wevtfwd.dll errors may appear as “The program can’t start because wevtfwd.dll is missing from your computer,” “wevtfwd.dll was not found,” or “Error loading wevtfwd.dll.” wevtfwd.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, game, or ordinary third-party application file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching situation:
- The file is missing, corrupt, or Windows reports a system-file error: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- The problem began after Windows Update or a failed servicing operation: install pending updates, restart, then repair the component store.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: verify its path and Microsoft signature before restoring anything.
- The DLL exists but event forwarding does not work: troubleshoot WinRM, Windows Event Collector, subscriptions, and network access.
- You use Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008-era software: check the official Windows Management Framework package for that operating system and architecture.
- You found the file outside a Windows directory: do not replace it automatically. Scan it and verify its signature first.
- You were told to run
regsvr32: do not use it for this DLL. It is a WinRM plug-in, not a normal self-registering ActiveX or COM component.
Do not begin by downloading wevtfwd.dll from a DLL archive. The safest repair restores the Windows component that owns the file.

What wevtfwd.dll does
The file is the WS-Management Event Forwarding Plug-in. Windows Remote Management, usually called WinRM, loads this native plug-in to support Windows Event Forwarding operations. Microsoft lists the Event Forwarding plug-in among the default WS-Management plug-ins in its WSMan provider documentation.
Windows inventories normally place the file here:
C:WindowsSystem32wevtfwd.dll
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit process may use the corresponding system component in C:WindowsSysWOW64. Do not copy a file between those directories. The correct architecture must match the process and Windows installation.

The legitimate file identifies with Microsoft Windows metadata and should normally be digitally signed by Microsoft. Its exact version and size vary according to the Windows release, servicing level, architecture, and language. A version number found online is not a universal target.
Fix 1: Repair Windows system files
This is the correct first repair when wevtfwd.dll is missing or damaged.
1. Install updates and restart
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if Windows does not insist on doing so.
Then continue with DISM and SFC.
2. Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source.
3. Run System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart the PC and retry the operation that produced the error.
A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error disappears, no DLL download or registration is needed.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run the DISM command again, followed by sfc /scannow. If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, use matching Windows installation media or an approved repair source rather than a downloaded DLL. Microsoft explains the repair-source process in its DISM documentation.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether the component store or system files changed can be frustrating. Outbyte PC Repair can show the issues found during its scan, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC commands remain the primary fix.

If the file disappeared after an update or DISM cannot repair the component store, Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall.
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This process reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, installed applications, and settings, according to Microsoft’s Windows repair reinstall guidance.
If that option is unavailable, use Windows installation media for the same edition and architecture and perform an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first. Do not use an unrelated ISO or substitute files from another Windows build.
If the failure began immediately after an update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and review whether removing the latest quality update is appropriate. You can also use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists. Microsoft documents these choices in its Windows recovery options.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false positive, although malware can also use the same filename.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
wevtfwd.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, publisher, and available signature information.
- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
Restore the file only when it is clearly the genuine Microsoft copy from the expected Windows directory and the detection is demonstrably incorrect. If it was in a user-writable folder, a temporary directory, a download location, or an application folder, leave it quarantined and investigate further. Microsoft explains this process in its Protection History guidance.
You can also inspect the file manually:
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Right-click
wevtfwd.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
A matching filename alone proves nothing. Malware can name itself wevtfwd.dll.
Fix 4: Repair WinRM and Event Forwarding
A missing-file error and an Event Forwarding configuration error are different problems.

If wevtfwd.dll exists in the expected Windows directory, check the operational log:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Open Applications and Services Logs.
- Select Microsoft > Windows > Eventlog-ForwardingPlugin > Operational.
- Review errors at the time the failure occurred.
Also verify:
- The Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) service is running.
- The Windows Event Collector service is running when the computer is acting as a collector.
- Event subscriptions are configured correctly.
- The source and collector can authenticate and communicate.
- Firewall rules permit the required WinRM traffic.
- Subscription queries and forwarded event channels are valid.
For collector configuration, Microsoft documents the wecutil command. For example, an administrator can run:
wecutil qc
This configures the Windows Event Collector service. It does not restore a missing DLL, repair SFC corruption, or replace WinRM components. See Microsoft’s wecutil documentation and Event Collector troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 5: Check legacy Windows Management Framework installations
Windows Management Framework 3.0 included the Event Forwarding plug-in for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008-era systems. Microsoft provided separate packages for 64-bit and 32-bit systems, including:

Do not install this old WMF package on modern Windows as a general repair. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or a supported repair reinstall.

Fix 6: Consider architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows can require the 32-bit system copy. That does not mean you should manually copy a 64-bit DLL into an application folder. Restore Windows components through servicing and let the correct loader path be used.
The message “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the loader is missing. It does not always prove that wevtfwd.dll itself is absent. Check the full event log or application log before replacing anything.
This is not normally a driver problem. Updating a graphics, chipset, or storage driver will not restore a missing Windows WS-Management plug-in. If a separate device problem is also present, use the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update as the driver source.
If manually checking many hardware drivers is slowing down diagnosis, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while its full version installs updates; it is optional and unrelated to the primary wevtfwd.dll repair.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 wevtfwd.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point, typically COM or ActiveX components. wevtfwd.dll is a WS-Management plug-in loaded by WinRM and is not normally registered that way. The command may produce an entry-point error and will not repair Windows servicing corruption.
Why DLL download sites are unsafe
Manually downloading wevtfwd.dll can give you:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- An unsigned or modified file
- A file containing malware
- A DLL that creates search-order conflicts
- A copy that does not include the missing dependency or servicing package
Do not copy a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, Windows recovery, or the official legacy WMF package instead.

Is wevtfwd.dll malware?
The genuine Windows file is a Microsoft component. Malware can use the same filename, so verify its location, digital signature, and antivirus results rather than judging by the name alone.
Is it part of Visual C++ Redistributable?
No. wevtfwd.dll belongs to Windows Remote Management and Windows Event Forwarding. Installing Visual C++ merely because a download page recommends it is not a supported fix.
Is it part of Windows Event Collector?
It supports the WS-Management Event Forwarding plug-in used with WinRM and Windows Event Forwarding. Event Collector configuration still requires working services, subscriptions, authentication, and network connectivity.
Should I reinstall the game or application showing the error?
Not as the first step. An unrelated application may display the loader message while Windows is missing its component. Repair Windows first. If the application has its own documented WinRM integration, then update or repair that application from its official installer after Windows is healthy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if the file exists but will not load?
Check the file signature and path, then inspect Event Viewer. The loader may be reporting a missing dependency, while the underlying Event Forwarding problem may be WinRM configuration or service-related.
When should I seek further repair?
If DISM and SFC fail, use a matching repair source, Windows recovery, System Restore, update removal, or an in-place repair installation. If the file is unsigned or appears outside the normal Windows directories, scan the system before restoring or replacing it.
