Use Xbox Accessories to update or customize the controller
Xbox Accessories is Microsoft’s official utility for compatible controllers and accessories. Its main uses include firmware updates, button remapping, and configuration profiles or other customization features for supported Elite and Adaptive controllers. Microsoft directs Windows 11 users to download it from the Microsoft Store, and Xbox has described firmware updates through the app on Xbox consoles and Windows 11 devices.

Use the Xbox app to play Xbox games
Windows
The Xbox app for Windows is intended for Xbox PC games, Xbox account integration, Game Pass-related functions, and supported cloud or remote-play workflows. It is not a universal controller driver, and a Windows game that already supports Xbox controllers may work without it.
If a game comes from Steam or another PC platform, use that platform’s controller settings or the game’s own controls. Installing the Xbox app solely to make basic controller input work is usually unnecessary.

Phones and tablets
For mobile gaming, the controller normally pairs directly with the phone or tablet through the operating system’s Bluetooth settings. The Xbox mobile app is useful for account, social, console, store, and Xbox ecosystem features, but it is not normally required just to pair the controller.
Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream supported games to compatible mobile devices and browsers, subject to the required subscription, title, device, operating-system, browser, region, and service availability. Check Xbox’s current mobile requirements before relying on a particular setup. Xbox also maintains a list of tested cloud-gaming controllers.
Cloud gaming and Remote Play are different: Cloud Gaming streams from Microsoft’s servers, while Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox console. Remote Play therefore also depends on the console being configured for remote access and available to connect.

How to connect an Xbox controller to a PC or phone
USB connection
Connect the controller to the PC or other supported device with a suitable USB cable. A charge-only cable may power the controller without carrying input data, so try a known data cable if the device does not detect it.
Bluetooth connection
- Open Bluetooth settings on the PC, Android device, iPhone, or iPad.
- Hold the controller’s pairing button until the Xbox button flashes.
- Select the controller in the device’s Bluetooth list.
- Open a controller-compatible game or supported Xbox service.
Bluetooth availability varies by controller generation and model. Older Xbox 360 controllers generally use a wired connection or a compatible wireless receiver rather than ordinary Bluetooth. A desktop PC without suitable Bluetooth may need a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, but not every controller requires one.
Do you need an app to use an Xbox controller?
No, not for ordinary gameplay when the controller and device are compatible. USB or Bluetooth establishes the connection, and the game handles the input. An app becomes useful when you need firmware updates, advanced remapping, accessory management, Xbox PC games, cloud gaming, or Remote Play.

Pairing is not the same as game support: a controller can appear as connected while a particular game does not support gamepads, does not recognize that controller model, or requires an input setting to be enabled.
What controller do you have?
Compatibility depends on the exact model. Identify whether yours is an Xbox Series X|S Wireless Controller, Xbox One controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox 360 controller, or a third-party Designed for Xbox product. Xbox provides separate information about controller and accessory compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Elite and Adaptive controllers: advanced profiles and remapping may require Xbox Accessories even when basic gameplay works without it.
- Xbox 360 controllers: do not assume Bluetooth pairing or current Xbox Accessories support.
- Third-party controllers: check the manufacturer’s support information and whether the specific model is supported by the game or cloud service.
- Wireless accessories: headset and accessory behavior can differ over Bluetooth, USB, and Xbox Wireless.
If Xbox Accessories does not detect the controller
- Replace the cable with a known data-capable USB cable.
- Try another USB port.
- Close other controller-management or remapping software.
- Restart Xbox Accessories and then restart the PC or console.
- Update Windows or the console and pair the controller again.
- Try the controller on another compatible Windows device or Xbox console.
- For a third-party controller, confirm that its model is supported.
If the controller connects but the game does not respond
- Test it in another game known to support controllers.
- Check the game’s input settings and restart the game after connecting the controller.
- On PC, check whether Steam Input, Xbox Accessories, another remapper, or an emulator is taking control of the device.
- Confirm that the game mode does not require keyboard and mouse input.
- For cloud gaming, check Xbox’s tested-controller list and current service requirements.
If a firmware update fails
Keep the controller connected by USB, try another cable or port, restart the app, and retry. Do not interrupt an update in progress. If the controller becomes unusable, avoid unofficial firmware and contact Xbox Support or use another controller to navigate the console.

Can a phone replace an Xbox controller?
Do not assume it can. Xbox’s official mobile materials describe using a physical Xbox controller with mobile gaming and using a phone for cloud gaming or Remote Play; they do not establish a general official feature that turns an iPhone or Android phone into a full Xbox gamepad.
For normal console gameplay, use a compatible physical controller unless Microsoft specifically documents phone-based input for the particular game or accessibility feature.
When third-party tools make sense
Steam Input can help when a game is launched through Steam or needs additional remapping. Paid utilities such as reWASD can provide deeper mappings, but they add cost and complexity and may conflict with anti-cheat software. Use them only for a specific PC need; Xbox Accessories remains the safer default for official firmware and controller configuration.
