There is no universal ranking system for werewolves. Many stories use labels such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Omega, but their meanings vary by setting. The Werewolf: The Apocalypse role-playing game has a separate Garou rank ladder—Cub, Cliath, Fostern, Adren, Athro and Elder—which should not be treated as a ranking system for werewolves in every book, show or game.
Common werewolf pack ranks in fiction
In stories that use a pack hierarchy, the labels below are common conventions rather than rules shared by all werewolf fiction. Their definitions and order can change from one setting to another.
| Label | Common use in fiction | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha | Pack leader | Often the highest-status member in stories that use this hierarchy. |
| Beta | Second-in-command or close subordinate to the Alpha | Its duties and authority depend on the story. |
| Gamma | Sometimes placed below Beta | Its position and responsibilities are inconsistent. |
| Omega | Sometimes a low-status member or outsider | Not every story uses the term this way, or uses it at all. |
Some settings and summaries also use labels such as Delta, Luna and Zeta, or terms like sentinel, hunter and scout. These may describe a job or relationship rather than a formal rank, so the label alone does not establish where a character sits in a hierarchy. The available sources do not establish a definitive historical origin for the modern Alpha/Beta-style list.
A different system: Garou ranks in a role-playing reference
In a fan-operated reference for Garou role-playing, rank is tied to Renown, challenges and recognition. Its ladder is distinct from the Alpha/Beta/Gamma/Omega convention:

| Rank | Number in the reference | Meaning in that framework |
|---|---|---|
| Cub | 0 | A young Garou before full standing. |
| Cliath | 1 | A newcomer who gains full standing after a Rite of Passage. |
| Fostern | 2 | A more seasoned Garou who has earned Renown. |
| Adren | 3 | A rank associated with major responsibilities and leadership. |
| Athro | 4 | An elite rank associated with recognized service and authority. |
| Elder | 5 | A senior rank associated with leadership and recognition; advancement is described as special, not merely a numerical threshold. |
This is one role-playing reference’s account, not a universal werewolf hierarchy or an official publisher confirmation. Renegade Game Studios describes Werewolf: The Apocalypse 5th Edition as a reimagining of the game rather than a continuation of earlier editions. The publisher’s product page identifies the fifth-edition core book, but does not establish that this older Cub-to-Elder ladder applies unchanged to that edition. For a playable, named werewolf setting, see the Werewolf: The Apocalypse 5th Edition Core Rulebook; it presents one game’s framework, not a universal answer to werewolf lore.

Start with the work and edition the character belongs to. A rank from one fictional universe may not carry over to another, even when both use familiar labels.

- Check how status is gained: A setting may base it on strength, appointment, social position, Renown, a challenge or another rule.
- Check its scope: The hierarchy may apply to one pack, a wider organization or only a character’s personal story.
These distinctions help interpret a named setting; there is no reliable ranking chart that covers every werewolf franchise.
