wersvc.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component used by the Windows Error Reporting Service, also called WerSvc. If Windows says wersvc.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file helps Windows collect information about application crashes, hangs, kernel faults, and related failures. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX component, or normal third-party application library.

wersvc.dll version and location
| Example version | Architecture | Approximate size | Windows family |
|---|---|---|---|
10.0.10586.0 |
64-bit | 0.14 MB | Windows 10 version 1511-era files |
6.0.6001.18145 |
64-bit | 0.12 MB | Windows Vista and Server 2008 SP1-era files |
These are examples, not a complete compatibility list. The correct version depends on your Windows edition, build, architecture, language, servicing branch, and installed updates.
On 64-bit Windows, check these locations:
C:WindowsSystem32wersvc.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64wersvc.dll
System32 contains the native system files. SysWOW64 can contain the 32-bit system files used by 32-bit programs. Do not assume that copying either file into an application directory will solve the problem.

What the error means
You may see messages such as:
The program can't start because wersvc.dll is missing from your computer.
wersvc.dll was not found.
Error loading wersvc.dll. The specified module could not be found.
The code execution cannot proceed because wersvc.dll was not found.
These are generic Windows loader messages. They do not prove that the application displaying the message installed wersvc.dll, and “the specified module could not be found” can sometimes mean that a dependency is missing rather than the named file itself.
The error can be caused by:
- A damaged or missing Windows component
- An interrupted Windows update
- Antivirus quarantine
- Disk or system-file corruption
- A damaged application or incorrect application dependency
- A 32-bit and 64-bit architecture mismatch
- Malware or tampering
- A startup utility, installer, or script trying to load the file incorrectly
Start by verifying the Windows copy before repairing the program that reports the error.
Step 1: Check the file and Windows service
Check whether the files exist
- Press Win + R.
- Type
cmd. - Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
- Select Yes in the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
dir "%windir%System32wersvc.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64wersvc.dll"
If a file exists, Command Prompt displays its path, size, and modified date. If it does not exist, you will see a message that the file was not found.
Do not treat a missing SysWOW64 copy as proof of a problem on every installation. The important question is whether the copy required by Windows and the failing process is present and healthy.
Inspect WerSvc
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sc.exe qc WerSvc
sc.exe query WerSvc
The service is normally associated with Windows service infrastructure and hosted through svchost.exe. A stopped service is not automatically an error because Windows services can use manual or trigger-based startup.
Pay attention to unusual service paths. A service configuration that points outside the Windows directory deserves investigation.
Check the Windows build
Press Win + R, enter:
winver
Press Enter and record the Windows edition and build. This matters because a file from a different Windows release may have the wrong version, architecture, or servicing relationship.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Verify the Microsoft signature
Open PowerShell as administrator and run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32wersvc.dll"
A genuine Windows copy should have a valid Microsoft signature. Interpret the signature together with the file location. A file is not safe merely because it is named wersvc.dll.
If the file is in a temporary folder, user-profile directory, download folder, or unusual executable directory, do not replace it manually. Scan the system and continue with Windows repair.
Step 2: Install updates and restart
Windows servicing is the safest way to obtain a missing or corrected system component.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program or action that produced the error.
If the failure began immediately after an update, note the update date and build before making further changes. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so ordinary updates may not be available to every Windows 10 installation in 2026 unless it has an applicable support arrangement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair path when wersvc.dll is missing, corrupt, unsigned in the expected location, or absent after an update.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It may appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window while it is working.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC checks protected Windows files and attempts to restore damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as its repair source.
Restart Windows after both commands complete, then test the original program again.
Recommended Free Tools
If DISM reports that repair files could not be found, use a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a genuine repair source that matches the installed Windows version closely. Do not use an arbitrary ISO or another Windows release.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting for damaged components and do not know what changed. Its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the official first-line repair.
If SFC cannot repair the file
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them:
- Restart the computer.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Check the CBS log for details.
- Try a closely matching repair source.
- Consider System Restore or Windows repair options if the problem remains.
Do not copy wersvc.dll from another computer. Even computers with the same Windows edition can differ in build, architecture, language, and servicing level.
Step 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a genuine system file, or it may detect a suspicious copy outside the normal Windows directory.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
wersvc.dll. - Expand the detection and check the file path.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The path is the expected Windows system directory.
- The file has a valid Microsoft signature.
- The detection is confidently identified as a false positive.
- The system is not showing other signs of infection.
Do not restore an unsigned or strangely located file simply because its filename is correct. If the detection appears credible, run a full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan and repair Windows through DISM and SFC instead.
Step 5: Repair the program that displays the error
If the Windows copy exists, has a valid signature, and Windows passes its integrity checks, the problem may belong to the program that reports the message.

