For Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, prioritize Mini-Turbo and Speed together: Mini-Turbo rewards drifting through turns, while Speed supports a strong pace on straights. Acceleration, Handling, Traction, and Weight can matter more depending on the course and how you drive. There is no single best stat spread for every player or track.
What the stats mean
A build combines your character with a vehicle body, tires, and glider. Those parts contribute to the final stats, so a character’s numbers alone do not tell you how a setup will perform. Nintendo’s beginner guide explains that bodies determine basic vehicle stats, tires affect speed and ease of handling, and gliders adjust acceleration and weight.

The stat explanations below follow the accessible guide from Nintendo Life; they are useful descriptions, not an official Nintendo ranking of which stat matters most.
- Speed: How fast the racer goes. It matters for sustained pace, but a high Speed value is not automatically the best choice if the build gives up too much in other areas.
- Mini-Turbo: The boost benefit associated with drifting. It is included in detailed setup comparisons, even though it is not among the most prominent stat labels highlighted in this guide. It is worth considering because boosts can contribute speed through turns.
- Acceleration: How quickly the racer reaches top speed. Consider it when recovering from interruptions and getting back up to pace.
- Handling: How sharply the vehicle turns and corners. More can be useful on technical tracks, though the right balance depends on your driving and the rest of the build.
- Traction (also described as Grip): A factor to consider for grip and relevant course surfaces. A larger displayed number should not be assumed to improve every ordinary-road situation.
- Weight: Affects whether racers knock others aside or are knocked aside. It is one factor in the setup, not a reason by itself to choose a build.
How to choose what matters most for your build
Balance Mini-Turbo against Speed
Look for enough Mini-Turbo to make drifting useful without giving away more Speed than you are willing to trade. The balance depends on the track and your driving style: a build that works well through corners should still retain enough pace for the straights.

- Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc
Use Acceleration as a recovery consideration
If getting back up to speed after an interruption is important to you, consider Acceleration alongside sustained pace. It describes how quickly the racer reaches top speed; it is not a substitute for deciding what Speed level suits your build.
Match Handling and Traction to the course
On tracks with many tight turns, Handling may help make cornering easier. Consider Traction where grip and surface conditions are relevant, rather than treating either stat as an across-the-board upgrade.
Treat Weight as one part of the trade-off
Weight affects bumping interactions with other racers. Weigh that consideration against your priorities for cornering, drift boosts, recovery, and pace instead of maximizing Weight in isolation.
Choose vehicle parts to complement one another
Nintendo’s official beginner guide describes karts as general-purpose, ATVs as stable and suited to dirt, and bikes as good at turns. Sport bikes commit to turns instead of sliding while drifting. Use those categories as starting points, then consider the course’s surfaces and corners, your preferred drift behavior, and the resulting combined stats.

The same guide says, “Gliders mainly affect a vehicle’s weight and acceleration. They have less effect on races than the above two parts.” The guide gives no numerical magnitude for the parts’ effects in that passage, so treat the roles as qualitative rather than as measured differences.

Nintendo’s update history lists version 4.0.0 as released September 1, 2026. Its notes say player speed during races increased by the equivalent of one coin. The cited notes do not say that the update changed the relative character or component stats, so the global speed change should not be mistaken for a new ranking of those stats.
Nintendo’s game page identifies Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a Nintendo Switch game with racer selection and customizable vehicles. Nintendo lists 42 characters, or 43 with Birdo for players with qualifying access to the Booster Course Pass or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. That is roster context, not a count of distinct stat profiles or evidence that one character is best.
Quick Recap
A practical comparison checklist
- Compare the complete character, body, tire, and glider combination rather than the character alone.
- Check Mini-Turbo and Speed together, and decide how much pace you are willing to trade for drift boosts.
- Consider Acceleration if recovery matters to you, and Handling if the course or your driving calls for easier cornering.
- Account for Traction when surface grip is relevant and Weight when bumping interactions matter.
- Choose parts according to course type and preferred drift behavior; no single setup is established as best for every player.
