wer.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded. This file is a genuine Microsoft Windows Error Reporting library, not a Visual C++ Redistributable file or an ordinary third-party game DLL.

You may see wording such as:

The program can't start because wer.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

wer.dll was not found
Cannot find wer.dll
The specified module wer.dll could not be found

Bad Image:
...wer.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

The exact wording depends on Windows and the application displaying the message.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list before changing anything:

  • Several applications fail, or Windows features are also unstable: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
  • The problem began after antivirus cleanup: inspect Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
  • Only one application or game fails: repair or verify that application, then reinstall it from its publisher.
  • The error appeared after an update, forced shutdown, or disk problem: complete Windows Update and repair system files.
  • The message names another DLL as well as wer.dll: investigate that dependency instead of assuming wer.dll is the root cause.
  • The error appears in WerFault.exe: Windows Error Reporting itself may be failing, so start with Windows repair.
  • The program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: check both the application architecture and the System32/SysWOW64 paths.

Do not download wer.dll from a random DLL website. The file may have the wrong Windows build, architecture, or signature, and replacing a protected system file can introduce malware or hide the actual problem.

What wer.dll does and where Windows keeps it

Microsoft documents Wer.dll as the library required by the Windows Error Reporting API. WER handles reports for application crashes, hangs, kernel faults, and related failures. See Microsoft’s Windows Error Reporting overview and WerReportCreate requirements.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:

%SystemRoot%System32wer.dll
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64wer.dll

System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system files used through Windows’ file-system redirection for 32-bit applications. On 32-bit Windows, the normal system copy is in System32. Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation explains this behavior.

A file missing from one location does not automatically mean you should copy a file from the other. The architecture must match the process loading it.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files

This is the safest first repair when more than one program is affected or the file is absent from its Windows directory.

Step 1: Install pending updates

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install everything offered.
  5. Restart Windows, even if it does not demand a restart.
  6. Test the affected application.

If Windows Update itself fails, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.

Step 2: Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies the protected files used by SFC. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

Step 3: Run SFC

In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the application again.

A successful repair may report that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error disappears after the restart, do not manually replace wer.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repairing the component store and system files by hand can mean repeating commands, reading logs, and determining which Windows component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but it is optional and not required for this fix.

If DISM cannot find repair files

Use a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example path with the actual trusted source. It must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. An unmatched source can fail to repair the system correctly. See Microsoft’s repair-source instructions.

If SFC still reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run DISM again with the matching source. If the problem continues, consider System Restore or Windows recovery rather than copying a DLL from another computer.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software may remove or quarantine a file after a scan, threat removal, cleanup operation, or suspected unauthorized replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections from when the error began.
  5. Expand a detection that identifies wer.dll.
  6. Check its path, detection details, and source before taking action.

Do not restore a file merely because its name is wer.dll. If the path, signature, or detection details are unclear, leave it quarantined and run DISM followed by SFC. Run a full security scan as well. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how quarantined files are handled.

If a verified Windows copy is restored, test the application and then investigate why security software removed it. A repeated detection may indicate tampering or malware rather than a simple missing-file problem.

Fix 3: Repair the application that fails

If Windows works normally and only one program or game reports wer.dll, the application installation may be damaged or may be requesting a private dependency incorrectly.

For a Microsoft Store or supported desktop app

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its More menu and choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the application again.
  8. If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset.

Reset may remove the application’s local settings or stored data, so use it only after Repair.

For a conventional program

Use the program’s own Repair, Verify, or Verify integrity of game files option. If it has no repair option:

  1. Close the program and its launcher.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Select the program and choose Uninstall, if supported.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Download the installer from the application’s publisher or reinstall through its official launcher.
  6. Install any updates offered by that publisher.
  7. Test the program before adding modifications or third-party files.

Do not replace the Windows copy of wer.dll with a file bundled inside an application. If the application’s official installer repeatedly fails, record its installation or crash log and contact the publisher.

