Yoshi comes in several colors, but there is no single franchise-wide list. Which colors appear, and whether they have different abilities, depends on the game. Nintendo’s own manuals and character pages name red, blue, and yellow Yoshis in Super Mario World, red, blue, green, and yellow in Yoshi’s Story, and red, pink, blue, and yellow in Yoshi’s Crafted World, where the list is left open with “and more.”
Colors named in each game
The table below lists only the colors that Nintendo’s official material names for each game. It is not a complete census of Yoshi colors across the series.
| Game and source | Colors named | What the source says about them |
|---|---|---|
| Super Mario World manual (Nintendo manual PDF) | Red, Blue, Yellow | Each grown colored Yoshi has a distinct ability: fireballs, timed flight, and sand clouds. |
| Yoshi’s Story manual (Nintendo manual PDF) | Red, blue, green, yellow | Each Yoshi has a favorite fruit, and all Yoshis like melons. |
| Yoshi’s Crafted World character page (Nintendo) | Red, pink, blue, yellow, and more | Presented as examples. The page does not enumerate every color. |
Super Mario World: colors with abilities
The Super Mario World manual is the clearest official source that ties specific colors to specific powers. Those powers are described for this game only.
Red Yoshi
The manual states: “Red Yoshi always spits out fire balls, whatever the color of the shells in its mouth.”

According to the same manual, these colored Yoshis begin as little Yoshis and grow after being fed five enemies. The manual also notes that a little Yoshi’s specialties differ from those of a big Yoshi, so the colored abilities above belong to the grown form.
Yoshi’s Story: colors and favorite fruit
In Yoshi’s Story, the manual’s “Yoshi Colors” section names “Reds, blues, green and yellow” and says Yoshis come in many colors. Instead of a special power, each Yoshi has a favorite fruit. The manual adds that all Yoshis like melons.

Yoshi’s Crafted World: an open-ended list
The Yoshi’s Crafted World character page says: “There’s Yoshi, and then there are all the other Yoshis: red, pink, blue, yellow, and more.” The phrase “and more” means Nintendo is giving examples, not a complete roster.
Why there is no single answer
Yoshi colors are tied to individual games, so a list from one game does not carry over to another. Keep three points in mind when you read color claims:
- Check the game first. The colors named in Super Mario World are not the same set named in Yoshi’s Story or Yoshi’s Crafted World.
- Separate appearance from effect. A color can be named without any gameplay role attached, as on the Yoshi’s Crafted World page.
- Do not assume a shared ability. Red, blue, and yellow each have a specific effect in Super Mario World, but the official sources cited here do not establish that those effects carry over to other titles.
For a complete list in a given game, the official manual for that title is the most reliable reference.
