A slime chunk is an ordinary 16-by-16 Minecraft chunk with a special chance to spawn slimes underground. In these chunks, slimes can spawn below Y=40 regardless of light level, making them the dependable foundation for underground slime farms. About 10% of generated chunks qualify. Finding the right chunk requires the correct edition, world seed and game version; a farm can still produce nothing if the player is too close, nearby caves consume the hostile-mob cap, or the world is set to Peaceful.

What a slime chunk is
Minecraft divides the Overworld into chunks that are 16 blocks wide and 16 blocks long. A slime chunk is not a different terrain type or a visible structure. It is a normal generated chunk carrying an internal eligibility flag that allows slime spawning below Y=40. The Minecraft Wiki’s 2024-era tutorial reports that every generated chunk has approximately a 10% chance of being a slime chunk.

A spawn attempt still needs a legal floor, enough open volume for the selected slime size, a nearby player and an available hostile-mob-cap slot.
Why the light level does not matter
Slime-chunk spawning below Y=40 ignores light. You can illuminate the room for visibility and safety without preventing slimes from appearing. This is different from many hostile mobs whose spawning rules include a darkness requirement. Lighting is still useful outside the room because it prevents other monsters from taking the mob-cap slots that slimes need.

What “below Y=40” means for a farm
Build the spawning floor at a Y level lower than 40; placing a platform at Y=39 or lower satisfies the vertical condition. Leave open space above every platform. Large slimes need substantially more room than their smaller forms, so a cramped ceiling can reduce successful attempts even when the chunk and height are correct. The exact farm layout is a construction choice, but the eligibility check remains the same: valid floor, clear volume and a player within the spawning range.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different chunk patterns
Edition selection is the first decision when using a slime-chunk finder. Java Edition locations are calculated from both the world seed and chunk coordinates. Changing the seed changes the pattern, even if you inspect the same coordinates. Bedrock references describe a coordinate-based pattern that is independent of the world seed, so a coordinate list can be reused between Bedrock worlds. The editions use different formulas; a result generated for one edition must not be treated as valid for the other.

|---|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Yes | World seed plus chunk coordinates | Choose the exact Java version in the tool, then check the selected chunk in-game |
| Bedrock Edition | Not for the coordinate pattern described by Bedrock references | Chunk coordinates using Bedrock’s formula | Select Bedrock in the tool and verify the location in your world |
Version selection still matters. A finder may offer separate entries for releases because generation rules and tool calculations are version-specific. If your world was converted, confirm which edition actually owns the save rather than assuming that the platform on which you are playing tells you the formula.
How to find a slime chunk
- Identify the edition. Determine whether the world is Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. Do not enter a Java seed into a Bedrock calculation or select the wrong edition in a map tool.
- Get the seed when using Java. In Java, obtain the world’s seed and copy it exactly. A missing minus sign changes the world completely. Bedrock’s coordinate pattern, as described by Bedrock references, does not require a seed for the pattern, but selecting Bedrock in the finder is still essential.
- Open a reputable slime-chunk finder or seed map. The Minecraft Wiki specifically names the Chunkbase Slime Chunk Finder as an external option. Enter the seed where the tool asks for it, choose the edition and select the version that matches the world.
- Choose a candidate chunk. Read the displayed chunk X and Z coordinates. Prefer a location that is reachable and not directly under an area you need to preserve. A nearby candidate may save hours of travel, but a cave-heavy site can require more spawn-proofing.
- Translate chunk coordinates to blocks. Each chunk covers a 16-by-16 horizontal area. The chunk’s X coordinate identifies its 16-block-wide east-west section, and its Z coordinate identifies its 16-block-long north-south section. Mark the four chunk borders before excavating so the spawning platforms stay inside the selected area. Be especially careful with negative coordinates: use the map’s highlighted borders rather than estimating from memory.
- Verify in the world. In Java, press F3 to open the debug overlay and inspect the chunk coordinates while standing at the candidate location. On Bedrock, use the world’s coordinate display, a map tool’s coordinate readout or a compatible resource pack where available. Walk across the marked borders and compare them with the finder before committing to a large excavation.
- Excavate below Y=40. Dig the room and platforms beneath the height limit, leave enough headroom for large slimes and provide a safe collection route. Lighting the room does not invalidate the slime-chunk rule.
Marking the borders accurately
Chunk errors are usually boundary errors rather than a failed formula. A 16-block shift can put an entire platform in the neighboring chunk. Mark one corner, measure the 16-block intervals in both horizontal directions and outline the perimeter with temporary blocks. If the finder highlights several adjacent slime chunks, outline each one separately before joining rooms.

How a practical slime-chunk farm works
Choose the spawning floor and room height
Start with one or more flat platforms below Y=40. Keep the floor free of blocks that prevent ordinary mob spawning, and leave vertical clearance between platforms if you stack them. The room must be open enough for large slimes; a design that only accommodates small slimes wastes valid spawn attempts. Build ladders, stairways or a protected access shaft outside the active floor so your own movement does not occupy the spawning area.
Control nearby caves
Slime chunks do not receive a private mob cap. Other caves and dark spaces within the active area can spawn zombies, skeletons and other hostile mobs, using the cap before a slime attempt succeeds. Light those caves, flood them or otherwise make their surfaces unable to spawn mobs. This preparation often determines the difference between occasional slimes and a useful farm.

