Weird West is a top-down action RPG with immersive-sim elements set in a supernatural Wild West. The reviews we cover, most of them from its March 2022 launch, praise its reactive choices, linked character stories and setting, while faulting its murky visuals, twin-stick combat controls and early bugs. It suits players who want a choice-driven Western and can tolerate a hard-to-read screen and clunky controls.

- Release date: March 31, 2022, per PC Gamer.

Is Weird West open world?
Not in the conventional sense. Windows Central describes the game as a large map made up of smaller location-based slices, with random events happening between them. Its reviewer specifically cautions that it is not an open-world game with one continuous map. Expect to travel between distinct areas rather than roam a seamless landscape.
The five protagonists and their linked stories
The campaign follows five protagonists, each with their own journey: the Bounty Hunter, Pigman, Protector, Werewolf and Oneirist. The official site introduces them through individual character pages. Rather than following one hero throughout, the five journeys build a wider story. IGN’s review highlights this five-story format as one of the game’s defining features, and Windows Central praised how the branching story rewards the world’s linked threads.

What critics criticize
Visual readability and combat controls (PC Gamer)
PC Gamer found the visual style murky and said it was hard to read the scene. It also described the twin-stick controls as clunky, and said the combat is less slick than the immersive sims it resembles. The same reviewer compared some encounter design to Dishonored and Prey, but said Weird West’s abilities do not combine as deeply as the powers in Dishonored 2.

Launch-era visuals and performance (Windows Central, Xbox review)
Windows Central’s launch-era Xbox review reported fuzzy visuals, performance issues and small bugs. Its reviewer still found the world and branching story worthwhile. These observations describe the 2022 launch build, not necessarily the current version.
Loot management and bugs (IGN)
IGN’s review description also criticizes loot management as dull and mentions bugs.
A critic’s verdict in one line
PC Gamer reviewer Tom Sykes wrote: “Look past the murky aesthetic and clunky combat: this is an exciting fusion of immersive sim and CRPG.” This is one reviewer’s opinion, not an official developer statement.

Is it like Dishonored?
Partly. Readers who enjoy Dishonored’s stealth-first encounters will recognize the approach, but PC Gamer’s review says the action is less polished and the abilities combine less deeply. Think of Weird West as a Western-flavoured cousin of immersive sims, with a stronger RPG layer and rougher presentation.
