A GameSpot game listing, accessed October 8, 2026, now includes PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2 among the platforms and gives December 6, 2024 as the game’s first release date. What Phil Spencer said about the business
In a Gamescom 2024 interview, Spencer said: “We run a business. It’s definitely true inside of Microsoft the bar is high for us in terms of the delivery that we have to give back to the company, because we get a level of support from the company that’s just amazing in what we’re able to go do.” The quotation is transcribed in Ars Technica’s report; the report links to the original Xbox On interview video.

His point was that Xbox is accountable to Microsoft, which backs the gaming division, and must deliver value in return. Spencer also described pressure across the games industry and a search for growth, while noting changes in how games are made and distributed. He said Xbox had released four games on other platforms earlier in 2024 and that the company would learn from those releases. These remarks offer context for a broader willingness to distribute games beyond Xbox, not a disclosed accounting of this title’s port.
Why put an Xbox game on PlayStation?
The strategic tension is between keeping games exclusive to a platform and widening their potential reach by releasing them elsewhere. Spencer’s comments support the view that Microsoft saw broader distribution as a strategy worth pursuing while Xbox remained responsible for delivering value to its parent company. The original plan also shows that the platforms did not launch simultaneously: Xbox and Windows were first, with PS5 announced for a later window.

That context should not be mistaken for proof that a particular financial outcome prompted the PS5 release. The cited reports do not provide a title-specific, independently verified revenue, profit, or player-growth figure. Spencer made general comments about players and the business, but they are attributed remarks, not an independently established measurement of this port’s results. GameSpot’s report cites Microsoft’s $75.4 billion Activision Blizzard acquisition figure as background; that number is not evidence of the Indiana Jones release’s performance.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks; GameSpot’s listing also names Microsoft as a publisher. In a pre-release preview based on a short hands-off demo and developer comments, Ars Technica described a 1937 adventure set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Its account covers exploration, clue photography, environmental puzzles, stealth, hand-to-hand combat, and use of the whip in traversal and combat.
