There is no official, objective hardest game in the world. Difficulty varies by genre and player: a punishing platformer tests precision, a fighting game demands matchup knowledge and timing, while a roguelike may make every mistake costly by wiping out a long run. This is an editorial shortlist of ten especially demanding games, chosen to show those different kinds of challenge—not a universal ranking.
How to compare the hardest games
A useful comparison asks what a game demands and what it makes failure cost. The entries below weigh timing and precision, pattern learning, enemy or level design, lost progress, and the options available to reduce or reshape the challenge. The assumed challenge is ordinary solo play, aiming to complete the main game or its core run—not achieve a speedrun, perfect score, or competitive mastery. Modes, assistance, builds, and experience can change the result.
Player-vote lists offer one view of community opinion, not a representative survey. How Difficult Is It? says games need at least five difficulty ratings to appear in its rankings; that threshold does not make the ratings an objective measure. Its current Top 100 page displays Battletoads at 9.2, with a 9.0 weighted rating from 36 submissions. Those figures describe that site’s submitted ratings, not the odds that any player will finish the game. How Difficult Is It? Top 100
The 10 hardest games, across different kinds of challenge

Battletoads
Battletoads earns a place as a classic action-platform challenge, where sharp reactions and precise execution are central to surviving demanding sequences. It also leads the displayed How Difficult Is It? Top 100, with a 9.2 player rating, 9.0 weighted rating, and 36 ratings. That is a player-vote snapshot, not proof that it is harder than every game in every genre. How Difficult Is It? Top 100

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Sekiro makes combat a test of timing and pattern learning. Its deflection-focused system rewards reading an enemy and responding at the right moment; repeatedly falling back on cautious, familiar action-game habits may not work. PlayStation describes its boss duels as demanding concentration and finesse, and notes that players cannot summon co-op partners to help with bosses. How Difficult Is It? reported an 8.59/10 score in its 4 September 2026 ranking of Souls and soulslike games—a score within that article’s scope and vote snapshot. Super Street Fighter II Turbo
This fighting-game classic tests a different skill set: precise inputs, reactions, and knowledge of how opponents and matchups work. Its high ceiling makes it difficult not only to win, but to do so consistently against skilled opposition. How Difficult Is It? named it the top game in its 29 April 2026 all-time player-vote article, reporting 9.71/10. That number is a community rating, not an official difficulty score. Cuphead
Cuphead combines run-and-gun stages with boss fights that demand careful observation, movement, and timing. The challenge often comes from learning an encounter through repeated attempts: recognize an attack, adjust, and survive a little longer next time. The Guardian describes its boss fights as deceptively difficult. The Guardian: Why video games are so hard

Super Meat Boy
Super Meat Boy is precision platforming stripped to its essentials. Blades and spikes leave little room for imprecise movement, and a failed jump sends you back to try again. The repeated deaths are part of the level’s learning process, but completing it still requires reliable execution. The Guardian: Why video games are so hard

Returnal
Returnal tests both combat skill and endurance across runs. Hostile encounters demand quick decisions, and death sends the player back to the beginning of a run, making survival and risk management part of the challenge. That run structure can make a mistake feel more expensive than a retry in a short platforming level. The Guardian: Why video games are so hard
-
Celeste
Celeste asks for exact movement through difficult jumps, with success built through repeated attempts. Its challenge is principally about execution and learning a route, rather than defeating a boss or managing a long run. The Guardian identifies it as a punishing platformer; the cited feature does not establish specific assist-setting details, so this entry assumes the standard challenge rather than a modified one. Spelunky 2
Spelunky 2’s cave hazards are unpredictable, and a small mistake can kill the player. That makes careful observation and improvisation essential: a familiar route can turn dangerous when the surrounding situation changes. Co-op can add further chaos, so this selection is about the solo challenge rather than a claim that every mode feels equally difficult. The Guardian: Why video games are so hard

Elden Ring
Elden Ring can deliver brutal fights, but its open world gives players more ways to manage the challenge than a fixed sequence of boss duels. When an enemy is too difficult, exploring for equipment or practice and choosing a different fight can change the experience. How hard it feels therefore depends partly on where the player goes and when they return to a difficult encounter. PlayStation: Elden Ring

Defender
This 1981 arcade shooter is a test of awareness as much as reflex. Threats can come from multiple directions, forcing the player to track a crowded screen and respond quickly. The Guardian describes it as exceptionally demanding even for capable players, making it a strong example of old-school arcade difficulty rather than a modern campaign with checkpoints and progression. Nintendo Wii Console, White Premium Bundle (Renewed)- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
What changes how hard a game feels?
- Genre experience: A player familiar with fighting-game inputs, platforming precision, or Soulslike combat starts with different skills than a newcomer.
- Failure cost: Repeating a jump, losing a life, and restarting a long run impose different kinds of pressure.
- Learning versus execution: Some games reward studying enemy patterns; others demand consistently accurate movement or rapid reactions.
- Available options: Elden Ring’s open-world exploration can offer more opportunity to prepare before a fight. Sekiro’s boss duels, by contrast, require the player to learn their timing without a co-op partner.
- What counts as success: Finishing the main game is not the same task as mastering every encounter, completing optional challenges, or winning at a high competitive level.
Other credible contenders illustrate why a single top ten is difficult to defend. Ninja Gaiden (1988) and Lobotomy Corporation appear near the top of How Difficult Is It?’s player-vote ranking. Bloodborne adds aggressive combat and the extra challenge of its Chalice Dungeons, while the Rally mechanic lets players recover health by quickly retaliating after damage. The Trials series asks players to balance rider and bike through precision obstacle courses. Dark Souls draws on careful play, nerves, learning, and community knowledge—not just reflexes. Each belongs in a broader discussion, but a different weighting of genres or failure costs would produce a different shortlist. How Difficult Is It? Why there is no definitive hardest-game ranking
No representative completion-rate statistic or official metric makes these games directly comparable. How Difficult Is It?’s ratings reflect submissions to that site, while the Guardian’s 2021 feature offers cross-genre examples rather than a current ranked list. PlayStation’s game guides provide useful context about particular mechanics, not a common measurement across titles. Even a well-supported shortlist must make choices about edition, mode, assistance, and whether it values completion or mastery.
That variety is also why difficult does not automatically mean unfair. A game can be hard because it requires precision, because failure erases progress, because its threats are difficult to read, or because it demands a steep learning curve. Keza MacDonald, writing in The Guardian on 9 July 2021, put the personal nature of that struggle plainly: “I still haven’t finished it.” She was describing her own experience with Sekiro, not reporting a completion-rate statistic. The Guardian, 9 July 2021
