Welcome to the Xbox $360 Era: What The Verge Meant

“Xbox $360” was Tom Warren’s 2025 shorthand for an expensive new phase of Xbox—not an Xbox 360 retrospective. The headline’s $360 came from annualizing a reported $29.99 monthly Game Pass Ultimate price.

“Xbox $360” is a 2025 headline pun—not a story about the Xbox 360 console. In The Verge, Tom Warren used the phrase to describe Xbox’s more expensive direction: the article’s reported $29.99 monthly Game Pass Ultimate price annualizes to $360, alongside Xbox console price increases and a broader push toward PC and cloud gaming. Those prices are historical figures from Warren’s October 2, 2025 article, not verified October 2026 prices.

What does “Xbox $360” mean?

The number refers to the annualized cost of Game Pass Ultimate at the price Warren reported: $29.99 a month multiplied by 12 months equals $359.88, rounded to $360. It does not refer to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console. Warren’s article, “Welcome to the Xbox $360 era,” was published October 2, 2025, with the subtitle “Microsoft’s Xbox strategy hits price hikes for consoles and subscriptions.”

The arithmetic is a headline device, not an annual-plan quote: $360 represents twelve months at the reported monthly rate. Warren also compared that annualized sum with the Xbox Series S’s $299 debut price.

What changed for Xbox players?

Warren’s central point was that Xbox was becoming more expensive as Microsoft adjusted subscriptions and hardware pricing. His article reported these figures as of October 2025:

Figure What Warren reported Context
$29.99 per month; $360 annualized Price of the top Game Pass tier at the time The $360 figure is $29.99 multiplied by 12, not a separately verified annual plan price.
$299 Xbox Series S debut price Used as a comparison with a year at the reported Game Pass Ultimate monthly rate.
$150 over six months Increase in Xbox Series X pricing Reported by Warren in 2025; no current price is established here.
$1,000 Price of the top Xbox Ally X handheld model Warren cited it as an example of Microsoft’s broader device direction.

These are the figures in Warren’s 2025 article, not a current price list. The material available here does not establish official Xbox prices, plan names, benefits, or regional availability as of October 8, 2026. Check Xbox’s official store and plan details for the market where you live before making a purchase decision.

Why did Game Pass’s price matter so much?

Warren traced the significance of Game Pass to the value promise Microsoft had made earlier: in 2018, the company said its own Xbox games would arrive on the service on day one. That helped make immediate access to first-party releases a defining part of Game Pass’s appeal. In his account, later tier changes and changes to access for day-one console games altered that value proposition as prices rose.

The distinction for players is practical: the headline price alone does not tell you whether a particular tier includes the releases and benefits you care about. Those terms can change, and this article’s historical figures do not establish what any current plan includes.

How Warren connected the price increases to Xbox’s strategy

Warren framed the increases as part of a wider strategic transition. He argued that Microsoft faced pressure to find growth after agreeing to a $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, while expanding Xbox beyond traditional console hardware into PC and cloud gaming. That is Warren’s analysis of the business pressures and strategic choices—not a demonstrated causal explanation for each price change.

His discussion also reflects uncertainty about the role of consoles in Xbox’s future. The reported $1,000 top Xbox Ally X model served as an example of the company’s reach into handheld PC gaming; it was not evidence that the device replaces Xbox consoles or that every player should move to a handheld.

What the “Xbox $360 era” headline does—and does not—tell you

  • It does: summarize Warren’s argument that Xbox was entering a pricier, strategically uncertain period, with higher subscription and console costs and a wider device focus.
  • It does not: describe an Xbox 360 revival, establish today’s Game Pass or hardware prices, or prove that subscription changes were caused by the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
  • For a buying decision: compare the current annual cost and day-one-release access of subscription tiers, then weigh a console, PC, or handheld by its upfront cost and the kind of play you want. The October 2025 article is commentary, not a current buyer’s guide.
