Why Game Industry Layoffs Passed 10,500 by Mid-June 2024

A mid-June 2024 tracker estimate put announced game industry layoffs above 10,800, surpassing its 2023 total as companies faced slower growth, higher costs and projects with weaker expected returns.

By mid-June 2024, announced video game industry layoffs had passed 10,800, exceeding the Game Industry Layoff Tracker’s estimate of 10,500 for all of 2023. That was a running estimate reported by GamesBeat’s Dean Takahashi—not a finalized annual count or an independently audited census. The surge reflected several pressures converging: slower growth after the pandemic, expensive development, forecasts that proved too optimistic, and companies cutting projects and teams as expected returns changed.

What the 10,800 figure counts—and what it does not

GamesBeat reported on June 14, 2024, that the Game Industry Layoff Tracker’s running estimate had passed 10,800 announced cuts in roughly five and a half months. The article cited 150 cuts at Sumo Group and 100 at Timbre Games as the latest additions. The tracker’s comparison was 10,500 for all of 2023 and 8,500 for 2022. These are tracker estimates of announced layoffs, not verified counts of unique people or a completed 2024 total. GamesBeat’s report was updated June 18, 2025.

The apparent speed of the increase matters: the 2024 estimate surpassed the prior year’s cited total before half the year had passed. But the figures do not, by themselves, explain why companies made cuts, establish that every affected worker was counted once, or show that layoffs continued at the same rate through the rest of 2024.

Why companies were cutting jobs

Matthew Ball, an angel investor and CEO of Epyllion, described the causes as “diverse and structural.” As summarized and quoted by Takahashi, his account links changing business models and player behavior with labor economics, disappointing forecasts, rising competition and budgets, console saturation, and weakening growth drivers. No single event accounts for the tracker’s running total.

Growth expectations met a less favorable market

During the pandemic, time spent at home and demand for entertainment helped support rapid hiring and investment across games. As restrictions eased, people spent less time at home, and growth slowed or declined in some markets. Takahashi also reported Ball’s estimates that real US consumer spending was down 14% since 2021 and international sales down 13% since 2020. Those are Ball’s figures as reproduced in the article; its reviewed account does not provide the underlying calculations or datasets, so they should not be treated as independently verified industry-wide measures.

Companies that had expanded on the assumption that demand would keep accelerating then faced a gap between planned growth and actual performance. Ball characterized some of the rationales behind disappointing forecasts as only recently abandoned. When expected revenue does not materialize, firms may reduce staffing, cancel projects, or shrink teams rather than continue funding a plan built for a larger market.

Games became more expensive to make and compete with

Development budgets and competition for player attention have grown. A project can require substantial investment before a company knows whether it will attract and retain enough players to justify that expense. If forecasts fall short, continuing development may look less attractive than canceling or scaling back a game. Higher costs and interest rates also make ambitious investment harder to sustain, particularly when a company’s expected returns have weakened.

Portfolio changes translated into studio cuts

Ball said the layoffs spanned canceled and scaled-back games, studios that were closed or reduced, and startups forced to close after private funding for gaming studios fell. He cited that funding as down 28% from pre-pandemic levels even as overall venture capital was up 15%. Those figures describe Ball’s account, not a separate tally of layoffs.

Takahashi’s article names projects and services that underperformed, ended, or lost funding as context for companies’ decisions. Such examples show the kinds of portfolio pressures at work; they do not prove that any one title directly caused a particular round of layoffs. The wider explanation is that firms were reassessing projects and staffing at the same time the economics and expectations behind their plans were changing.

Why published layoff numbers do not always match

Different reports measure different things. A tracker of announced cuts, a survey asking workers about their experience, and an analysis of selected companies’ headcounts cannot be added together or compared as if they were the same census.

What the comparison says about the industry

The June 2024 comparison is evidence of a sharp run of announced cuts, not proof that people stopped playing games. The underlying argument is that growth, spending patterns, costs, and expected returns shifted together while companies reconsidered projects and staffing. A high tracker estimate can reflect that convergence without identifying a single cause—or telling the full story of every affected worker.
