Together, the cycle covers all 10 possible two-color pairs. Wizards of the Coast identifies them as a cycle that originated in the Ravnica block and confirms that all ten returned in Ravnica Remastered: Ravnica Remastered Release Notes. A current cycle index also lists the full set of names and color pairs: Shock land cycle reference.
How a shock land works
Each shock land can tap for either of its two colors. As it enters the battlefield, its controller chooses whether to pay 2 life. Paying lets it enter untapped; declining means it enters tapped. The choice trades life for immediate access to mana, so the right option depends on the game state.
Why the land types matter
A shock land is not a basic land, even though it has two basic land types. Those types let it interact with cards that care about a land type: for example, Stomping Ground is both a Mountain and a Forest. But an effect that specifically searches for a basic land cannot find it. Wizards gives the examples of Open the Gates, which cannot find Stomping Ground, and Drowned Catacomb, which can recognize its land types: Wizards’ release notes.

Paying life does not remove another effect’s tapped condition
If another effect puts a shock land onto the battlefield tapped, you may still pay 2 life as it enters, but it remains tapped. The payment does not override the separate effect that caused it to enter tapped; Wizards states this explicitly for Stomping Ground in the Ravnica Remastered release notes.
Where the cycle came from
The shock lands first appeared in the original Ravnica block. Mark Rosewater describes them as that block’s rare dual lands, with the option to enter tapped unless the player paid 2 life: Ravnica and the Guildpact. Wizards later confirmed the full cycle’s return in Ravnica Remastered.

Shock lands in Edge of Eternities
Wizards’ Edge of Eternities collecting guide says five shock lands appeared among the set’s borderless viewport lands, alongside five Planet lands. Nonfoil and traditional foil borderless versions could appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters; galaxy foil viewport versions were exclusive to Collector Boosters. These are details about that set’s treatments, not a promise that a booster contains a specific shock land or that any particular version is currently in stock: Collecting Edge of Eternities.

When deciding which one to use, start with the two colors your deck needs and consider whether the land types interact with other cards in your list. Then weigh the cost of paying 2 life against the tempo cost of having the land enter tapped. If you need a particular copy for a deck or collection, searching for the exact card name as a single is more targeted than opening sealed boosters.
