wercplsupport.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ runtime or a normal game DLL. If Windows reports that it is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows servicing files first with DISM and SFC instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
wercplsupport.dll belongs to Windows Error Reporting and the older Problem Reports and Solutions interface. Microsoft describes Windows Error Reporting as the infrastructure that collects information about application and system failures and can provide solutions.

The related service is named wercplsupport, with the display name Problem Reports and Solutions Control Panel Support. It is hosted through svchost.exe and is normally configured for Manual startup, meaning that seeing the service stopped is not automatically a problem.
Its historical system location is:
%WinDir%System32wercplsupport.dll
Public records associate this component with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and corresponding Windows Server releases. File versions, sizes, and exact availability vary by Windows release and servicing level, so old Windows 7 metadata should not be treated as universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 data.

Microsoft’s background information is available in its Windows Error Reporting documentation and service documentation.
Common symptoms and what they suggest
The wording varies by Windows version, application, and failure point. Reported variants include:
- “The program can’t start because wercplsupport.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “wercplsupport.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find wercplsupport.dll.”
- “Error loading wercplsupport.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wercplsupport.dll was not found.”
- “wercplsupport.dll could not be loaded.”
These are reported error variants, not guaranteed Microsoft diagnostic templates. A message naming this DLL also does not prove that the file itself is the root cause. Windows may be reporting a damaged component store, a missing dependency, a bad service configuration, or broader system corruption.

| The problem began after an update | Suspect interrupted or failed component servicing |
| Security software recently removed a file | Check Protection history before restoring anything |
| The message appears only in an old virtual machine | Confirm that machine’s Windows generation before using current repair options |

Before repairing, note whether the issue began after a Windows update, cleanup utility, antivirus action, failed repair, disk problem, or malware cleanup. That timing often identifies the correct branch.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart
Start with Windows’ own pending repairs.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Reproduce the original error.
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions if the update process is unfamiliar.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly install unrelated runtimes while Windows system files are damaged.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair path for a missing or corrupted wercplsupport.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It may appear to pause for a while.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the action that produced the DLL error.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source for protected files. See Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker guidance.
The SFC result tells you what happened:
- ** did not find any integrity violations**: Windows did not find protected-file corruption, so investigate the event that triggered the message.
- found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If it still fails, move to the recovery options below.
- DISM cannot find source files: use a matching Microsoft installation source with the documented
/Sourceand/LimitAccessoptions. The source must match the Windows edition and build; do not paste in an arbitrary path.
Manually hunting through system folders and repeating commands without knowing what changed can make this diagnosis tedious. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing what it identifies; repair actions are handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than a substitute for Microsoft’s DISM and SFC process.
Fix 3: Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined it
A security product may have removed or isolated a system file, although quarantine is not established as a common cause specifically for wercplsupport.dll.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and expand any item related to the Windows system directory.
- Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
Do not restore a quarantined file merely because its filename looks familiar. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine detection can expose the device to malware. Prefer DISM and SFC, which restore protected Windows files through servicing, rather than copying back an isolated file.
If the file is outside the normal Windows directory, has an invalid Microsoft signature, or appears alongside an unexpected service, run a current Microsoft Defender scan and investigate the system as a possible malware or unauthorized-modification case. Microsoft explains these entries in its Protection History documentation.
Fix 4: Verify the path and signature
Use File Explorer to check whether the file exists at:
C:WindowsSystem32wercplsupport.dll
The Windows directory may use a different drive or folder name, so %WinDir%System32 is the safer reference.
If the file exists:
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
- Check the Details tab for the file description and company information.
- Do not assume that presence alone proves the file is genuine.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system binaries. The folder name does not mean every file there is 32-bit. Do not copy a supposed 32-bit replacement into SysWOW64 without build-specific evidence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A copy in an application folder, Downloads, or a temporary directory is not a safe replacement for the Windows-serviced copy. Do not copy the DLL from another computer unless it matches the same Windows edition, architecture, build, language context, and verified system state. Even then, DISM and SFC are the supported repair path.
Fix 5: Check the service without forcing it to run
You can confirm the service configuration, but do not change it simply because it is stopped.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Problem Reports and Solutions Control Panel Support.
- Open its properties.
- Confirm that its service name is
wercplsupport. - Note the startup type and current status.
Manual startup is expected for an on-demand service. Do not set it to Automatic unless a specific Windows diagnostic or Microsoft support instruction requires that change.
Fix 6: Do not install unrelated runtimes
wercplsupport.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET component. Installing those packages is not the normal fix for this Windows file.

Likewise, regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A missing or damaged Windows service component should be repaired through DISM and SFC, not registered manually.
Do not download wercplsupport.dll from a random DLL site. An isolated download can contain malware, belong to the wrong Windows build or architecture, carry an invalid signature, and leave the underlying component-store problem unresolved. There is no official Microsoft standalone wercplsupport.dll download package identified for this repair.
Fix 7: Repair Windows through recovery options
If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, choose the least destructive recovery method that fits the machine.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 versions:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now, if available.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart and test again.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when offered by the system.
Recommended Free Tools
System Restore
Use System Restore if the error began after a known software change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review affected programs.
- Confirm the restore and restart.
System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. It does not replace a backup.
In-place reinstall
If no restore point exists and Windows remains corrupted, use matching Microsoft installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important files first. Start setup from within Windows and choose the option to keep personal files and applications when it is offered.
For broader recovery choices, see Microsoft’s recovery options and installation-media guidance.
Drivers and Device Manager
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not the usual owner of wercplsupport.dll, but a driver failure can coincide with system corruption or an update problem. Only update drivers when Event Viewer, Reliability Monitor, or Device Manager identifies a related device.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category named in the error or event.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available. Avoid replacing unrelated drivers just because the DLL message appeared.
Finding which of many installed drivers is stale can take longer than the actual repair. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan identifying what it finds; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it remains optional when Device Manager or the hardware manufacturer already provides the needed driver.
If the error persists
Collect evidence before making more changes:
- The exact error text
- The full path shown in the message
- Windows edition, version, and build
- Whether the problem occurs during startup or only with a particular application
- Event Viewer entries from Windows Logs > Application and System
- Reliability Monitor entries from the day the issue began
- The final DISM result
- The final SFC result
- Any Microsoft Defender Protection History entry
- Whether the file exists and whether its signature is valid
To open Reliability Monitor, search for View reliability history from Start. If the error occurs only in an old Windows virtual machine, identify that guest operating system first. Current Windows 11 repair instructions may not apply to an older guest.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but the error remains, restart and run SFC once more. Then check whether the reported failure is actually caused by another missing dependency or by a damaged application. The name in a DLL message is not always the first file that failed to load.
