two contemporaneous reports from June 12, 2013: Engadget’s article by Daniel Cooper and XboxAchievements’ article by Lee Bradley. No named statistic on console sales, internet access, or audience size is attached to the remark, and none is offered here. The statement is best understood as a dated interview comment about a 2013 debate, not a current description of either console.
