For most players, the best place to start is Marvel’s Spider-Man, followed by Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. That order follows the story and gives you the clearest introduction to Insomniac’s modern series. If you want a classic instead, older standouts include Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man (2000), Ultimate Spider-Man (2005), and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (2010).
Which Spider-Man game should you play first?
Start with Marvel’s Spider-Man, either the PS4 Game of the Year Edition or the PS5 Remastered version. PlayStation recommends beginning with the first game; its story introduces Peter Parker and the world continued by the later entries. Both named editions include The City That Never Sleeps expansion. PlayStation’s series FAQ and game page explain the recommended entry point and edition content.

PlayStation places Miles Morales about a year after the first game, and Spider-Man 2 roughly nine months after Miles Morales. You can follow Spider-Man 2 without playing the earlier games, according to PlayStation, but the previous stories add context to the characters and their relationships. Marvel’s Spider-Man: best story-first entry
Peter Parker is the lead, and this is the recommended choice if you want to understand the arc that leads into the sequels. The PS4 Game of the Year Edition and PS5 Remastered both include The City That Never Sleeps expansion. Remastered is the PS5 version; the PS4 edition is a separate purchase, so compare the platform and edition shown on the store page before buying.

Miles Morales: best focused follow-up
This standalone game puts Miles in the lead as he takes up the Spider-Man role. It is a shorter, more focused next step in the series’ story than jumping directly to the two-hero sequel. Insomniac says the PS5 Ultimate Edition includes both Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. Its support guide also says the PS4 standard edition has a free PS5 upgrade; if you own the PS4 disc, you need a PS5 with a disc drive to use that upgrade. Edition contents and upgrade terms can matter more than the title alone, so check the live listing and your console before purchase. Insomniac’s editions and upgrade guide was dated November 19, 2025.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: best two-hero spectacle
Peter and Miles are both playable, and the game lets you switch between them. Its New York expands to include Brooklyn and Queens, and Web Wings add another way to move through the city. The game is single-player: switching heroes does not mean two people can play together. PlayStation announced the PS5 release for October 20, 2023, and later announced the PC version for January 30, 2025, via Steam and the Epic Games Store. PlayStation’s game page describes its features and solo format; PlayStation.Blog’s PC announcement identifies the PC release date and stores.

Best classic Spider-Man games
For players interested in earlier eras, GamesRadar’s retrospective highlights four notable games. These are editorial picks, not a universal ranking, and older titles may be harder to access on current hardware. Check compatibility and legitimate store availability before buying or relying on an old platform listing. GamesRadar’s all-time list describes the selections.
- Spider-Man (2000): A landmark 3D take on the character, representing an earlier design era than the open-world Insomniac games.
- Spider-Man 2 (2004): A separate game from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023); the similar titles can be easy to confuse when searching storefronts.
- Ultimate Spider-Man (2005): Known for its cel-shaded comic-book look; GamesRadar also notes boss battles as a drawback.
- Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (2010): A more linear adventure featuring four playable Spider-Men, rather than one continuous open-world Peter-and-Miles story.
How to choose the right game
- Want the clearest story introduction? Begin with Marvel’s Spider-Man, then continue in release-story order with Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2.
- Want to play as Miles? Choose Miles Morales for a focused lead role, or Spider-Man 2 if you want to switch between Miles and Peter.
- Want co-op? The modern Spider-Man 2 is single-player, even though it features two playable heroes.
- Choosing a platform or edition? Check whether the listing is for PS4, PS5, or PC, and confirm what content is included. For the PS4 disc upgrade of Miles Morales, a PS5 disc drive is required.
- Looking for a classic? Use the exact title and year when searching, especially for the 2004 Spider-Man 2 versus the 2023 Marvel’s Spider-Man 2; check that the game works on your hardware.
For platform and release metadata, GameSpot’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 listing lists PS5 and PC and gives October 20, 2023 as its first release date. Sony’s PS5 launch announcement also confirms October 20, 2023. Release dates and platform listings identify where a game launched; they do not establish which game is best for every player.