Fix 4: Check architecture and other dependencies

A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows normally uses the 32-bit system environment, while a 64-bit program needs the 64-bit library. A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.

Check the following:

  • Is the failing application 32-bit or 64-bit?
  • Is the reported path System32 or SysWOW64?
  • Does the error also name VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, or another dependency?
  • Did you install the application from an official source for the correct Windows architecture?

wer.dll does not come from the Visual C++ Redistributable. Reinstalling Visual C++ is not the default fix unless the error specifically names a Visual C++ runtime. If it does, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable packages.

If the issue began after a graphics, storage, chipset, or other hardware change, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and check for appropriate driver updates. You can also right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand the relevant device category, right-click the device, and select Update driver. Device Manager is useful for identifying a failed device, but it does not repair wer.dll itself.

When Windows driver hunting means checking many devices and matching each package to the correct hardware, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs driver installation, but it is optional and not a substitute for repairing the application or Windows.

Fix 5: Check Windows features only when the failure is broader

Windows Features are not a normal source for wer.dll, but they can help identify whether a wider Windows component problem exists.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Note whether the Windows Features window opens normally.
  3. Do not randomly disable or enable features to replace wer.dll.
  4. Close the window and use DISM and SFC for system-file repair.

If the Windows Features dialog itself fails, or several built-in Windows components are broken, treat the issue as broader servicing damage and continue with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

Why regsvr32 wer.dll is usually wrong

Do not use this as a routine fix:

regsvr32 wer.dll

regsvr32 registers COM or ActiveX DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. It does not restore an ordinary Windows runtime library or repair the component store. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation and self-registration guidance describe its intended use.

Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL is a self-registering COM component. That is not the normal role of wer.dll.

If the error remains after repair

Collect these details before escalating:

  • The full error text
  • The application or game name
  • Whether WerFault.exe appears in the message
  • The reported file path
  • Whether one account or every Windows account is affected
  • Whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Your Windows version and build
  • Recent updates, antivirus actions, forced shutdowns, or disk errors
  • The application’s crash, installation, or launcher log

If only your current account is affected, create a temporary local Windows user and test the program there. A new profile can distinguish profile or application settings from system-wide corruption; it does not mean wer.dll belongs in the user profile.

If disk errors are suspected after storage warnings or repeated file corruption, an administrator can run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
chkdsk /f C:

Windows may schedule the check for the next restart. Use this only when disk problems are plausible, not as a default response to every missing-DLL message.

For persistent corruption, use Windows recovery options, System Restore, a repair reinstall, or a full recovery procedure appropriate to your backup situation.

Prevent the error from returning

  • Keep Windows updates current.
  • Use the application’s official updater or launcher.
  • Do not use registry cleaners or DLL replacement utilities.
  • Leave protected Windows files in their original locations.
  • Review antivirus detections instead of blindly restoring quarantined files.
  • Keep reliable backups before major system repairs.
  • Do not copy wer.dll from another PC, another Windows edition, or a DLL download site.

FAQ

Is wer.dll safe?

The genuine Microsoft copy is a Windows Error Reporting component. The filename alone does not prove that an arbitrary copy is genuine, so verify its location and digital signature when investigating a quarantined or suspicious file.

Is wer.dll part of Visual C++?

No. It is a Windows system DLL. Install a Visual C++ package only when the error identifies a Visual C++ runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download wer.dll?

No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, antivirus review, or the affected application’s official repair process.

Why does only one game or application fail?

That usually points toward damaged application files, an incorrect private dependency, or a launcher problem. Verify or reinstall that program before changing Windows system files.

Why does the message say “not designed to run on Windows”?

That wording can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a damaged dependency. It does not prove that wer.dll itself is the underlying cause.

Can I copy wer.dll into System32?

Not as a normal consumer repair. Use trusted Windows servicing tools or a matching recovery source. Manual copying can leave Windows with the wrong build, architecture, or signature.
