You need internet and enough storage for the first download, and the card must be inserted whenever you start and play the game. Nintendo says that after the first launch, you can start it offline.
What is a game-key card?
It is a physical Nintendo Switch 2 game card containing a key that activates the software, rather than the complete game data. Insert it into the console and follow the HOME Menu prompts to download the game. Nintendo’s Key Cards guide shows a key icon on the front of game-key card packaging and lists the required download space.

Not every physical Switch 2 release necessarily uses this format. Check the packaging or the listing for the specific game edition and region.
How do game-key cards work?
- Insert the game-key card into the Switch 2.
- Connect the console to the internet and follow the HOME Menu prompts to download the game data. The console needs enough free storage; Nintendo says the required space appears on the card packaging and digital game listing. Nintendo identifies a microSD Express card as an available storage location if system memory does not have enough room.
- With the card inserted, launch the game. An internet connection is required for the first launch. Nintendo says an account is not required to download the game data.
Nintendo’s regional guide says that to use the same console again, you only need to insert the card; an internet connection is not required. To use the game on another console, the guide says to repeat the earlier steps, including downloading the data on that console.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Do game-key cards include the game?
They include a key, not the full game data. The game is downloaded to console storage or a microSD Express card, so the key card should not be treated like a standard game card containing the complete software.
Do I need internet to play?
You need internet for the initial download and, according to Nintendo Support, when launching the game for the first time. Nintendo says that after this first launch, the game can be started without an internet connection. That refers to starting the downloaded game; online multiplayer, updates, or other online services may still need connectivity.

Does the card need to stay inserted?
Yes. The physical game-key card must be inserted to start and play the downloaded game. The download does not turn the card into a digital license that can be used without the card.

Game-key card vs. standard game card
| What to check | Game-key card | Standard game card |
|---|---|---|
| Game data on the card | The full game data is not on the card; it provides a key to activate the software. | Regular game cards are a separate format supported by Switch 2; the game-key card guide distinguishes them from key cards. |
| Initial internet download | Required to download the game data. | The game-key card guide does not state a general download requirement for standard game cards. |
| Local storage | Enough free space is needed for the game download. The required space is shown on the packaging or digital listing. | The game-key card guide does not specify storage requirements for standard game cards. |
| Card required to play | Yes, it must be inserted to start and play. | The game-key card guide does not detail standard-card play requirements. |
The distinctions above are specific to Nintendo’s description of game-key cards; storage or download details can vary by release. For a specific purchase, check that edition’s format marking and stated download space rather than assuming all physical Switch 2 games use the same kind of card.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did Nintendo introduce game-key cards?
At Nintendo’s 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in June 2025, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said the format was introduced as one way to accommodate larger game data sizes on Switch 2 compared with Switch. He also said software can be released in different formats and that Nintendo would continue working with publishers. This is Nintendo’s stated rationale, not a claim that it is the only reason a publisher chooses the format. Nintendo’s shareholder Q&A summary provides the statement.