For a Microsoft Store app
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset, if available.
Resetting can remove application data, so use it only after trying Repair.
For a desktop application
Use the program’s own installer or Windows uninstall process:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select Uninstall, if no Repair option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or reinstall the application only from its publisher or official distribution channel.
- Test it before copying any DLL manually.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Scan and repair, or equivalent file-checking function. A damaged game installation should be repaired with the launcher, not by placing a Windows system DLL in the game folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the application’s installer or manifest specifically identifies a private dependency, follow the publisher’s documented repair procedure. Do not assume that Photoshop, Skype, a particular game, or a runtime installed wersvc.dll merely because the error appeared while that application was starting.
Step 6: Consider 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not use interchangeable DLL files.
On 64-bit Windows:
- Native 64-bit Windows components are generally under
System32. - 32-bit system components may be under
SysWOW64. - A 32-bit program cannot use an arbitrary 64-bit replacement.
- A 64-bit program cannot be repaired with a random 32-bit copy.
Check the failing program’s architecture through its documentation or publisher support information. Avoid guessing based only on the folder name. The safest fix is to repair Windows and reinstall the application using its correct installer.
Step 7: Update a driver only when the timing points to one
A driver is not the normal owner of wersvc.dll, so Device Manager is not a first-line repair for this file. Use it when the error began after a graphics, storage, chipset, or other driver change, or when Device Manager shows a related warning.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the suspected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the driver provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of many installed drivers may be stale instead of making you compare versions manually. Its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional aid, not as a substitute for repairing wersvc.dll.
If the issue started immediately after a driver update, the Roll Back Driver button in the same Properties window may be more appropriate than installing another version.
Step 8: Use System Restore when the failure is recent
System Restore is useful when the problem began after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or software installation.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files intact. It does not guarantee that every DLL problem will be corrected, so use Windows repair or recovery options if the error continues.
What not to do
Do not download wersvc.dll from a random DLL website
An arbitrary download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows build, or a modified file. It can also hide the actual cause, such as component-store corruption or antivirus removal.
There is no normal standalone Microsoft wersvc.dll download package. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or Windows recovery instead.
Do not copy the DLL into the application folder
This can create a private copy with the wrong version and cause Windows to load it instead of the protected system component. Copying into System32 can also conflict with Windows Resource Protection and servicing.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. wersvc.dll is a service library loaded through WerSvc and svchost.exe, not a normal COM or ActiveX DLL.

Do not reinstall runtimes without evidence
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET repairs are not first-line fixes for wersvc.dll. Use them only when the affected application independently reports a missing runtime component.
Windows Features also does not normally restore this service DLL. Enabling or disabling unrelated features can add confusion without repairing the underlying Windows component.
FAQ
Is wersvc.dll safe?
A genuine copy in a Windows system directory with a valid Microsoft signature is normally legitimate. The filename alone is not proof of safety. Verify its path, signature, service configuration, and scan results.
Recommended Free Tools
Does wersvc.dll belong to a particular game or application?
It is a Windows Error Reporting Service component. An application may trigger the error while starting or crashing, but that does not prove the application installed the file. If only one program fails, repair or reinstall that program after checking Windows integrity.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. wersvc.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime file. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC first, then investigate any separate runtime message from the affected application.
Should I start or stop WerSvc?
Starting or stopping the service does not restore a missing or damaged DLL. A service can also be stopped under normal manual or trigger-based configuration. Repair the Windows component instead.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
The file may be corrupt, unsigned, the wrong architecture, or missing a dependency. Check its signature, run DISM and SFC, verify the application installation, and record the exact executable path that produced the message.

What information should I collect for further troubleshooting?
Record the exact error text, failing executable path, Windows edition and build, file location, signature result, sc.exe output for WerSvc, and any relevant Event Viewer entry. The failing executable is often more useful than the DLL name alone.
