1. Connect the PS5 directly to the display
For the initial setup, connect the console directly to the TV or monitor. Use the HDMI cable included with the PS5 or a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. For 4K/120 Hz, Sony recommends a cable rated for that signal; compatible Ultra High-Speed cables support bandwidth up to 48 Gbps.

Use the display’s HDMI input labeled for 4K/120 Hz, HDMI 2.1, Enhanced, or VRR. Many TVs provide only one or two full-bandwidth ports. Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter, or capture card while testing.
2. Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode
TV manufacturers use different labels. Examples include:
- Sony: Enhanced format, Enhanced format (VRR), or Enhanced format (4K120, 8K)
- LG: HDMI Deep Color or a similar high-bandwidth option
- Samsung: Input Signal Plus
- TCL and Hisense: Enhanced HDMI, HDMI 2.1 mode, or a similar setting
On supported Sony TVs, the path is Settings → Channels & Inputs → External inputs → HDMI signal format. Select the enhanced or VRR-compatible format for the PS5 port. Menus vary by model, firmware, region, and HDMI input.
3. Enable Game Mode
Set the TV to Game Mode, Game Optimizer, Auto Game Mode, or its equivalent. This normally reduces input lag by disabling or limiting processing such as motion smoothing, noise reduction, MPEG reduction, and artificial sharpening.
For accurate output, avoid Vivid, Dynamic, and Cinema modes as your starting point. Disable overscan and choose a pixel-perfect aspect-ratio option such as Just Scan, Screen Fit, 1:1, or Full Pixel when available.
4. Apply the PS5 baseline
Open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output and use the settings in the table above. Then check Current Video Output Signal to see what the display is actually receiving. A 4K TV does not automatically mean the console is receiving 4K/120 Hz.
5. Calibrate HDR
With the TV already in its HDR Game picture mode, open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → Adjust HDR. Follow the on-screen instructions on each calibration screen, adjusting until the symbol is barely visible as instructed.

HDR calibration is display-dependent. Run it again after changing TVs, HDR picture modes, or major tone-mapping settings. Games may also include their own HDR calibration; complete that separately.
6. Choose the game’s graphics mode
The console cannot make a game render at a resolution or frame rate that the game does not support. In general:
- Quality or Fidelity: Better visual effects and detail, often at 30 or 40 frames per second.
- Performance: Usually targets 60 frames per second, sometimes with reduced resolution or effects.
- 120 Hz mode: May reduce resolution or visual effects to target up to 120 frames per second.
- VRR mode: Can use dynamic resolution or a variable frame-rate range.
What each PS5 video setting does
Resolution: Automatic
Automatic allows the PS5 to select the highest resolution negotiated with the connected display. Use 2160p manually only when troubleshooting or when Automatic fails to select the expected signal.
Even when the PS5 outputs 4K, some games render internally below 4K and upscale. Performance and Quality modes are game-level choices, so changing the system resolution cannot turn a 30-fps mode into native 4K/120 Hz.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →120 Hz Output: Automatic
Automatic enables supported displays and games to use 120 Hz. It does not force every game to run at 120 frames per second. The game must provide a high-frame-rate mode, and the TV, HDMI port, cable, firmware, and signal path must accept it.
Temporarily set this to Off if the display goes blank when launching a game, falls back to 1080p, or repeatedly loses signal. Sony specifically recommends disabling 120 Hz Output when it causes display problems.
VRR: Automatic
VRR dynamically adjusts the display’s refresh rate as the game’s frame rate changes. It can reduce tearing and make uneven frame rates appear smoother, but results vary by display.