Stand at the correct distance
Spawn attempts require the player to be close enough, but not inside the exclusion radius. Current finder documentation describes spawning at least 24 blocks from the player, while the farm tutorial gives a 128-block outer despawn boundary. In practice, stand more than 24 blocks from the nearest platform and remain within 128 blocks of the active area. A protected AFK platform can keep this distance consistent while preventing accidental falls.
Collect drops without blocking spawns
Route slimes toward a collection point with channels, water or another transport design that does not cover the spawning floor with non-spawnable blocks. Keep storage and redstone outside the platforms where possible. The collection mechanism is separate from chunk eligibility: a correct chunk can produce slimes even before you add an automated kill chamber, provided the floor and player-distance rules are met.

Why no slimes are spawning
Check these causes in order. Change one variable at a time so you can identify the actual failure instead of rebuilding the entire farm.
The finder used the wrong edition, seed or version
For Java, re-copy the seed from the world and confirm its sign. Check that the finder is set to Java and to the matching release. For Bedrock, switch the finder to Bedrock and use its coordinate pattern rather than a Java result. Recheck the chunk borders in-game with coordinates before digging farther.

Measure the block position of the floor, not the player’s eye height or the room’s ceiling. Move the platform below Y=40 if necessary. Lighting will not fix a platform that is too high; height is a separate eligibility condition.
You are inside the 24-block exclusion radius
Move the AFK or observation position farther away from the nearest platform while staying inside the 128-block outer boundary. If the farm has several levels, measure from the closest level, not just from the center of the room. A viewing balcony placed over the farm can unintentionally stop every platform beneath it.

Other caves are filling the mob cap
Search the surrounding underground area for dark caverns, ravines and unlit tunnels. Spawn-proof their floors with light, water or blocks that do not permit hostile-mob spawning. Surface darkness can also matter if it falls within the active area, so inspect the terrain above the farm when underground checks find nothing.
The world is on Peaceful
Slimes are hostile mobs, so Peaceful difficulty prevents the farm from operating. Change to an appropriate difficulty if the world rules allow it, then leave and re-enter the area to let normal spawning attempts resume.
The room lacks usable space
Remove low ceilings, decorative blocks and partial obstructions over the floor. Large slimes require a clear volume, and a platform that technically exists can still fail many attempts if its headroom is insufficient. Keep collection machinery from intruding into the spawn volume.
The location was never a slime chunk
Return to the marked borders and test a second point inside the same chunk. If the boundaries do not match the finder, stop excavating and remap the location. A neighboring chunk can look identical underground while having no slime eligibility at all.

Swamp spawning: the alternative to a slime chunk
A swamp-based farm avoids chunk finding and does not require a seed map. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial places swamp slime spawning between Y=51 and Y=69, with a light-level condition. Because the farm depends on a suitable swamp surface and nighttime-like darkness, rates are generally lower than a dedicated slime-chunk farm. The trade-off is preparation: you can build where a swamp already exists instead of locating and excavating a specific underground chunk.
| Method | Edition and seed requirement | Vertical range | Preparation effort | Nearby cave dependence | Convenience and rate considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slime-chunk farm | Java requires the world seed; Bedrock uses the Bedrock coordinate pattern; both require the correct edition setting | Below Y=40 | Locate borders, excavate platforms and build spawn-proofing | Caves can consume the hostile-mob cap and usually need spawn-proofing | Works underground and ignores light; excavation is the main cost |
| Swamp farm | No slime-chunk lookup; requires a suitable swamp biome | Y=51 through Y=69, according to the Minecraft Wiki tutorial | Prepare a surface area and meet the swamp’s light and terrain conditions | Underground caves can still compete when within the active spawning area | Avoids chunk-finding work but depends on biome and surface conditions, with generally lower rates |
When a swamp is the better choice
Choose a swamp if you already have one nearby, do not want to clear a deep underground room or are playing a version in which verifying a chunk is inconvenient. It is also a useful fallback when repeated checks show that a supposed slime chunk was mapped incorrectly. Expect the farm to be more sensitive to light and surface conditions than an underground design.
When a slime chunk is the better choice
Choose a slime chunk when you need a dependable long-term source, can obtain the Java seed or identify Bedrock coordinates and are willing to excavate. Underground platforms can be lit for safe work, stacked vertically and protected from weather. Their output still depends on player distance and mob-cap management, so the location alone is not a guarantee of speed.
A reliable verification checklist
- The world edition matches the finder setting.
- The Java seed was copied exactly, including any negative sign.
- The selected game version matches the world.
- The candidate chunk’s 16-by-16 borders were marked in-game.
- The spawning floor is below Y=40.
- Platforms have clear headroom for large slimes.
- You stand more than 24 blocks away and within 128 blocks.
- Nearby caves and dark surfaces are spawn-proofed.
- The world difficulty is not Peaceful.
- Collection equipment does not occupy the spawning floor.
Key takeaways for planning
Think of a slime chunk as permission, not a promise. The chunk flag supplies the special underground eligibility, but the farm still follows normal spawning constraints: height, open space, player distance, difficulty and the shared hostile-mob cap. Java players must calculate with the world seed; Bedrock players must use the Bedrock pattern and edition setting. If you prefer to skip chunk mapping, a swamp farm is a valid but generally slower alternative with its own height and light requirements.