Apply to Unsupported Games is best treated as a per-setup experiment. Leave it On initially, especially if a game has unstable frame pacing, but turn it Off if you see flicker, brightness shifts, artifacts, or other unexpected behavior. OLED displays can show near-black brightness fluctuations, while some TVs flicker when frame rates move through their VRR range. Sony documents that VRR-related brightness changes can occur on some TVs.
ALLM: Automatic
Automatic allows a compatible TV to switch into its low-latency gaming mode. Verify that Game Mode actually activates; ALLM support and behavior vary between displays. Sony also notes that VRR may invoke low-latency behavior even when ALLM is Off. Completely disabling that behavior may require turning VRR off as well.
Video Transfer Rate: Automatic
Keep this on Automatic. Set it to -1 or, if necessary, -2 only when the signal flickers or drops out. These values reduce the available output formats and bandwidth. They are stability fallbacks, not picture-quality enhancements.
Sony states that -1 limits 4K/120 Hz and 4K 50/60 Hz RGB or YUV444 Deep Color output. -2 imposes further limitations, including 4K/120 Hz and 4K 50/60 Hz RGB or YUV444 output.
HDR: On When Supported
On When Supported is the best general setting for accurate source switching. HDR games and apps use HDR, while SDR content remains SDR.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Always On converts non-HDR games and apps to HDR. Some users prefer the resulting brighter or more vivid presentation, but it is not a universal quality upgrade and can produce inconsistent brightness or tone mapping. Sony confirms this distinction in its official guide.
Deep Color Output: Automatic
Automatic lets the PS5 negotiate compatible deep-color output. Do not assume that manually forcing it On improves every display. Older TVs, receivers, splitters, soundbars, and capture devices can mishandle higher-bandwidth HDR signals.

RGB Range: Automatic
Automatic is the correct starting point. RGB Range controls the black-to-white signal range and must match the display’s expectation.
A mismatch can cause crushed blacks and missing shadow detail, or gray blacks and a washed-out image. Do not force RGB Full by default. Sony recommends changing RGB Range only when an HDMI device is not communicating range information correctly. If you must troubleshoot it, change the PS5 and TV together and compare the result using a dark test scene.

Best TV settings for PS5
- Picture mode: Game, Game Optimizer, or the TV’s accurate low-latency mode.
- HDR picture mode: HDR Game or its equivalent.
- Motion processing: Off or minimized for the lowest latency.
- Noise reduction: Off unless you have a specific reason to use it.
- Dynamic contrast and vivid color: Off or restrained for more accurate output.
- Sharpness: Near the neutral position; excessive sharpening creates halos and ringing.
- Tone mapping: Use the TV-specific accurate or static option if you want the game’s intended HDR behavior. Dynamic tone mapping may look brighter but changes the presentation.
- Black level: Auto initially, matching the PS5’s negotiated range.
- Overscan: Off; use the TV’s pixel-perfect option.
- HDMI format: Enhanced, 4K120, VRR, or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
Options such as HGiG, Dynamic Tone Mapping, HDR Tone Mapping, Contrast Enhancer, and Peak Brightness are not universally best. They vary by TV and personal preference. Calibrate HDR after choosing the tone-mapping behavior you intend to keep.
PS5 Pro-only image settings
On CFI-7000-series PS5 Pro consoles, Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games can improve image quality in some PS4 titles. Leave it On if stable, but disable it when a game behaves unexpectedly.
Enhance PSSR Image Quality can improve image quality in compatible games using PSSR. It is not a universal improvement for every title, so turn it off if a supported game shows artifacts or instability.
Allow 8K Output is a niche option requiring an 8K/60 Hz display with Display Stream Compression. VRR is disabled during 8K output. For most PS5 Pro owners, a high-quality 4K OLED or Mini-LED display offers more meaningful gaming benefits than paying extra for 8K.

OLED or LCD/Mini-LED for PS5?
OLED offers excellent black levels, fast pixel response, strong motion clarity, and generally excellent responsiveness. Consider image-retention or burn-in risk as a usage-dependent issue, particularly if you display static elements for long periods. OLED VRR can also expose near-black brightness fluctuations, and glossy screens may reflect bright rooms.

LCD or Mini-LED can be brighter for HDR and better suited to rooms with direct sunlight. It avoids OLED burn-in concerns, but local-dimming models can show blooming, while cheaper LCDs may have slower response, more motion blur, or weaker blacks.
For a PS5 display, prioritize a native 4K panel, accurate Game mode, HDR10, good contrast and HDR brightness, low input lag, a 120 Hz panel if you play compatible high-frame-rate games, HDMI 2.1-class bandwidth, and VRR. RTINGS’ current PS5 TV testing uses these factors rather than resolution alone.
A quality 4K/60 Hz TV can still look excellent for games that target 30 or 60 fps. A budget TV labeled “HDMI 2.1” may still lack the bandwidth required for 4K/120 Hz, so verify the exact port and feature list.
Fix common PS5 picture problems
PS5 shows 1080p instead of 4K at 120 Hz
- Update the TV firmware.
- Move the PS5 to the TV’s designated 4K/120 Hz HDMI input.
- Enable Enhanced, 4K120, or the equivalent HDMI mode.
- Use the included PS5 cable or a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
- Connect directly to the TV, bypassing receivers and soundbars.
- Set Resolution and Video Transfer Rate to Automatic.
- Check Current Video Output Signal while running a compatible game.
The screen flickers or loses signal
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Try another certified cable and the correct high-bandwidth port.
- Update the TV and PS5.
- Bypass intermediary equipment.
- Set Video Transfer Rate to -1, then -2 only if necessary.
- Disable VRR temporarily.
- Disable 120 Hz Output temporarily.
Remember that -1 and -2 trade output capability for stability.
HDR looks washed out
- Confirm that the TV has entered HDR Game mode.
- Enable the input’s enhanced HDMI format.
- Run Adjust HDR again after selecting the final HDR picture mode.
- Leave PS5 RGB Range and the TV black level on Auto initially.
- Compare the TV’s tone-mapping options rather than assuming Dynamic Tone Mapping or HGiG is universally best.
- Complete the game’s own HDR calibration.
- Use On When Supported if SDR games and apps look unnaturally bright or oversaturated.
Blacks are gray or shadow detail is missing
- Return PS5 RGB Range to Automatic.
- Return the TV’s black level to Auto.
- Re-run the game’s HDR calibration.
- Compare VRR On and Off, particularly on an OLED.
- Use a neutral Game picture mode without excessive contrast enhancement.
VRR causes flicker
Turn off Apply to Unsupported Games first. If the issue remains, disable VRR for that game, update the TV firmware, or use a fixed Performance or Quality mode with fewer frame-rate swings. Some VRR flicker is a characteristic of a particular TV-panel combination rather than a fault in the PS5.
The image is cropped or has black borders
On the PS5, go to Settings → Screen and Video → Screen → Adjust Display Area. On the TV, disable overscan and select its pixel-perfect aspect-ratio option. The exact label may be Just Scan, Screen Fit, 1:1, or Full Pixel.
When should you buy a different TV, cable, or receiver?
Upgrade the display when it is the limiting part of the chain: a bright room may need a brighter Mini-LED, while a dark room may benefit more from OLED contrast. Competitive players should verify 120 Hz, VRR, low input lag, and actual HDMI bandwidth. Casual players who mainly use 30- or 60-fps modes may gain more from better HDR and contrast than from a 120 Hz upgrade.
Replace a cable when the original is missing, too short, damaged, or associated with intermittent black screens. A certified Ultra High-Speed cable can improve reliability, but a working certified cable does not make colors sharper or brighter.
If a receiver or soundbar supports only HDMI 2.0, it can bottleneck a PS5 and TV that otherwise support 4K/120 Hz. Test the direct path first, then reconnect the audio equipment and confirm the signal again.
Professional calibration is optional and most useful for a high-end display, a dedicated theater room, multiple sources, or persistent grayscale, gamma, or HDR problems. Do not copy fixed calibration numbers from another TV: individual panels can vary even within the same model.
